The day looked promising though - and turned out to be a good one.

We had some initial guides (locals) in the beginning. However, once we hit the ridgeline we took a more dificult ...

This last week has once again been filled with lessons and adventures…I guess it’s a good thing I picked this fabulous third world country after all. First off, my surfing skills are improving daily due to my bus standing skills. I don’t even have to hold on to the rails. I have also been able to cross more streets…on my own. I have gotten sick a couple more times, thanks to a few more 25-cent meals. I have learned to know where I am going before I actually get into the taxi, after being dropped off mid-trip because the driver didn’t know where I wanted to go. After a short walk through a ...

I made myself a beautiful “my name is Quena” sign and sat on my bags until my very hyper and hip host mother came to pick me up.

The next lesson I would learn is that riding a bus is a sport. The buses rarely stop here, they keep driving and commuters jump in ...

vividly walking down the short concourse with that precious yellow immigration
form, saving the memory of these first moments. Although this would be
disproved during my departure from the same airport, I remember thinking it was
small, makeshift, like ...

Had a couple of days before going to the Galapagos so I used one of them to go to this place in Quito that’s on the Equator. It’s very near Mitad Del Mundo which is a huge monument made hundreds of years ago to mark the line of the earths equator. There is a museum at Mitad too which I didn’t bother going to as it’s not located on the line at all. Whether the equator has moved since they built it or they just got it a bit wrong is debatable but thanks to some global positioning equipment loaned from the army there is now the Middle Of The Earth museum located exactly on the equator a couple of ...

It was Saturday and our host in Quito, Byron, took us out for the day. He brought along Angela. We took a metro bus out to the last stop past the airport. We changed to a bus for Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world .. ie. the equator). The entire journey of 1.5 hours cost only 35 cents. Always nice to have a local showing you the way.
In Quito now after a 7 hour flight from BA including a half hour layover at Guayaquil, Ecuador´s largest city. I arrived at Quito airport at about 9pm expecting someone from the school to pick me up. There were many people waiting at the airport with name placards but alas, none of them had my name on it. For the first time in my trip, I felt really alone. After briefly considering posing as Donald Russell (one of the names on the placards) I headed to the taxi counter to get a taxi into town. I had highlighted some hostels in the Lonely Planet that were close to the school and decided on ...

On the hill behind the San francisco church is the old water treatment plant. 18 months ago it was converted into a museum. And fantastic views of the old town.

There is a very good permanent exhibition of the history of Quito.
On the way to Quito we passed lots of rose farms. According to Tina, Ecuador roses are very expensive in Europe. These varieties would not grow anywhere else, they needed to be grown at around 2000 meters. Although they provides jobs and security for local people, the safety record is poor and employees health is often affected by the chemicals.

We arrived in Quito in the early afternoon. First impressions were of a modern clean city sprawled in the hills. Very colourful. The new town is Gringo Land. Nothing there except hotels, restaurants and shops. Convenient but soulless. The hotel ...

I’ve now spent a few days in Quito,
before and after Galapagos Islands and it’s been a
pretty relaxed visit. Quito
is at 2800 metres which has been a cheap thrill as all you need to do to get a
rush is stand up fast.. The city is situated in a valley surrounded by high
mountains and volcanos and is made up of the ´old town´ and ´new town´.
The old town had lots of beautiful Spanish style buildings in narrow streets
and new town is a hodge podge of old, new and in progress. The city is
fairly dodgy with lots of muggings and there are police all around (with about
a dozen different ...

We mangd to get the correct bus which trust me in Ecuador is no mean feat, and we looked at the old equator line (apparently some man worked it out years ago and they have since used sattelites to prov him wrong, but none of the guidebooks are allowed to tell you that where the monument is, is not the correct one, so lots of people miss it!)
And on to country number 7. We decided against the 38 hour bus journey and opted to fly from Lima to Quito. Quite expensive mind.

Stayed in the Mariscal area of Quito. Very surprised by how cosmopolitan the area is. Pretty touristy with international restaurants and lots of bars although lots of locals out on the town too.

We booked a couple of tours through Gullivers (definitely recommend this travel agent). The first of which took us to the Cotapaxi volcano, one of the highest active volcanos in the world.

We set off pretty early and caught a train to the national park ...

We landed late last night from Santiago and were glad to find that our hotel was quite modern and fully equipped with all mod cons - like a hairdryer!!! Oh my god it has only been a week but already a hairdryer feels like such a luxury!

Today is our first day and will be one of menial chores - like sorting washing and money out. We also need to take it easy as at an altitude of 2950m you can start to feel a little wobbly and need time to aclimatise.

Quito has alot to offer though as it is a Unesco World Heritage Site and so we will be exploring the sites tomorrow before we head off ...

The past week I stopped my spanish and salsa classes, and my volunteer job, and I have been spending my free time celebrating the Quito holidays with Bogar. The wax museum is about the history of Ecuador, and they use wax people to help explain this history. The Camilo Egas museum is of the artwork of Camilo Egas who was is a famous artist of the past. I also went to the exhibit ¨Tres Grandes de España¨which included artwork ...

The past weekend was really good because Bogar didn´t work and I wasn´t sick.
