I will begin by saying that Montevideo is a city of surprising contrasts. I know I have said this before about other cities (like Paraty), but it seems far more pronounced here. It is quite beautiful, metropolitan, even exotic, but still has a kind of rural feel about it. Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and 45% of the population live here. I think the guide (of the small day bus tour I went on) said there are about 1.5 million in the city itself. It is very colonial and I'm beginning to notice the colonial features of buildings and roughly tell how old they are by their appearance.

And I still don´t think I can. It is peaceful and calm but sort of crazy at the same time. It is surrounded by the brown waters of the Rio de la Plata, just like Colonia was, and the population is more than a million, which is about a third of the entire country´s population. We have walked what seems like a hundred miles, and I am nowhere near tired of just looking around. I love it here. I don´t really know if it would be for everyone, but it´s ...

From the airport we went directly to the docks and caught a fast boat out of Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. After about an hour on the boat, we arrived in the cutest and most laid back town that we have (so far) been to on this trip. Here is what our Lonely Planet guide book says about Uruguay in the introductory paragraph:

Some people think "real" backpacking is all about varying degrees of ...

At the ferry terminal we checked in and then went through immigration - Argentina and Uruguay were sitting next to each other, so it was very quick and painless. We boarded the ferry which is large and has duty free etc on board. I read and Scott slept for the 3 hour journey to Montevideo. We disembarked and caught a taxi from the port to our hostel. At the hostel our booking was all confirmed and we checked in and ...

After spending 3 weeks in Patagonia, I was in much need of some sun. From Buenos Aires I took the express ferry across the Rio Plata to Colonia before jumping on a 5 hour bus to the world famous beach resort town of Punta del Este.

This beach haven is set on a peninsula with the Rio on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Many wealthy Argentinians come here for a quick vacation away from the hectic streets of Buenos Aires.
I´m back in BA now after a 17 hour bus ride from Iguazu...but more on that later. I realise I am a few days behind in my blog so I am taking advantage of the early morning calm at the hostel to try and catch up! BTW, if you ever come to BA you must stay at Hostel Estoril, it feels like home here with really helpful staff and its right in the centre of the city.

Back to the past....Wed 31 May...

Only got about 3 hours sleep before getting up to grab some breakfast and packing for my trip to Iguazu, straight from Colonia. The plan was to spend the day in Colonia, get the 4pm ferry ...

After leaving La Paloma we thought we'd be in Punta del Este in no time and catch some of the great sunshine. We got there in good time but getting there involved catching 3 different buses. Our Spanish for buying bus tickets is slowing improving hehe and we're quite happy that we know the transportation system of Uruguay like the back of our hands now.

Described as the Monte Carlo of Uruguay, on approaching Punta del Este you can see that there's money in this place. Alot of nice apartments, hotels and beachfront properties. This place is absolutely kicking in January and February when ...

Arising around 7.30am, which we haven't done in about 3-4 weeks :o) we got ready and headed to the port in Buenos Aires. BuqueBus is the company which operates the boats and buses to Uruguay from Argentina. We decided to get the fast boat which takes 1 hour rather than the slow 3 hours. It's a little more pricer but we thought it would be nice to have the additional time in Colonia. Uruguay is 1 hour ahead of Argentina. On completing the journey across the murky brown waters of the River Plate I was happy with our decision for the shorter journey. There's really nothing to see en route.

Emilia was treating us to a night in a nice hotel for owens services..So after not finding any cabs we managed to get one to The Sheraton...sadly some idiot name Bush decided to visit and bring ...

That makes me so disappointed but excited for what is to come.

This past weekend, it was Amanda’s birthday, my roommate and a group of us went to Punta del Este, Uruguay! It was so fantastic and one of the best and ritziest beaches in South America, and that was no lie. We had such a great time on the boat from Buenos Aires to Colonia, Uruguay. Then we took a boat to ...

After a few days in the madness of Buenos Aires, we decided that we'd like to ease into South American culture somewhere a little calmer, preferably with beaches.
Having escaped from the mosquitos in Colonia, we arrived in Montevideo. We had heard many contrasting opinions about Montevideo and so didn´t really know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by what we found....

The city itself is a mixture (as with a lot of the South American cities) of old and new, rundown and revitalized.
We decided we should see Uruguay as we were so close, and we were very pleased we did....

Getting here was easy enough, just 50 minutes on a ferry from BsAs. Colonia is a small tourist town, typical of many towns in South America in that it has an old town, full of cobbled streets and boutique shops, B&Bs and hotels.

We checked out the old town and it was very pretty. Climbed to the top of the lighthouse for the views - you can see BsAs on a clear day. However, it wasn´t long before the mosquitos attacked and sent us to seek cover and DEET. Within a few minutes of standing ...

We woke up early to take the morning boat over to Colonia from Buenos Aires, it only took us 1 hour to get there and it was a fun day. We rented a golf cart and we drove around and checked out all the old colonial streets, shops, restaraunts. Took lots of pictures and walked and walked some more. The food was really good and the ice cream incredible. MMMM At the end of the day there was only one thing to do.. relax some more and take a coffee on the cobblestone streets of Colonia.

I think Colonía and Día del Campo are helping me realize that maybe I'm not a city girl. I never really thought that I was but Colonía confirms it.

We got up early to meet at the port so we could take the Buquebus across the river to Colonía which is in Uruguay. We got to Colonía around noon and had the day at our leisure. It was fantastic.

We took our time eating lunch and spotted an old time photo place across the street. A few of us decided to go ahead and get one taken. We picked a day at the beach theme and it turned out pretty cute if I do say so myself.

After that ...

Yesterday, my parents, grandparents and I decided to spend the day in Uruguay. After waking up at the crack of dawn we made our way to Puerto Madero to catch a high speed ferry called a Buquebus. The boat ride took about 3 hours and landed us right in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Since we had no plan and no idea what Montevideo had to offer we decided to take a tour of the city in a big tour bus. Our very enthusiastic tour guide took us around the city to see the various buildings, statues, theaters, plazas, beaches and monuments. The tour was a great idea as we got to see all of ...

Tuesday March 22, 2005Buenos Aires, Argentina to Colonia, UruguayWe boarded the ferry for Colonia Uruguay at 9a.m and arrived 3 hours later plus a one hour time difference. The Hotel Beltran was a few minutes from the port. It was quite a challenge to lug our things up a slight incline. Ok, I will be the first to admit how badly out of shape I am. It didn’t help that my luggage was getting heavier. Using an expression coined by Mathias, Jan put it best that Brenda and I behaved like“shopping monsters”.

Our lovely day in Colonia consisted of a walk through its beautiful streets. ...

It was a sunny nice ...

Beautiful, colonial town on the Uruguayan coast. Had a lot of character
and the boat ride there was fun and comfortable (it was like a floating
hotel). But do not plan to spend many hours in Colonia, for there is
not much to do other than take pictures and eat. Definitely worth
seeing if you have the chance, but try to couple it with another stop.
