Thursday 25 January

I went to the newly refurbished Pierpoint Morgan Library (they seem to prefer to be called the Morgan Library these days). I did not care for the new link connecting existing buildings (designed by Renzo Piano). It seemed very industrial in character ; lots of steel trusses and a glass roof which seemed to be very effective in collecting leaves and other debris. The collection is impressive and in particular, an exhibition of Saul Steinberg (most famous for his New Yorker covers) was an eye opener. His collages were special ; but my favourites were bogus passports ...

The purpose of coming home mid-trip is simple....My best friend since childhood welcomed her first child on January 2nd, the day that we were on a plane to Ecuador, and I couldn't wait until the end of August to meet him. When we decided to make a stop in NY, our moms, my sister, and my nephews, decided to join us! We had a perfect and rejuvenating weekend together.

Before Matt and I left for this trip, I had not gone without seeing my sister and nephews for ...

We arrived at Heathrow the mandatory half-day before our flight much to our inconvenience as we found the flight had been delayed a couple of hours. The eight-hour flight was smooth probably as we were upgraded due to some seatbelt failures back in cattle class. Despite BA's best attempts at seperating Emma and I, a belligerent Emmy wasn't letting up till we were back together again.

The first impression of JFK Airport was bleak. Post September 11, the customs gang was giving us the right royal going over. I’ve had job interviews less stressful and after giving every detail apart from ...

Our day started with a visit to The Top of the Rock, the observation deck high on the Rockefeller Center. There are actually three levels, with outdoor spaces to better enjoy the view. The top level, on the 70th floor, has the best views. Beware, on a cold day it's hard to make yourself stay out there long! The wind really gets to you. But then again, so does the view. Great views of Central Park, the Empire State Building, and Manhattan in general. My friends liked this viewpoint best of all (they hadn't been to the Empire but liked a view of it, rather than from it) but I liked the ...

New York City is so interesting and filled with so much beautiful architecture, activities, and shopping areas, that we walked 46 blocks this day and barely noticed them passing by! We took the subway up to 86th St. and then headed over to the Met on 82nd St and 5th Ave. The Met, or Metropolitan Museum of Art, is so huge that you really don't want to do it all in one day - you will just get exhausted. This time, we focused on the 19th and Early 20th Century European Paintings and Sculpture section. I was especially happy with the Impressionist (my favorite!) section.
Most people go to Times Square to see the ball drop on New Year's Eve. Our two friends did it, and truly enjoyed it, but my sister and I just couldn't stomach standing in Times Square all day. Be aware that if you go, you need to get there mid-afternoon in order to secure a good spot. Also, once you are in, you are in. You are not allowed out to get food or use the bathroom. My friends were literally there from about 5pm until midnight, relying on their own snacks and their strong bladders. I never would have made it. Instead, my sister and I went to see a Chris Rock show. But more on ...

We started this day late. Our first interest, of course, was eating lunch! We took the subway down to Chinatown and went to the Chinatown Brasserie, a very nice, large, and well-decorated restaurant. Getting dim sum with friends was fun and left us with some room for snacks later.

After visiting the firehouse that was used in "Ghostbusters" (yay for touristy photos in front of a movie location!), we got a snack at Rice to Riches. Rice to Riches is a fun eatery that serves an amazing selection of rice puddings. You can select both interesting flavors and toppings. I chose the ...

The MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) is expensive - $20 for adults. It makes me regret throwing away my college student ID in a fit of honesty - the student discount would have been nice! We got there pretty early but there was already a line stretching down the sidewalk in front of the building. Luckily it moved fast and everything seemed very organized. I really appreciated that they allow photography in this museum, even if no flash is allowed. I did my best to take pictures of the Monet's since he is one of my favorite artists, but without the flash they turned out looking like, well, ...

Our first day in New York City we took it easy, partly because we were a little overwhelmed by the masses of people! Crowds are something to be expected anytime you travel to a large city, but during Christmas break I found the size of the crowds almost ridiculous! I think the amount of people contributed to the slower pace of our days - it's hard to get anywhere fast when you can only move as fast as the crowd (or be constantly weaving, pushing, and accidentally pushing your way through). Still, all the people contributed to the festive atmosphere of NYC over the holidays, and it's part of ...

People tripping over themselves at the baggage carousels in JFK airport, the mad rush of shoppers on 5th Avenue over the Christmas weekend, queuing to see the GIANT Christmas tree at Rockefeller Centre and Times Square, if you werent' pushed over by the families of 20 or more, you were lucky!!!

For these 3 nights and 3 days we based ourselves in Radio City, W 49th Street, Midtown Manhattan,so very close to Times Square, Rockefeller Centre and the NBC Studios. This city proved to be everything I thought and hoped ...

Prospect Park is one of our favorite places in Brooklyn, and Nancye and Paul are members so we went to a special "Member's only" evening walk in the Botanic garden. We enjoyed the rock garden and the Japanese garden. We saw and heard several interesting birds, including mockingbird, and in the children's Discovery Garden we saw an "eyeball" plant, which we'd never seen before--Jason punched at the blossoms trying to give them blackeyes! Following along the stream in the garden we saw a mallard duck with just hatched baby ducks. Nancye and Jason went thru a thicket of bamboo where they ...

We arrived in New York on the afternoon of the 2nd, after our first taste of Amtrak traIns, which turned out to be very comfy. Having never been to NYC, we both were exited at the prospect - It's one of those cities which everyone feels they know so well from TV and movies etc., but the real thing is so much better.

We couldnt believe our luck when we arrived at the residence inn. From our 32nd floor apartment suite we could see the NYC skyline and Times Square. Our first few hours were spent strolling around times sq. and broadway, just soaking it all up. Its an incredible city with ...

For some reason, it was no easy task trying to secure a place to stay in New York for our yearly weekend pilgrimage. So, my husband turned to Craig's List and responded to a woman renting her apartment on the Upper East Side for $134.00/night. We went for it. And we were glad!

Yes, it was a very, VERY tiny studio apartment. There is no turn down service-no mint on the pillow--no spa or luxurious amenities. There is the aspect of being in someone's home--sleeping in their bed, glancing at the CD's and books stacked on a wall of shelves. It's a little uncomfortable though the apartment's ...
