The kids wake early and once again work on their journals before we set out. They are really good about it. Collecting ticket stubs and brochures to stick in and working on their writing.

Although we are still waking up very early it seems to take forever to get away. It was one of those gorgeous brisk winter days. Clear but cold. The last day in Paris was strange. Twice that day our tour leader would say that an unfortunate event that befell our tour group had never occurred before in his twenty years of running tours. And I came down with a bad respiratory illness. We started the day with a morning ride on the Seine River cruise which recapped all the famous sites we saw earlier. Well after a pleasant if not swaying overnight ride in a sleeper carriage (Linda couldn't face another airport), we arrived well rested for our Aussie assault on Paris. Our first impressions were mostly positive, as the sun was shining, the streets were clean and the people friendly. With only five days to see everything Paris had to offer, we quickly dropped our bags off at our Montmatre home and went for a wander. I was keen to see how my year 8 French lessons and 10 week French class would hold up in the world of wine, pastries, and escargot.

I arrived in Paris on Sunday the 13th after a big night out in London and hadn't slept in awhile. I ended up not doing much excpet going over to the McDonalds across the road. Since I'm a big fan of the movie Pulp Fiction....I had a Royal Cheese!
Day 2 was much more eventfull! I started with a open top bus trip around to the major sights to get my barrings on where things were. Then headed out walking on my own. Day two. Up at the earliest opportunity and straight into Paris. It???s Wednesday, so it must be the Louvre. No, really! It was closed on Tuesday. Luckily arriving this early beats the queues. Inside the magnificent Pyramid I bought my Musee Carte and hit archaeology and Italian Renaissance art. The Eiffel Tower
Okay! First day in Paris; so where do I start? Well I couldn???t really miss a huge lump of metal like the Eiffel Tower. I arrived very early on a bright sunny (and slightly hazy) morning. I joined one queue briefly, until I realised they were walking up. Then I switched to the lazy side ??? after all there is no point peaking too early.

I didnt stay at my hotel last night. I ended up in a tiny apartment in the 13th Arondissement and had to make my way back up to the Marais. I got directions to Porte D'Ivery METRO and wandered up silent roads at six o'clock in the morning. One of my pleasures in life is to make my way home from a different part of town after a night out and this time it didnt take long to get the METRO back to Temple and have a change of clothes.

Versailles carries baggage. Versailles is history. It carries a pathos and a memory of an era, a monarch and a time that was so striking in history. So-- we thought we'd leave London and have a few hours of travel into Paris. A subway train, a bus, another bus, a ferry, a third bus, a train, another train, another subway train, a fourth bus, a trolley, and 11 hours later we arrived at our new hostel. Our journey began in Miami as we boarded Air France Flight #95 bound for Paris. We used Frequent Flier miles for the air portion of our trip, and fortunately we were able to get seats in business class. Zut Alors! My feet ache!
Paris is very hard on the shoeleather but very pleasing to the eye. After a night out exploring the zinc bars of Le Marais last night I needed a brisk stroll to work off my alcohol battered head. Little did I know that my brisk stroll would last nine hours from eight in the morning to five in the afternoon. With a couple of sitdowns at cafes to rest my weary legs.

One of the great wow moments of Paris is your first glimpse of the Coeur Napoleon.
This great courtyard is flanked by the two arms of the Louvre Palace whose facade is decked with the statues of kings. Smack in the centre of the courtyard is a glass pyramid. The pyramids clear cut lines contrast sharply with the architecture of the ancien regime surrounding it. Its modernist feel just felt so distinctive against the old lamposts and fountains of the palace of kings - a work of art in itself.

I felt a little bit of shame when buying my METRO billet to get me to the Eiffel Tower. After all, it just seems to touristy. I was up and having a baguette breakfast at 9.30 in the morning. I chose a boulongerie just off Republique on the edge of La Marais.I've deliberately picked a section of Paris that is not in the middle of the tourist world. Le Marais is very workaday and becoming gentrified. Most of it is medieval or at least 16th Century and is a maze of narrow cobbled streets. Arrived! Safe and sound. It feels strange to visit Paris with friends as this city has always been known to be the romantic honeymoon city. After we touchdown from our Ryanair flight, we headed to the metro. We got stuck there for a bit as we didn't know which direction we should head. Finally, we purchased a 3-day pass for 18.25 Euros and found our way to Aloha hostel.
We had a good experience in Paris as we were approached by an old lady who asked if we needed help. People tell us that French are snobbish people but it sure didn't seem like that to us.

Autumn must officially be here in Paris and (even though I was freezing today and entirely under-prepared for the change in weather), I was appreciative of being here to see it.
