They explored in and around Hobart, then vacationed with us to New South Wales, which included visits to Sydney, the Hunter Valley Wine Region, and the Blue Mountains.

We invited Carol to write the blog which she graciously accepted as follows:

After a long trip across the pond, a delay in Fiji resulting in a missed connection in Sydney, and some new, unplanned-for connections, we arrived in Hobart on Jan 16 to the excited greetings of Avani & Sean at the airport, and the "Angel of Mercy" Indira, greeting ...

Sydney was a very vibrant city. Then I left, and it wasn't anymore.

We arrived in Sydney with only 48 hours to see the town. We got to our hotel around 9am, dropped off our luggage & made our way over to the Opera House. In fact, the rain probably kept the crowds down a bit!

Day one

Visited the Opera House (we didn't go in, but I did touch the roof). Hey, every tourist has to go see it, right?

Had a brekkie sandwhich at McDonalds. This was an interesting breakfast option. It was a hoagie roll with egg, sausage, and ketchup.

Walked across the Harbour ...

Ok, so we eventually arrived in Sydney after the aforementioned mammoth flight. We were actually pretty chipper when we got here, that is, until we saw the weather. It was bucketing down and we didn't have a stich of waterproof clothing between us, having given it away in Peru on the mistaken understanding that it was sunny down under. A fact I gleaned from repeated viewings of Home and Away. Anyhow "no worries", as they say here, we had a free pickup and were transported to our hostel without a drop hitting us.

We dumped our stuff and headed straight out to the shops, I was on a ...

I got to sydney on 17th Sept at 9am and after eventually getting through interrogation at quarantine which is kind of like a supermarket checkout and getting my visa sorted I jumped on the 40 bus to Bondi Junction and stayed just off Coogee Beach for the first night and pretty much slept through, the 30 odd hour flight was a bit of an ordeal!

Second day I travelled about an hour out of Sydney to stay with some friends of the family on ...

So I'm a 26 yr 'old' from Sydney, Australia and this is my blog for the trip I've been thinking about ever since I first heard the fantastic travel stories of my parents as an impressionable 8 yr old.

I remember sitting there as a wide-eyed youngster listening to how my father had travelled the globe, going from what sounded like adventure to adventure. Stories about; waking up surrounded by turkish troops on Cyprus, wedding dresses in Bucharest, living on a kibutz in Israel are all fertile ground for a young imagination.

Eventually my father found a less nomadic form of adventure ...

Once upon a time in a land far far away there lived a girl called Amie. Now Amie is a simple girl, and as long as the alcohol was plentyful and the company stimulating she was happy. For this very reason Amie settled in a little place called Manly. Here the sun shines (most of the time), the land is green and lush and the beaches beautiful. The people are from all over and provided her with many a good time and hangover!

Most of these times where centered round a big red castle called manly backpackers. The king of this castle is an Aussie called Pete. This man was Amie's hero as he ...

Food was good, but for the price and from looking at the website I expected better. Some wasn't very hot and the choice didn't seem as extensive as it did on the website. However, everything I tasted (and I tasted almost everything) was still very yummy and I would go back again.

One word of advice, don't pay the $35 for the photo, its bad quality and you can just download it from free from the website the next day like we did.

Pancakes on the rocks serves loads of different types of pancakes - about 15 sweet and 10 savoury, all of which sound and taste delicious. Very indulgent. I went for the Mexican savoury pancake which was really tasty, not too spicy. Not a very big portion however, but it was lunchtime. Unfortunately we didn't get to stay around for dessert because the service was so appaling, there seemed to be more than enough staff for the amount of customers, doing little, except looking busy doing nothing!!

Good bar food. My burger was a bit overcooked, but I've found that in a lot of aussie bars. The toppings made up for it though. The lamb with mash was apparently delicious. Service wasn't great, but then it is a bar! Also was very crowded for a wednesday night.

We returned to Sydney with high hopes and expectations, looking forward to a few days catching up with friends and a few days buying a campervan but little did we know the effort it would take to find the right van! We decided we were willing to pay a bit more for a decent, reliable van but soon realised this was not how it worked. Basically the sooner the backpacker is leaving the country, the cheaper the van is, regardless of condition. Anyway, we settled on a 1984 pop-top Nissan Urvan, a little rusty but she drives really well and comes complete with fridge, sink, cooker and two ‘sofas’ ...

You know when you've run out of thoughts and ideas and you just need to talk to someone else to freshen up your perspective. This is what Sydney has been for me! Upon arrival, James was waiting for me by baggage claim, drives me to his house and his wife is waiting with a cold beer and a towel asking me if I wanted a hot shower! But of Course!

Feeling new, refreshed and ready to go, off to a VERY nice Thai dinner after a spectacular ferry ride across the harbor. It turns out James and Tiffany live in McMann's Point which is across the harbor from the Opera House. So I get a full on ...

My flight out of the amazing SIngapore airport was late in the afternoon. I was to arrive into Sydney around 8 pm. I actually arrived at the airport in Singapore a bit early to see what all the fuss was about. This airport has been ranked in the top 5 airports of the world for several years now. I can definately see why. There is free internet, a movie theater, a hotel, several restaurant options, shopping galore, and plenty of areas to walk around or just rest. I even sat in a recliner with speakers in the armrests watching CNN. It was great!

After enjoying myself at the Chiangi ...

Getting there is half the fun!

Laura, Linda and I climbed out of bed early on Friday. We had reserved a spot to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The bridge climb started out with a lengthy preparation session that included a bridge climb video and putting on our bridge suits and harnesses.

After about an hour, we were ready to go. We started by walking along the underside of the bridge out to the first pylon. Next a steep ascent led us to the top side of the bridge and the view became alot more interesting. After a few flights of ladders, we were on top of the upper truss that ...

The Lord Nelson is the oldest still operating brew pub in Australia. The beer and atmosphere are great and having a room just upstairs was a lot of fun! The reaction of most Sydney siders when we told them where we were staying was "I didn't know they had rooms there!". The Lord Nelson is in the touristy "The Rocks" and close to all of the cute little shops. There is not quite the selection of restaurants here as near the Pentura - but how can you beat just going down stairs to the pub! The rooms were a little more expensive (if you wanted your own bathroom - about $189 AUD, less if you are ...

While the Pentura was not in the center of the "hot" tourist area (the Rocks, Circular Quay etc.) the location was still quite good. It is located about a block away from the south end of Hyde park and walking distance from all the tourist sites (for those not afraid of a bit of a walk). If walking isn't your thing, it is also situated within a block of both the city rail and the monorail to get you anywhere you might want to go with little effort. When the price was added in ($139 AUD a night), this hotel was ideal! The only drawback might be the room size. It was small, and storage space for ...

When we first arrived, we wandered the city near our hotel for a few hours waiting to be able to check in. It was Sunday and early, so only a few Sydney siders had made it out. The morning was bright and beautiful so walking, as tired as we were, was pleasant. After leaving the park, we headed over to do some shopping for items we hadn't packed. It was fun to window shop (not much was open yet). It took a while for me to figure out why something wasn't quite right about the clothing I saw in the windows. Later that day it hit me – they were all fall and winter clothing! It is still hard to ...

No seriously thats what the papers said! Sorry Sydney we seem to have brought the bad weather with us. Nevertheless I was very excited to be here and we had a great time.

Arrived from Singapore in the rain. We stayed at Evas Hostel in Kings Cross. Pretty basic but fine for what we wanted and it had great views over the city from the roof terrace. As soon as we had walked through the door there was a phone call for me at the reception (what timing!). It was my Uncle Alan who flew own to see us for the weekend.

That evening we went to a nice fish restaurant called More Fish. It was a ...

Well Friends,

I finally made it here, after 30 hours of travelling, with 3 different planes, a long distance bus, and some shuttles. When my niece and I got to Sydney, it was almost like it wasn't real for awhile... like we might just be in Chicago or some other big city. But then we saw the Sydney Opera house, and when you see that, you know you are in Australia! We stayed in a part of Sydney called the Rocks, and it is the very first place that Europeans started living when they came to Australia. There were lots of old houses and buildings that have been around for a few hundred ...

The first time we got to Manly we did what was supposed to be a 3 hour, 9km walk, on the Manly Scenic Walkway, Nath had only just got his new camera and there was loads to shoot, so we only managed 7km in 6 hours! Beautiful scenary. The massive orb spiders are worth the trip alone. They make huge webs and from a distance it looks like they're just floating in the air. There's a trail of death caught up in a thin spiral in the web, and the spider just leaves it there. Messy little git. I'm not sure if they're poisonous but we got pretty dam close to them for photos!

The second time was ...

It rained (hard!) for 5 straight days. During those days I did eat some excellent food and toured around some nice museums, but mostly I just read and relaxed. In 5 days I read 4 books. Sydney actually reminds me a lot of DC (well DC w/ a great harbor and great beach) and if the weather were like this at home I certainly wouldn't be motivated to be out walking around.

Finally after 5 days of being relaxed, but a little bored, I woke up to day 6 of partial sunshine and even a little blue sky. Unfortunately I also woke up with a sore throat and runny nose. Go figure. Luckily, I ...
