We spent a restless night due to the sound of rats scampering around in the
ceiling and Janette being struck down with a severe bout of diarrhoea. There
being no improvement by the following day she popped a couple of tetracycline,
which only caused her to throw up. So
she remained groaning in bed while I smoked a pre-breakfast spliff, (despite
having awoken with a sore throat) and then went out for a stroll. It was a
chilly morning as I wandered slowly around the Darbar Square area marvelling at the
architecture and the faces of the people, all so different from India. ...

B ...

We had an early breakfast and were on the trail at 7:23am.

We continued up the Dudh Kosi gorge, following a trail that brought us through a number of riverside villages and then we officially entered Sagarmatha (Mt.
I have just returned from ten days trekking through the Himalayan mountains. Did the Jomosom trek, started at Nayapul, then to Tikehdungha, Ghorepani, Sikha, Tatopani, Ghasa, Larjung, Marpha, Kagbeni, and instead of flying back as planned we ended up walking and jeeping it back to Beni and then onto Pokhara. The reason we didn't fly back to Pokhara from jomosom was because there hadn't been flights for 6 days due to snow and wind! So that ruined that plan. Bhuwan (with Himalayan Outdoor club in Kathmandu), my local Nepali guide did a fantastic job of showing me through some awesome locations, ...

All checked luggage goes though an x-ray machine and then a machine puts a strap around it. All cabin luggage is searched it twice, and all people are “patted down” in addition to walking through metal detectors. Finally we navigated through all the proper lines and made it to the gate.I noticed a Wilderness Travel luggage tag on a lady’s hand ...

We arrived in Kathmandu after a grueling tour of Rajistan, looking for a place to rest our feet and perhaps take a warm shower. We actually got both, for a little while anyway, as we arrived at my Aunts family’s hotel in the outskirts of the city in a Tibetan enclave called Bouddha. Once the starting and stopping place for Tibetan traders, it is now a refuge for the Tibetans driven from their country by the Chinese occupation. My Aunt and her family were amongst these refugees in the sixties and while she has moved on to Los Angeles and married my uncle, her family operates a large hotel ...

However, we learned that due to fog in Kathmandu no planes had left yet. We sat outside in the sun..talked and waited. We heard a siren at the airport. That means a plane had left Kathmandu. Ours is the second Yeti flight of the morning, so we will have to wait a while. We went to the airport at 9:30am, but had to wait until 11:15 for our plane.

While waiting in the airport we saw a trekker being transported by helicopter to Kathmandu. He broke his arm. We assumed he fell along one ...

We were back on the trail by 12:47, starting down Namche Hill. As we were going down, I wondered how I ever got up. It ...

We were always served protein and carbs.

As part of the Mani Rimdu festival, the monks procession was to start at 1:00pm. We ...

The Lukla runway is on a 20 degree slope going up which makes it easier for the planes to stop on the 1600 foot runway. It is at 9150 feet elevation. Our cook, Phuri comes to our table at every meal to make sure everything is OK. There is always plenty of food.. We can tell that they have been trained in hygiene procedures. Everything is always clean, and we have soap and water to wash our hands before every meal.

We started the trek to Pangboche at 8:54am, walking mostly through a rhododendron forest. It was a beautiful walk. We crossed one high new metal bridge. The old one is still in place ...

Overnight nothing much changed weather-wise. In fact the cloud had got so bad on the morning of the third day that I couldn't even see from one end of the hotel to the other; the entire 50 metres of it.

To get to Bhaktapur the group vote was unanimous that instead of taking the more scenic 3 hour walk to a bus stop, we would go directly to the local bus stop.

As the old bus wound its way along the narrow muddy track to Bhaktapur, I wondered about my safety and began planning what I would do if it tipped over the side of the mountain. Inside it was overcrowded, hot and smelled like ...

The cloud was here to stay.

It rained so much today, the inside of my faithful umbrella was just as wet as the outside and, with my light shower jacket, I was having trouble discerning whether I was wet from the rain or sweat.

There was, at least one thing that had promised by our leader to be better today, and that was the ...

This morning I was rudely awakened to a friend pounding on our hotel door. Thank you very much for that; I really could have done with that extra hours' sleep.

When my ears finally found the right connection with my brain, I realised what all the fuss was about and why everyone was running round like headless chooks. Because out there, there was a fair dinkum mountain.

I took myself to a new level of arising and dressing that day. In 7 seconds, I was out the door and running along the terrace when I realised I didn't know which direction to run to see the mountain. (Oh, to the ...

30/10
