Just another short six hour bus trip!!

Starts out nice and early and we have the usual chaos at the bus station, no one knows where the bus is, we all know where it isn't, it isn't at bay 23 where it should be. Turns out to be waiting, inexplicably in the street away from central KL bus station.

We're all herded together and up the ramp and across the street with baggage, 3 piece suites, chickens etc to our bus. Actually it's pretty comfy and the trip passes really quickly. It's remarkable that at home an hour and 20 mins to London seems interminable but now 6 hour trips seem to ...

Last time we were in Singapore was on a stop over on our honeymoon before we headed on to Australia. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and had a thoroughly decadant time. This time was a little different...

We stayed at the New 7th Storey Hotel which was a basic but clean and friendly guesthouse/hostel in a good spot, from which we could walk round the city quite easily. We caught up with Adam and Helen, who we had met in Fiji at the Bayside Resort, and spent the first day visiting Chinatown with them, having lunch (Vietnamese, yum) and dipping into deliciously air-conditioned shopping ...

Part one of our year-long journey brings us to Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan and Mongolia. We will be travelling through this wonderfully exotic part of the world until 15 June 2007, and at that time you will have to tune in to see where our journey takes us next.

We're planning on visiting the following places, hopefully in this order:-- Singapore-- Borneo and ...

We have arrived in Singapore. We are staying in a place called the Prince of Wales pub (sounds like a pub you would get in Magaluf). The place we are staying is in the Little India area.

The city is much more interesting than we were expected. There is lots to see and do, and transport around the city is easy. We are eating in big 'food centres' where there are lots of hawker stands. We have had naan breads, masala ...

After an overnight flight from Brisbane and a stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Koren and I spent most of our first day in Singapore catching up on sleep. The next day, we got up bright and early to pack all the sights into one very long day. We started out in Chinatown, which was brightly decorated and in full Chinese New Year celebration. Because we went early, we managed to catch a packed street market on the inner alleys of Chinatown. The market was wall-to-wall people and sold everything from fabrics and New Year decorations, to nuts and dried fruits (dried lotus root was especially good). In ...

This journal entry brought to you by Micky

Singapore always comes as a real shock to the system after one has been traveling around Southeast Asia for a while and has become accustomed to the dirt, stray cats, j-walking, motorbikes belching fumes into the air and eating on the street. How to describe Singapore? Clean? Yes. Classy? Not exactly. Sterile? Yes. Contrived? Definitely.

Anything else to add? Well, for a start, you definitely know you're walking around a police state when you can't buy chewing gum, although I hear they've recently legalised table-top dancing. It's funny ...

I spent the same amount of money as the Penang, although the room was a single, not a double which was just fine by me.

I was located on the 3rd and top floor at the end, so it was very quiet (except for the calls to prayer at 5:50am!). The room had an attached bathroom (toilet/sink/shower combo), aircon and a small TV. Not much room to move around, but enough to make it work.

The staff was pleasant enough, ...

Well, it was my own fault for not getting accommodation sooner, but I didn't think that finding a room on a Tuesday night would be so hard just three days out.
Sunday. Slept in. Enjoyed the beautiful morning.

The Early's and the Kuhta's ate lunch at a hawker center and made a trip to the Singapore American Schools for the Early's last minute preparations before their first day of school tomorrow. Alice teaches 4th grade and Steve is a high school biology and chemistry teacher.

After a tour of the school we took a trip to the north side of the Island to the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. This reserve with a board walk trail through mangrove forest that borders land and sea was entertaining for us all. Fish that spit water at bugs to ...

You can figure out the MRT (Singapore's train system), get to your hotel through a THRONG of people celebrating thier indpendence day (yes good timing on our part), and walk a little bit around some of the city.

So what was the impressions of Singapore on this whirlwind tour? First, we went to Orchard Road. A bastion of western decadance, commercialism, and outright moderninity. Walking down the road we saw.. Borders (US), Starbucks (US), Timberland (US), McDonalds (US), Burger King (UK.. right harry!), ...

I met May and Kace there - the "owners" of the club - and the only people in the Milonga.

Since there was another milonga on the same day the complete Singapore Tango had decided to go to the ...

We had no idea if we were on the right bus or not and were so happy to finally see the airport sign. We arrived in Singapore late afternoon and found our guesthouse without much trouble (after only 2 days in Korea, it's great to be in a English-speaking country again). We dropped off our bags and headed out to Orchard Road, Singapore's most popular shopping street. Too bad we're on a ...

The parkway has a couple of miles of paved paths along sandy beach front that are very heavily used on the weekends. Sometimes, in Singapore, you forget that you are on an island but the Parkway is a great reminder that this is an Island!

The kids rented roller blades and had a great time. At dusk, we walked an hour north along the beach to reach a great chinese restaurant where we ate outdoors on a perfectly warm evening night. The kids were famished by the time that we ...

Singapore is a country that completely exceeded every expectation that I had! It is a young country of 41 years filled with people of diverse cultures (specifically Indian, Chinese, and Malaysian). We stayed with our friend Marc who was an exceptional host!
More like an in between hotel/hostel, the place was recommended to me by a friend who departed on her travels a few months before me and I have to say its fab. Great location, friendly staff who are only too happy to help with travel plans etc, clean and bright rooms with en-suite, free internet etc. With lots of other like minded people travelling alone and indeed in groups its easy to get chatting to people.

Arrived in Singapore not really having a clue what to expect. Its a real mix of Chinese and Indian cultures. A really vibrant, colorful city.

Singapore is made up of lots of different regions, all of which a quite different from each other. We stayed in Kampung Glam (the Arab quarter) which is quite a small area with lots of little shops and cafes that are open 24 hours. The cafes sill out onto the streets and fill up with locals on an evening.

There are lots of impressive temples and mosques around the city. Amazing to look at. As you walk by them there is often the smell of ...

Also just warning you that we arent used to these euro keyboards yet so apologies for weirdness.

Singapore was great. After our last blog we decided to go to Sentosa island instead of the Zoo and gardens. We would have liked to see more attractions but unfortunately there just wasnt time. As it turned out Sentosa isalnd was a great choice as it had snippets of everything.

Firstly, getting there was a breeze on the clean and comfortable MRT. The train stations in Singapore are really like long corridors with many doors. ...

This restaurant is popular with the locals and is not very well known. It is unfortunately nestled amongst other seafood restaurants that don't look quite as sanitary. The restaurant specialises in crab and you can enjoy Singapore's two signature dishes, chilli crab and black pepper crab here. We had the chilli crab and it was amazing, full of chilli flavour and nice and spicy, just the way we like it. This isn't a dish for the faint hearted. We never got around to trying the black pepper crab however if it was even half as good at the chilli crab, it would be brilliant. Drinks at the ...

We wouldn't hesitate to stay at this hotel again and would highly recommend it to others. It would be best suited to younger people and families. The only slight downside is that it's about 15 minutes from Orchard road however public transport is so cheap that it's not really a big issue. The hotel is located within a 15 minute walk of China Town also and is only a 2 minute walk to the river front as the name suggests. The famous Zouk nightclub, a popular spot with younger tourists, is located about 3 minutes walk away from the hotel. If you cross the river and walk along the riverfront there ...
