Our first day in Edinburgh, we got quite alot accomplished. For lunch, we ordered sandwiches from an upscale eatery called "Subway". I wish we had places like that in the States, real scottish submarine sandwiches made fresh while you wait. We took our fancy meal and ate in the Princes Steet Gardens, a huge part in the center of Edinburgh. While we devoured our lunches, we we entertained by an older man playing the accordian. After we finished, we gave our performer some money, got some ice cream for dessert, and began our hike up to Edinburgh Castle. It was a tough one at times, but the view ...

Today we navigated our way through London’s underground to visit the British Museum. It boasts an impressive collection of historical artifacts dating all
the way back to about 6000 BC. One day
in this museum is not nearly enough time to study all that it contains, but I
tried my best to take it all in. There
was a large collection of ancient Greek statues which, interestingly enough,
were replicas that the Romans had created from the original works. There also
was a large collection of pieces of ancient Greek and Roman architecture to
enjoy.

The museum
also contained a massive ...

Today, in my opinion,
was one of the most educational days of the trip so far. We visited the Glaxo Smith

manufacturing sites.

Our day started out quite early and after we became experts on the British rail
and tube system we arrived at our destination. Ware was a lot quieter than
London and not really the setting you would expect to find a manufacturing
facility that is making pharmaceuticals for over 130 countries and employing
about 1800 people.
The facility itself ...

Everyone slept in a little longer this morning since we did
not have to leave the hotel until 9 am
for King’s College. The pharmacy school was much closer than our previous
scheduled activities and we only had to take a short train ride to reach our
destination. We found out that London
still has a rush hour at 9 am!
The train we needed to take was so full that five students could not squeeze
in. Then only two of the remaining five students could fit on the next overcrowded
train. Even though our morning transit was hectic, we managed to regroup
without losing anyone and made it to ...

Today was yet another fast-paced, activity-packed day in London. The day was beautiful, partly cloudy with
temps in the upper 50’s. Leaving our

morning, we then traveled another two hours on the Tube and the train to arrive
in Huntingdon, where Huntingdon Animal Life Sciences is located. After arriving in Huntingdon we were met with
several very official-looking employees of Huntingdon who drove us to the
facility. For many of us, this was our
first time riding inside a European car, and it was very interesting! Some of
us (ahem) tried to hop into the drivers’ side, ...

blustery South Dakota
day. Although the wind was cold, the rain stayed away.

Despite the mediocre weather, much of the group decided to
take a trip to the English countryside to see Stonehenge,
Bath and
Avebury. The group traveled via train to ...

Stopping at a couple of beaches along the way the view back across to Edinburgh was stupendous. ...

Although not a lot to do and not much history (since it was all burned down by the pirates), we ...

Ever since my brother and I visited Bolton Abbey last week I’ve been raving about it to my parents. Finally they’ve decided they want to see it before we leave. I’m delighted as I really enjoyed it last time and think mum in particular will enjoy the easy lower walk beside the river.

We arrive, after a few false turns, at the vast car park cum picnic area down by the river. It isn’t quite as busy today so we find a nice spot and start setting out the picnic. Then Dad decides to go in search of a loo – taking the car with him. It was probably half an hour before he finally returned – he ...

Here are some pictures of me Dad and Val visiting Helen and Stewart in Blairgowrie when Dad was here in December. It was so cold when we went up there (it's about an hours drive from Edinburgh but oh so much colder) the entire landscape was white - it wasn't snow it was actually frozen. All the trees and fences and fields were covered in ice....and the river was also frozen!!! Reminded me of the land of Narnia from the lion the witch and the wardrobe...everything is white when they go through the back of the cuboard!!

After I went skiing in France I jumped on a bus and went to visit my ...

I woke up in the morning energized and full of energy to hike up the 800+/- steps to see the views over London from St Pauls. The church is magnificent and the amazing views were well worth it. After St Pauls I was off to find the train to Windsor.

As you arrive in Windsor you have some amazing views of the castle and town. You also realize just how big it all is as well. Stepping of the train you walk through a few shops and almost run straight into the huge Windsor Castle. The day was dreary and rainy and the Queen was at Windsor Castle so the royal apartments were closed to the ...

Erin's Grandfather Doug came to visit too, and we were very fortunate that our timing matched that of the famous international (Scotland AND England) Arysaig Run. Our next stroke of luck was that our good friends Kate, Eleanor, and Branislav had a 1950 MG TD free as well as a need for a navigator for Kate's 1925 OM.

We arrived bright and early in Edinburgh, to Jean's dismay as we had to wake her up when we arrived to the New Town.
Tuesday, 12/25/2007

We’ve arrived! (London Heathrow airport, 1 pm, GMT)

We met our good friend, Davin, and our soon-to-be good friend, Trent, at the London Heathrow airport. From the airport, we took a bus to Paddington Station, which was a short walk from our Days Inn hotel. Upon check-in, we discovered that our hotel room was so tiny. Good thing that most of our time in London was spend exploring the city because we probably would've gone crazy being packed in like sardines!

We decided the best way to prevent jet lag (and minimize time stuffed in our hotel/closet) was to ...

This is a frequently lauded upscale eatery not far from South Kensington on Elystan Street. We took our well behaved 10-year-old along and the chef graciously accommodated her by assembling a broccoli rissoto. The menu is a fixed price experience; one side is a soup-to-nuts marathon, while the other is a bit lighter. The lesser fixed price a la carte menu was about $135 per person. Remember, this is London.

The formal staff moved about the rather intimate room like the cast in a well choreographed stage show. A lot of flair. We began with three spoons, each containing a yummy concoction. ...

The sun was shining in Scarborough and as we decended the valley into Whitby the sun became blocked out by heavy fog. It was 4pm and it was dark and freezing. We couldnt see anything - it was very eerie. Meagan, knowing the tale of how Dracula was thought up here, was petrified and didnt want to go outside. To make matters worse we were approached by some very shifty looking locals in a very dark and isolated alley. We then went to look for the hostel and had to walk through a dark and misty graveyard to find it (which we never did). We finally settled on a B & B and carefully searched for ...

As it’s still quite early I decide to head back into York for a few hours. The weather has really brightened up and the sun is putting in its first appearance for a few days. When I arrive, the first thing I do is go down to the river to see how all the rain in the last few days has affected the Ouse. The answer is badly. It’s immediately apparent that it’s a hell of a lot higher than yesterday. As I follow it along into the centre of town, I’m greeted by the sight of flood barriers and the kind of thing you see on news coverage.

One particular stretch of road that sits low alongside the ...

Things are picking up again today. The weather forecast says the worst of the weather has gone and the risk of serious flooding is subsiding. They are also promising the best day of the week, so I’d better make the most of it.

I head off today with my brother to visit the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) gardens as Harlow Carr. I offer to pay the admission when we get there, but sadly the gardens have also suffered from the recent heavy rain. Parts of the garden are currently fenced off, so they’ve halved the ticket price. We soon realise that flooding rivers were not to blame; most of ...
