Poland was to be my first destination on my adventure to 'see the world.' So after a train ride to London and a night of sleep in the Stansted airport, I arrived in Krakow. The reason for going there was to visit Auschwitz, but we found out Krakow itself is a good enough reason to go there. The first day there we explored the city center and the castle. We discovered this castle after arriving there and looking at the map. We had known about it beforehand, and it was quite a nice surprise. Turns out Krakow was where the royalty of Poland lived in those days, so this was one awesome ...

Walily Stacja is the village where my grandfather lived and where my father grew up after the age of 7. It is a small village of about 50 houses on the edge of the primeval forest where my grandfather worked as a forester. The houses are very modest but of great charm. The forest has been the source of lumber for some time, particularly during the second world war during the German occupation, but it has been managed with skill and retains the randomness of nature. My father and uncle spent a night in this forest, having been chased up a tree by a wild boar, and had to await the arrival of ...

After a quick stay in London it was time to head out to Europe and get on with the trip. Unfortunately I had figured on activating my train pass in Poland but as it turns out Poland hasn't jumped on the bandwagon yet. Oh well, I still have until the 17th... in the meantime I'll make the best of it.

Krakow is a great city, as it was virtually untouched during the war the historic buildings are still standing and look fantastic! There is no shortage of ancient cathedrals and a few basilicas (I'm not sure on the difference between the two) not to mention the massive castle in the heart ...

Well, I finally made it to the hostel on the first night after walking forever and via I think most of the suburbs of Krakow to get here. I walked for 1.5 hours to get to somewhere that was only 15 minutes from the station. It doesn't help that the bus station isn't where it is marked in the Lonely Planet and there are no signs in the bus station directing you to the city. I ended up following the mass of people assuming that they would be heading towards the city centre but obviously not. I wandered on streets that aren't marked on my map for a while before finally going by sense of direction ...

Yo no sabía muy bien lo que habían dicho por los altavoces aunque me lo imaginaba y ya había decidido hacer lo que hiciera todo el mundo pero por si acaso ya que había visto una chica estudiando alemán en ...

Warsaw was impressive and hot ! Bright sunshine took daytime temperatures into 40 degrees and in the sun you felt your skin cooking. Every trip we took sapped energy so we tried to set out early and avoid the worst of the sun. We enjoyed our time here not so much for the city but more for the luxurious hotel which offered a refuge from the heat.

The most imposing building we saw was the Palace of Culture. This huge soviet monolith was visible from just about any where in the city. It housed some art collections and had an exhibition aimed at children with interactive science ...

This is a fantastic hotel I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. The facade was old Poland a rare sight in Warsaw due to damage from the war. The inside however was 21st century, large airy reception area greeted you then the staff were efficient and attentive. We then were impressed by the quality of thre room. Large space with luxiroious furniture and fittings. Air conditioning was excellent and could be controlled well. This was a relief as the tremperature outside was aroud 40 degrees.

Our day started in Wilanow, which is right outside of Warsaw. There's a palace there that's really nice (and somehow wasn't destroyed during WWII like 90% of Warsaw). The palace had great art inside but the people working inside were in every room and they were really mean. It started with walking into the place (bad sign right there). The woman at the coat check told me in Polish what I assume was "You can't wear your coat in there!" I didn't really understand but I walked up to her and someone else said we couldn't wear our coats so I took it off and put it on the counter for her to ...

This weekend, Steven, Andrea, and I took advantage of our optional three day weekend and flew to Poland. It was quite the trek just getting to airport, as the train doesn’t go there, and it’s a 50 minute car ride away. We walked to our train station, caught the train to a neighboring city, and took a bus from there to the airport. Miraculously, we made it! Unfortunately, Steven and I ran into some costly issues at the airport that totaled 100 euro ($135) in unnecessary fees. I was not a happy camper.

The flight over was nice, and I had pretty much forgotten about our airport fiasco when ...

Oh well, here goes again:

I woke up this morning at 0930, 1.5 hrs later than I had hoped. It was okay though because I needed the extra sleep. I guess hiking yesterday was more tiring than I thought it was for my body. I caught a 1100 bus to Auschwitz (Osweicim) for 7 zloty. I rode for 1.5 hrs to the Auschwitz Muzeum is, this is the same place as the concentration camp. The government decided to preserve the entire area as a memorial to those who died in the concentration camps. The buildings still ...

I feel much better today yet again. But now I'm really drowsy. I started walking out anyway. I did a lap around the city center's Old Town. There wasn't much there but the normal tourist attractions and street-performers and vendors selling nothing worth buying. I walked up to Wawel Hill, which is sort of equivalent to their castle. I saw their armory which was neat. THey had a lot of swords, guns (like musket-style), knight's armor, helmets, shields, lances, horse's adornments, and...those weapons that look like axes on long poles. Anyway, I was glad to see those because I haven't ...
