Travel days usually make us a little restless and peckish and being in Italy for the first time, we decided to wander the streets looking for an authentic Italian Pasta experience.

As we slowly made our way along the street perpendicular to where we were staying, Linda casually mentions..."look at that"! As I raise my eyes from the pavement, lo and behold.........THE COLUSEUM!!! It was one of ...

The first two nights we stayed in central Rome, about 5 minutes north of Termini station in a brilliant hostel called The Yellow (which, when i come back, i will absolutely stay in). The first night we came in, expecting to get a good nights sleep and head out to the Vatican the ...

I arrived in Rome at lunchtime on Sunday and it was raining. It had been lovely in Florence when I left and started to rain just as the train was entering the suburbs of Rome. I decided to walk to the hotel rather than try and sort out the metro system with all my bags. I would have had to walk for 10 minutes from the nearest metro station anyway and I figured that I wouldn't get much wetter anyway. I did my ...

It was inevitable... Rome once more, and this time it would be for three days.

We arrived in Rome late in the evening, night already fallen, no accommodation to be had and a surprising lack of internet facilities in the central train station. And you will never guess where it was...

I have been dreaming of standing beside the Colosseum ...

We arrived in Rome late and were very happy to get settled into our hotel. Here is what we have done so far:

Day One: We did an tour of ancient Rome - Colloseum, Roman Forum, Palatine and Capitol Hill, Pantheon. These were all very cool sites to see (very different from the other sites we have seen so far). The colloseum was so big and it was so interesting to be inside of it. It was so hot today that we needed a siesta (break in the room) for a few hours. We then headed back out to the Spanish Steps (SOO overrated) and the Trevi Fountain.

Day Two: We went to Vatican City, the ...

After a short break yesterday (Friday) afternoon, we went back out to visit Villa Borghese--a beautiful park with gorgeous lakes and scenery. We also visited Piazza de Popolo, another impressive Piazza--one with churches, as well as shops, people...and more people! We returned to our hostel to get ready for a night on the town. We had a delicious dinner in Piazza Navona at at a cute little restaurant outside, Dolce Vita. We hurried over to the Spanish Steps to meet with the Spanish Steps pub crawl. We were welcomed by over 100 other bar goers!! (There were so many people that they actually had ...

Today we got a very early start to catch a train to the near-by city of Ostia Antica. By deciding to bypass a three hour train ride to Pompeii, we read that Ostia Antica was the next best thing. It turned out to be a perfect day trip for us! We left the hostel around 8am and took the metro to a regional train out to Ostia Antica--only about a 20 min train ride. The station at Ostia Antica was very small and quiet and we knew right away it would prove to be a relaxing day. We found the ruins of the city easily, as it was a five minute walk from the station. Getting there early in the morning, ...

They have this thing that's the "Taste of Italy" Pasta menu. There has to be a minimum of two people, and then the waiter will bring you a plate of pasta. You share the plate, and then he brings you a different dish of pasta. He keeps it coming (different pastas every time) until you tell him you're full. They calculate the price at the end (the more dishes, the more per person). We also had a house wine and all that for barely 30 Euros! ...

We woke up in Florence and had to hurry to check out as our train left at around 9:30 a.m. Thankfully our hotel is only a few minutes away from the train station. At the hotel, we found out about a walking tour that they advertise and we decided on booking that tour, which started at around 6:30 p.m. In the meantime, we decided to check out the Vatican and its many splendors.

We found ourselves at Piazza San Pietro, the ...

Day 24: Today, we woke up early so that we could head to the Colosseum to do a bit of our own exploring. When we got there, we saw a tour that was about to head out and with the price of the tour, you could skip the hour to two hour line to get in. Sounded good to us! We got to explore a bit of the Colosseum with our incredibly nice guide who told us lots of little things we just didn't know. We saw where the emperor would sit when he would watch the barbaric games that went on and where the animals were kept. She also showed us the archway where the gladiators would enter to meet ...

Next stop was Rome, where we spent 5 (very busy) days. We stayed at a hostel called Casa Olmata, which had really good little touches like free bottles of water on arrival and a free 'snack pack' when we left. They made our beds everyday too, something you rarely find in hostels! Plus, when we got there, one of the staff members carried both my bag AND Richard's bag (weighing probably more than 20kgs in total) to our apartment which was a 10 minute walk away... I don't know how he did it! I felt sorry for him though... I think he was overworked, as I saw him everyday we were there at hours ...

This is an "old style" Italian Hotel. Location is great, but it is not 5 star! We would rate it at about 2 - 3 stars, but we are really enjoying it never the less. We love a real authentic Italian experience and this is what you get at San Remo. I prefer this on holiday. Some of the big hotels seem like corporate world stuff...

eg, it has Italian style towels. To us they appeared like tea towels.

The breakfast is a bit boring and the same every day. Cheese and ham, weak coffee, dry pastries... It is complimentary, otherwise we would not have eaten there more than once.

The ...

This tour gives an excellent overview of the major sites in Rome, covering Piazza Venezia, Capitol Hill, the Forum, the Colloseum, St Pauls. Excellent commentary giving the historical significance of everything. The double decker bus gave a great view, but the airconditioning was not really functioning and it was stinking hot. Overall, very worthwhile introduction.

This tour started at 6:30 am, because there would be this real long line to get into the Vatical Museums. The bus picked us up at 6:45 and then went onwards to a bunch of other hotels to pick up the other guests. And then there was a stop at the office of the operator to make payments and pick a few others.

The tours themselves are pretty hi-tech. We each got radio and the tour guide spoke into his set on a particular channel which we were told. So everyone heard what he said and he didn't have to shout. As we walked towards the entrance, the line was huge.. probably the longest I have ...

So we woke up ate breakfast and left the hotel around 730 am.. we took the bus to the Vatican which actually didn’t even open until 10, but it was to wait in line for the sisteen chapel (sorry about spelling) because it is always so long.. I really don’t know how to explain how long the line was at the time we got there like 100 yard walls and it was along 2 by the time we got there. Well some dude came up to a few of the guys we are with (oh side note.. Missy and I hang out with 3 couples and Dot… so it was the guys) and offered to move us to pretty much the front of the line and give us a ...
