We went along to the annual celebration of the city that takes place as part of the Vendimia grape harvest festival. Situated in the park next to the civic centre there was a range of stalls from different districts of Mendoza offering free tastings of their new wines, or other produce from the region, fruit, chocolate, jams, olive oil etc. There was also a stage with folk music and the crowning glory - a big asado (BBQ). Basically a massive firepit that had animals of different sizes stretched on spits, ...

The scenery is just constant deserts and doesn't seem to change, except with the addition of the coastline. We got out and stretched our legs where we could but the bus didn't stop for long, at one point it left without some of the passengers, who managed to catch up to us at the next stop. Some of the towns looked ...

Before reaching Santiago we had already formed an opinion about the city. Most travelers which we have met in Peru and Bolivia were headed towards Buenos Aires for Christmas and New Years instead of Santiago. When asking why most of them made a face, as if to say isn`t it obvious, an answered simply that Buenos Aires is better in every way, like we should know this.
I was super skeptical about going to Chile after someone I met in Buenos Aires painted such a bleak picture of Santiago. She told me that she was robbed in Santiago 3 times and that there was absolutely nothing to do in the city. Having such low expectations from the get-go, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived here. My first treat was seeing an aerial view of the snow-covered Andes from the airplane. It was breathtaking! Wish I had my camera ready to capture the image. WOW!

I did have another surprise when I arrived at the airport, but not a good one. Apparently, if you live ...

So yes I finally arrived in South America which is the def the part of the trip I´ve been looking forward to most and I´m sure it wont disappoint. First stop Santiago, Chile. Having battled the taxi drivers at the airport with the help of an Irish and England girl (10 mil for 3 to the city centre) we made it to the city!

As South American cities go Santiago is considered quite western and relaxing but in comparison to the last cites I´ve visited in NZ and Oz this place initially felt very different, what with all the espanol sounds, signs and smells, but after a few days here of getting ...

It´s just amazing to me that it´s actually over. I feel that traveling has become a part of my life, like a new friend you like but who just won´t go away. It´s pretty obvious if you´ve been tagging along lately that I miss hearth n home big time and am ready to call it a half year, but there´s certainly a little twinge of Ís it really over? Honestly, no more new places to experience? Seriously, I have to get another job?¨ It´s a weird combo going on in my head right now, ...

I made it to Santiago after 15 hours on a cramped and noisy trip from Sydney. The airport was very well organised and laid out, which I didn´t expect. Warning to future travellers, watch out for dodgy taxi representatives. The taxis are not marked and look like normal cars and there is no meter. I wanted to share a cab with a fellow traveller and we were quickly escorted around by a cab representative who quoted 8USD pp for a ride into town. We agreed to this price but upon entering the taxi, he asked us to pay in Chilean pesos and he wanted 15,000 CP each which is equivalent to USD21. ...

Yes I am living the ordinary life but sometimes this becomes an ordinary Chilean life. This weekend is a perfect example.

It was another long weekend in Chile and a very important one politically. The Chilean president addressed the congress. A very interesting women. She is divorced and brought her children up on her own. Not unusual you might think. But actually it is, as her father was a collaborator during the dictatorship and she later found out that her husband was also. A subject that I am not yet confident to ask about, yet I heard a few stories, one from Patty who told me that ...

Felipe’s flat is right in the center of town, within walking distance to everything that could need.
After a beautiful day we hit the road again and alter a winding, rocky drive up the mountains we arrived at Felipe’s parent’s house in the country. It was as exactly as Felipe described it, absolutely wonderful.

There is no electricity so you have to use a generator to get light and hot water. Once the humming of the generator started you could see the cottage in all its glory. I can’t believe ...

Really nice steak and great value. The place was packed out when arrived at 2.30 and remained so until 4pm.

I (boy Alex) thought it was amazing, the steaks were really thick and juicy. But the thing that told me most about the place was a dad visiting with his studenty son (who must have been studying in the nearby university). Anyway, he looked REALLY miserable for the first 45 minutes, while his son sat there with his stubble and ipod. And then his steak arived. And he started grinning like a small child. I think I probably looked the same...

Well it is certainly the cheapest place to stay in santiago, but man does scott have some funny rules. mainly regarding water - like not being allowed to do any washing up and if you really have to not being allowed to use soap or water really. and rules about washing your clothes in dirty water. Plus the sink in th etoilet didn´t work and showed no signs of being fixed. He does have lots of maps and information though.

Snow-peaked mountains peering over skyscrapers and a great brown cloud hovering over the whole city. Where have we seen this before? Santiago, Chile was our first stop on mainland South America. The first two Spanish phrases we learned were 'Es Frio!' y 'Mas mantas por favor!' ('It's cold' 'More blankets please')

We quickly stocked up on cold-weather gear (fleece hat from an old lady on the street $1, used ski gloves $3, wool sweater $4, seeing each other in new outfits: priceless). We took advantage of the southern hemisphere winter to go boarding in August at El Colorado (how could we ...

We spent the whole day here. Mind you given that the day starts for this lot no sooner than mid-day, It isn't such a long time.Although it was after 7pm when we got home.

This park is simply amazing. we started the tour with a visit to the japanese gardens where we observed a very tenacious turtle trying to get to it's spot on the top of the rock. Very ambitious attempt and the first ended with being dumped back in the pond. After a while said turtle had quite an audience and finally made it - to a round of applause.

From there we headed up the hill for refreshments and a wander. ...

What a reception....we landed in Santiago on Wednesday early evening and were quite surprised by the place. Having come from a Portuguese former colony, to a Spanish former colony then there were quite few differences. For a start I actually stood a chance of conversing with the locals - however they were all so keen to speak English (unlike Brazil) that it was quite difficult to get them to respond in Spanish but it did make certain things easier actually understanding what people were saying to you.

Nick had booked our first hostel of the trip in Santiago and so we were a little ...
