It's on the corner on Rua de Rosa and Travessa Dos Fieis de Deus. Les Mauvais Garcons (galeria - cafe - bistro) has delicious meals, desserts and ambiance. the large corner window is the place to sit and people watch. Pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists pass by constantly, making the whole scene pulse with life. And so it is in this neighborhood of Lisboa at night, too. It is a diamond in the rough: the sparkles giving away its beauty. We dropped our bags at our chic little hostel in the baixa then wandered around til we could check in. Someone at the hostel recommended we ride tram 28 for a great scenic tour of the city. The language was near unintelligible so I couldn´t hope to commune much with the people, but the real appeal for me was in folky, crumbling hills that bordered stately plazas-cum-tourist meccas.</p><p>The first night, A and I met up with Ruby, who was on holiday from her job in Austria. The sand here is similar to home which is nice but Jagger continuously found cigarette butts everywhere (now we know and appreciate why Mooloolaba have banned smoking on the beach!!)</p><p>The Marina is lovely, very new and not too many locals go there. Started at the Praca do Commercio (Commerce Square) where there was a beerfest going on under the statue! Through the gate onto the Ru da Prata, where the shops were closing down but the outdoor restaurants were in full swing! The Monument of Discoveries is a beautiful sculpture commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the death of Prince Henry, the mastermind navigator behind Portugal’s voyages of discoveries, including Brazil, and subsequent fantastic wealth. The most photogenic place I´ve ever visited. Filled with tourists, even pre-tourist season, everyone with a map and a guidebook (mostly in German) and a confused expression.</p><p>The Lisboans know how to live, as far as I can tell. They drink plenty of coffee at the coolest cafe´s and patiseries from vintage ceramic restaurant ware standing at the espresso bar. They don´t eat on the go like we americans, they take time to enjoy their coffee and pastry which is quite refreshing and sets an example i wish to follow. It had all the amenities you could want--two computers, beautiful lounge area, a bar, a patio, amazing location right by a view point of the sea, comfortable beds, wonderful staff, home-cooked meals, beautiful kitchen and dining room, and immaculately clean. This place is by far the best hostel I have been to, and I've been to A LOT. It is especially interesting for the fish hall at the rear of the market where many fish are dissected and sold. If you are squeamish, it is possible to view this from the gallery running around the market so you do not get too close to the action. Flowers and fruit are, as expected, of very high quality. The garden is about 500 metres high, so it is an exciting journey up there. One of the things I enjoyed was this bird’s eye view of the city ; it is a civil engineer’s dream.
