Finally! We're here, somewhat rested, and ready to tackle Tokyo Disneyland! Our hotel is technically within walking distance, but since we have young children, we'll save the whining for later(not first thing in the morning) and we hop on the free shuttle bus. It's a great-looking bus; no mistaking that we're at Disney! The monorail station is pretty much across the street, but the bus was so cute that we had to ride it instead of walking.

Unlike Anaheim (and Florida), there is a fee for this monorail. It was a couple dollars per person, and it had four stops: Hotel side; Disney ...

Of course I had sushi and sashimi using chopsticks and even got to go to a few traditional restaurants where you sit on the floor. The first couple of days we visited Meiji Jingu Shrine which was amazing because it was not only beautiful but also such a peaceful place put in the middle of a city. After the shrine we got to see Sumo wrestling. It was all I expected and more! Yes they wear the diapers and kick up their legs and stomp their feet. ...

Been to New York City? Los Angeles? I hope so, because using them is the only way in which I can properly describe my first impression of Tokyo. Picture the height and density of NYC. Remember the subways, crowds, and backalleys? Well, Tokyo can be much like that...but with the breadth of LA. We traveled throughout Japan on their world-famous Shinkasen (or “bullet”) trains that are remarkably punctual, clean, convenient, and comfortable. The ...

We checked the
weather forecast, and decided that the first of our two full days in Tokyo would
be our around-town day, and then the second day, which looked much nicer
weather-wise would be our Disney Sea day. There's a big new building under
construction just next to our hotel, and Max just loved to watch the two cranes
at work, lifting stuff way up top. We would just turn one of the chairs facing
the window, and he would sit there transfixed while we got ready in the
morning. Almost as good as Treehouse!

The plan for our day

afternoon in Tokyo, we wandered around Shinjuku, slightly dazed from the
overnight flight, but not doing too badly overall. Shinjuku is a very
business-y neighborhood, also with lots of shopping to be had. The Tokyo city
hall as well as several head offices (NTT DoCoMo is one) are all in this
neighborhood, so there's always plenty of black suits about. We didn't know too
much about the area before coming to Tokyo, but we are happy to find that it is
a very convenient spot to be based out of, since Shinjuku station is a major hub
for both the JR lines (like an ...

Over there was like everyone was trendy and fashionable. We went shopping asap to get some better clothes to fit it.

Anywho. Fashion. So for the girls the style according to the magazines was making your summer clothes 'winterable'. So there were a lot of skirts and shorts with boots and funky socks. All in different kinds and colors. The puffy vests with the furry hoods. Scarves scarves scarves and knit hats. And phone ...

We are finally beginning to get the hang of Japan! The train systems are truly amazing! People line up off to the side of the train doors and actually let passengers get off the train before attempting to get on. And Japan's garbage process is unbelievable! You can't find trash cans ANYWHERE, yet the streets and trains are immaculate. People take their trash with them and dispose of it at home. If we're lucky, we may find trash cans at a 7-11, but they have different slots for combustible & non-combustible trash...which we can't read, so we just resort to taking our trash with us back to ...

Hello again from Tokyo.

We are actually writing this from Kyoto but we had a couple fun nights in Tokyo this week. We shot fireworks off in the park, saw another shrine, went to the Tokyo National Art Museum, saw a pretty sweet outdoor market and we had an amazing dinner on a riverboat. It was great to hang out in Tokyo with Tyler and his friends. Darren, Cathrine, Julie were with us on the river boat for dinner. It was a great way to spend our last evening of the week in Tokyo. We took a lot of pictures and I put a few up here so I will let them do the talking check them out.

It took us most of the day to get to Tokyo, but it was worth it! We eventually made it to Asakusa station, and found our hostel, which was nice! We checked in, and headed our for some dinner in a little don-katsu place. We had a little bit of a wander round what was once Tokyo's entertainment capital; it's a bit different now. The remaining cinemas don't exactly show the usual films, they're a bit more adult only. There are also loads of games halls, with gambling machines disguised as arcade games, that kind of thing.

We got back to the hostel, and while Mike went on the net, I got ...

What a long day that was. Our travels to Japan started at 4:45am in Dodgeville. We got a ride into Madison and said our goodbyes to the Thuli family. The Van Galder bus too Madison was a three hour trip of listening to a German woman sitting behind us speaking very loudly the whole time. After the bus we successfully navigated our way through security at O'hare. We hungout for three hours and left at 1pm Chicago time. The plane was a 777 not a 747 and it was pretty neat; movies, music, really really awful food. The flight took around thirteen hours. We arrived in Tokyo and it was 4pm ...

From the moment we arrived we experienced unbelievably fabulous service. The staff somehow knew who we were when we arrived, greeted us by name, showed us to our beautiful room and checked us in right there. The next morning as we were leavingat 5:30 to go to the fish market, the doorman drew us a map of the fish market, asked us whether we would like to have a sushi breakfast there, and described the (tiny) place we should go.

I met Nick at the airport in Tokyo as his flight got in about an hour before mine. It had been about 7 weeks since I'd seen him, but it turns out I still recognized him. Whew!

Altogether, I'll have about a week in Tokyo, but only 3 days at the beginning of the trip. We spent two nights at a lovely ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn) in Asakusa. I finally decided to take a break from hostels and get a real room since the ryokan are supposed to be a travel experience all on their own. I know many of you at work have been traumatized by my hostel-staying and are cheering this decision. The ...

It was an amazing trip to Tokyo which was really different from the confines of Toronto. When I first arrived, it was about a 1.5hr trip to the Shibuya which was where I thought I was staying at the time. I think they gave me the wrong subway stn, where I found out that there was an express that they didn't tell me about when I asked them how to get to Shibuya! I found a tourist booth along the train system and finally was able to look for a hostel. I decided I might as well live the experience of a capsule hotel (which is pretty much a hotel coffin). It was quite an experience as they gave ...

We arrived after 22 hours of travel, and quickly found our way about the japanese subway system. Following this, we got into our guesthouse, and tried to master the art of the japanese toilet- ie heated seats, flowing water, and attached sink. hee hee hee Jenny had a fun time at this task. Our first day we mastered the Japanese subway system, and walked through the various temples, shrines and gardens. We went to the imperial palace, followed by a trip to the shoppong district of Ginza (Prada, gucci, chanel. and us drenched in rain waling about in ponchos=- ha ha we always seemed to look ...

Finishing up at school was hectic. Lots of family, lots of parties, lots of packing, lots of nerves, lots of emotions. It's hard to say bye to the people you've lived down the hall from knowing that actually seeing them again is going to take a hell of a lot more follow-through than a quick call or knock. It was a rollercoaster ride that didn't come with full nights of sleep, and so I got onto the plane coasting on about four hours a night for a week. I'm not usually good at that, but the upside was that I crashed hard on the plane.

I was en route to my family in Korea, but had a ...

I use both of these landmarks to tell people where I live but the truth is, I don't exactly know where I am. I feel like this is an integral part of living abroad (life, really)--knowing one's whereabouts--but I couldn't really tell you that yet. I'm hoping that after three months, I will know this information, but I can't be sure. You see, Japan is split up into various sub-sections. Getting to Ichigaya station from Tokyo station at rush hour with huge backpacks on our backs was slightly interesting (Nick nearly knocked a couple of small children onto the train tracks a couple of times!) but we survived the journey and were pleased to meet Will at around 7pm. We ...

For my parents' last weekend in Japan we headed to Tokyo! We visited my favourite veg restaurant in Tokyo (Brown Rice Cafe) and Tower Records before heading to Hamarikyu Gardens where we participated in a tea ceremony and got a few more snaps of some cherry blossoms and zen gardens.

We intended to take the ferry to Asakusa (as I did my first weekend in Tokyo with Ayami and Junko) but missed the last one.
