Although the area boasts the ten highest mountains in Switzerland (all over 4000m) it is the Matterhorn itself, standing 4478m high, that has become the symbol of all things Swiss (most noticeably on the cover of every Toblerone chocolate in the world!) and which Theresia felt was an unmissable attraction. Eurostar whizzed us to Paris in no time and after a quick adventure on the Metro we popped up at Gare de Lyon for the onward journey to Geneva. Whilst Gare de Lyon plays an important communication role it certainly doesn't excel as a place to stay and linger for a while. Harder to find net cafes in Alps than Spain!</p><p>Well Jim and I landed in Geneva on Sunday morning and went to buy our return train tickets in Champex where the walk starts/finishes. It's a bit confusing with the Swiss Francs here as they are so close in value to the Aussie Dollar (ie CHF1=$AUD0.94) that you expect everything to be cheap. So when our return train rides cost us CHF114 EACH we were a little shocked. I had to try to get my money's worth out of that night. Anyway, then we walked back to town and caught a boat to Lausanne.</p><p>Lausanne is a very very nice town. They had an Olympic Museum there, apparently it's the home of the IOC. Anyway the Olympic Museum was unbelievable. As you walk up the garden to get to the site they have metal arcs in the lawn. That we knew full well.</p><p>We got up early, having slept well and made an early dash for the l'Aubier, the eco-friendly farm that we stayed at during the week. The organic bits and pieces there were too tempting to overlook for gifts and trinkets.</p><p>Unfortunately, l'Aubier is in Montezillion, well outside of Neuchâtel and I had to drive. I knew, positively knew, that this would not end well for us.</p><p>We started by stopping just outside of town at a recommended Chocolate maker. I don’t know why but I had a hard time sleeping and staying awake along the train ride. It was weird and really uncomfortable. I had to switch trains at Bale/Basel station. I had an hour layover so I wandered around. I went to a sports store just to look around. Their escalators were so sophisticated! That was exactly what A and I needed, and exactly what we got in Bern. We stayed with his cousins' family right outside the town of Bern, a beautifully preserved town on a peninsula formed by the glacial waters of the Aare river. The town dates from 1191 and they have a bear pit to commemorate the naming of the town (bern - bears) -- after the first animals shot while the founder was still setting up shop there.</p><p>Our hosts couldn't have been more friendly, and Switzerland couldn't have been more naturally beautiful.
