Last time we were in Siem Reap there was a handful of bars and restaurants to choose from, now every building that lines the streets of the old market area has been converted to one, the place comes alive at night.

The biggest attraction ...

When we arrived Reena went to check the room out to make sure it was ok. We had been recommended this hotel at the one from Battambang. We liked it so checked in and breathed a sigh of relief to be out of that taxi. We had some tea in the room while we sorted ourselves out. We had laundry to give in and a plan to make for visiting Angkor Wat the next day. We discussed what we were going to do, made a list, showered and went to talk to the receptonist. We then went out for dinner at Sawasdee Food Garden. We got a tuk tuk there as it was a fair bit to walk and was on the othersideof the river. ...

Some people take a leisurely week to discover Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, but we decided to take it all in in just one day.

Hiring a tuk tuk guide, we set off from Shadow of Angkor at 8am - already, the main entrance was beginning to pack out with tourists of all nationalities - Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French, Germans, Americans, Canadians, Thais and a handful of locals.

We began at the central collection of temples dotted around Angkor Thom. And it was at this point that things took a turn from bad to worse!

Some how we managed to separate ourselves from the other back packers we were sat with after the bus had dropped us off and end up in a mini van that took us to what we were told was ...

Note:We aren't in the habit of doing this but we had such a great experience in Siem Reap with our superb Tuk Tuk driver that we want to preface this blog entry with a recommendation, in the strongest terms, for future travellers to use him too. Pin Pao (his first name is Pao - pronounced 'pow') can be reached on his Cambodian mobile at 012 203472 or on pinpao6117@hotmail.com - although he doesn't get the chance to check this every day so the mobile is better. We used his service for all three days we were in town and found him to be the perfect companion and advisor on all things local. Do ...

Okay so back and forth over the last few days as I have totally lost track of time. On the second day we also visited the Prey Chrouk School, school was a bit scattered as the kids sort of had the week off due to celebrations on Saturday. The visit to the school was the first time that F2 got an overdose of the rock star like attention he is getting while in Cambodia. The children point and smile and hear the word we will continually hear over these last few (and probably continuing days) “Barang”, Lonely Planet guidebook has this listed as foreigner however our Khmer guide says it actually ...

After a very bumpy 6 hour bus rider to Siem Reap, we arrived in the bus car park to haords of Cambodians trying to get our business. As we pulled up, about 40 men were banging on the windows showing us names of their guesthouses. We got off the bus to be physically pulled from pillar to post. I went for the bags, which they had already started lifting off the ground and i had to shout at them to 'leave the bags alone'. They were all crowding round us when we just jumped in one of their Tuk-Tuks to get the hell out of there!!! Some of the men were shouting at us, saying 'why you not take ...

For the last day at the temples, Steve and I decided we wanted to explore some of the temples that were further out, which required hiring a car. I was picked up at 9am and then collected Steve and Lou, who decided to join us. Erik and Frank had opted to get up for the sunrise and so had decided to relax for the rest of the day.

Our first stop was to the Land Mine Museum, which was small but interesting. The main focus was on a man, Akira, that as a child had laid hundreds of mines, but now dedicated his life to deactivating mines. To date, he has deactivated over 50,000. He also helps ...

flanked on either side by a long line of guard statues, each with a different
head. The top of the gate had four faces carved into it, one of each side. Angkor Thom (late 12 Century to early 13th Century) was the last capital of the

We had our first spin on a tuk tuk which was fun with lots of Japanese tourists laughing at us from the windows of their minibus!! They must have thought it really funny seeing two westerners and their backpacks being picked up by a tuk tuk. I have to say it was a shock at first but we now both love them. Theyre fast enough, cheap and you ...

Siem Reap is a city that is far behind keeping up with the local population and this is partly due to money being invested in the wrong places-a normal sight as I travel around Cambodia. It seems the money is going into building unnecessary HOtels rather than helping out the local people with medical, housing, and employment needs. There are numerous new expensive Hotels either in the process of being built or already built and most of them seem to be empty. I was told it was the slow season by the locals yet when at the temples I could not believe the amount of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese ...
