Hi there friends and family...

In London, UK on a beautiful, cloudy day in Southfields. Why London? To see an orthopaedic doc...Well, as I'm sure you've heard, had a bit of a mishap whilst in Malawi last week. In case you haven't heard, here's the abbreviated version: my kind, but narcoleptic pickup truck driver fell aseep at around 100 km/hr and failed to make the sharp left hander that we were approaching, we sailed down into a ditch...and when the dust settled I was alive (albiet a bruised, bloody mess). So, I have a small T12 vertebrae fracture, but all other injuries have healed ...

said come! We said we'd be there around the 10 Jan, 2007 which was very

Africa is such a beautiful, amazing place. It is definitely worth the effort to get here. We left New York on an evening flight to Frankfurt (6-7 hours), had a 10 hour layover there, and then another 10 1/2 hour flight to Johannesburg. We decided to stay there overnight in an attempt to catch up on sleep - a plan that backfired! We were able to take lovely naps in the afternoon but when night came we were completely sleepless due to the time change. It was pretty annoying not to be able to sleep when we are so tired. The next morning we flew to Livingstone, Zambia, about 2 hours away.

hotel and generally lazed about. We went to the falls a few more times,
seeing it at various stages of flood. The water was really brown now
and it was a very wet experience. In fact, one day as we made our way
past the David Livingstone statue we passed a group of Japanese
tourists, who'd clearly just arrived and hadn't seen the falls yet.
They looked in horror at our drenched bedraggled state. The guide asked
- "is it very wet?" "Yes" we cheerfully answered and the whole group
looked very worried. Wonder if they braved ...

We left Livingstone on the 27th, in our shiny new rented Landcruiser. The road was perfectly fine for the first couple of hours, until we reached Sesheke, near where Niamh and I had crossed over from Namibia. All of a sudden the road disappeared into a dusty track. Not to worry, this was why we’d hired a 4x4. Indeed the going wasn’t that bad at all for the first little while. They really need a bridge, it's a very short distance.

Our first stop was Victoria Falls National Park where we got to see one side of the falls, as it is 7 kms wide. From the Zambia side you can see about 3 kms of the fall; while the best view is said to be from ...
