According to most everyone, the narrow, twisty mountain road was probably as bad as the 12- seater plane ride we’d originally been afraid of - but we had few options at this point in time! The driving was extremely uncomfortable (especially on the far side of the pass & especially with all my morning coffee sloshing around) but I will have to admit that the view of the Cordillera Blanca Mountains above Huaraz was worth it. Andes Mountains High! Even today ...

On the way back, the driver was going particularly fast and crazy, causing her to yell ¨Senor! yo estoy enferma. NO MAS!".... ha ha ha ha he he he err eh

We were awoken by a small earthquake on one night, which was kind of ...

How could I have doubted?! We did indeed find our way out of our "secret garden".. but only because Mario & Natali picked us up the next morning with the van. We were scheduled for a visit to the most important town in the Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo, a 'Novo Andean' lunch, & then a train trip!

First we stopped in O-town, itself, to pick up a couple necessities, but didn’t really have time to look around much. A pity because I think I liked this place the most of any small town I saw in the whole of Peru!

Then we drove up into the ruins… what a lot of steep terraces! (We ...

We were driven to ...

They were first established in the 50`s when people starting to come to Rio from broader Brazil and had nowhere to live.
So we got to Cusco from arequepa by yet another WONDERFUL coach journey (yay). We hung around in Cusco for a few days (doing frankley sweet F.a) then emptied half our bags into storage and set off for the Inca alternative trail of Salkantay.

First day we were picked up at 5.30 am (joy) and drove on a coach for 4 hours to a small town Mollepata on the outskirts of Cusco. We had a nice breakfast and we met some amazing calafornians, kate and brendan who were as sarcastic as us (i know we were shocked too).

After breakfast messy managed to buy 50 soles(10 quid) batteries that didnt ...

Wow. We switched the Chavin de Huantar tour to today - so that we could be sure to get in. I could just imagine the pilgrims converging on this religious center - populated by more than 3,000 priests & attendants - and I was curiously intrigued to rest my backpack on ...

After a horror night we arrived in Chachapoyas at 6:00 AM. The bus was fully occupied, not really roomy, had no AC, it rained the whole night, the streets were in a bad shape and really twisting, the windows rattled and condensed water was dripping from the ceiling the whole night. Later on we found out, that we paid a price on the ...

The flight over the Andes was really beautiful ... snow covered mountains, lots of green and the whole time I felt like we almost hit the top of the mountains :-). When I arrived in Cusco (really early in the morning) Alex was already waiting for me ... we graped a taxi and found a hostel right in the center of Cusco.

Cusco is a nice town in the middle of the Andes and a starting point for a lot activities in the area. The main attraction is sure enough Machu Picchu. But my Hike to Machu Picchu wouldn´t start until a day later so we had plenty of time to explore some ruins near the city.

Like Donna described it: It was amazing, tough, wouldn´t do it again and will recommend it to everybody! But let me give you one advise (Susanne and Christ, listen carefully!): If you ever plan to do the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, go to the Gym and just do the StairMaster over and over ... for at least 5 hours a day, seven times a week and a year long!!!
Le lac Titicaca, c'est incontournable pour les amoureux du paysage et de la culture.
We left Cusco by bus early in the morning on Cruz del Sur for
Puno. From Puno we had arranged a night at a hotel and to be
picked up by Crillon Tours for our journey across Lake Titicaca and
into Bolivia.

The most common route is to get the bus from Puno to La Paz which
involved a ferry crossing. However we had done quite a few buses
and felt like we wanted to see Titicaca more closely. So we
splashed out a bit extra for an organised tour and stay on the Lake
involving a night on the Sun Island and a trip to the Moon
island. This was to take place over 2 days with us finally ...

Compared to the size of this continent, eight hours in a bus is a rather short and meaningless trip. Such a stigma does not make bus ...

After several days of enjoying the refined Cusco, the time had come to see the Incan Holy Valley. Machu Picchu lies about 110 km from Cusco and enroute are several less-famous but also impressive sites, all poised imperiously above the Incan Holy Valley with the Urubumba river snaking below.

Wanting to see all that is pre-Columbian we decided to take a tour of the Holy Valley that would leave us in Ollantaytambo, from where we would catch the train to Machu Picchu. Of course there was also a contingent of riot police, obviously the old women can get out of hand!
