Four sore feet later.... we took the bus, the Turibus (patent pending apparently).

Toured a large part of the city in relative luxury, headsets thrown in! From the very posh areas of Zona Rosa and Polanco (Burberry, Gucci etc like Bond Street) to the more everyday areas with MacDonald´s and Radio Shack - can´t knock it as we had to pay a visit to buy battery chargers which would work with the half-hearted voltage here (only 110v).

Highlight of the day was the visit to the Anthropological Museum - one of the best museums in the world, for MesoAmerican artefacts, history and culture. ...

We ate at the pizzeria twice on the ship. It's located at the top of the atrium area.

The first time I had the California pizza and it wasn't that great. It had avocado and sun dried tomatoes on it. The minestrone soup was pureed, which I'd never had minestrone that way before. Mike had pepperoni and it was much better.

The second time, I had the vegetarian pizza with pepperoni added and it was very very good.

We had the same server both times and he was very friendly, more so than some of our dinner servers. The ambience of the place was really neat, sort of had a ...

We checked in to Hotel Isabel in the Centro Histórico district, and it seemed like a fine establishment (although we did have to share a matrimonial bed which led to matrimonial squabbling and ‘accidental’ kicking) – we even had cable TV to watch Legally Blonde! But the place was miserably dark and a bit unfriendly, a case in point being the episode of getting locked in to the shared bathroom because some other guest thought it would be funny. So after 2 nights, having ruled out the hostel-cum-Quaker house in the red light district, we moved next door to Hostal Amigo, which lived up to its ...

We arrived in Topolobampo, on the mainland, at 9.00pm and drove to Los Mochis. Camping on a derelict piece of ground at midnight we had to be up at 4.00am for the train on the Copper Canyon Railway. I have taken to sleeping on the roof of the truck, which is 4 metres off the ground and not a great place to a) sleep walk, or b) wake up bursting for the loo. We had 2 nights in a nice, clean ...

We took a flight from San Cristobal to Mexico City. Originally we were planning on getting a bus but it turned out the flights were more or less the same price and 16 hours quicker!

We decided to try out the Metro to get to our hotel from the airport. A very interesting journey! Lots of characters on the trains trying to earn a bit of money busking and doing very wierd activites. One guy even rolled out a blanket full of broken glass and walked accross in in the middle of the carriage!

We stayed at the Hotel Isabel, in the Isabel Catolica area. The area is pretty central, just a ...

Today was our first full day in Mexico City!!!

Yesterday we flew into Mexico City about 7pm Mexico time. We decided to catch a cab. All of the books that we have read say that make sure you get an authorized taxi else they will kidnap you and take your organs! Wicked! So this was going to be the interesting bit!

Got out of customs and headed to the authorized taxi stand. What we had to do was go to an office stand and tell them where you want to go and pay for them there. They will then give you a ticket and then someone will take you to the taxi. We got onto the cab all ...

This castle was amazingly beautiful. It was on a huge hill in the city. The gardens and views were spectacular and everything about it was breathtaking. This was probably the only real "tourist attraction" we visited, and I would definitely recommend it.

Mexico City, well in short was amazing!
After a day or two of traveling, we arrived at the missionary's house in downtown Mexico City. We were tired, but it was exciting to be in a new country.

One of the best parts about the house was the view from the roof of the house. When you looked out you could see all of the city- no matter which way I turned there were houses and lights and people! It was so beautiful and a little intimidating to be in such a big place! Also along all the rooftops were broken glass and barbed wire-to keep robbers out.

Each day we did something new. One ...

I have a large warm room with tv, dvd player, desk, and private bathroom. I get to practice a little Spanish with the family, but they mostly like to practice their English with me!

Most days on my walk to the family house, I disturb a lizard or 2 sunning themselves on the hot concrete.
Well after a rather hellish 24 hour journey (I swear Iberia must be some kind of long distance budget airline) I finally arrived in Mexico City.

And how to describe it...

...22 million people crammed into a grimy valley where everyone is selling something, shouting at someone, honking their horn or blasting terrible music at 200 decibels into the sky.

Still its kinda addicting in its own crazy way.

In 5 days I have:

1) Flirted with my inner Indiana Jones my visiting Aztec and Toltec temples at Teotihuacan (got up at 5 to be the first to climb the Pyramida de la ...

Revolution Day, 2006. Hotel restaurant was closed, so I wandered down the street to find somewhere to eat for breakfast. A few minutes down the road I found a Sanborn's Restaurant - like Macca's, in that they're everywhere!

Sat down and ordered - with help from a local who spoke English - a cheese and mushroom omelette, with a mixed fruit juice as well. Mexican omelettes are an experience - when I make an omelette, I mix up the eggs, cook, add mushrooms, etc onto omelette, and then fold over. Not in Mexico! Any extras are simply added to the top of the omelette (see photo)!

Th ...

Bar La Ópera and Cafe Tacuba were the two places I really wanted to visit whilst in Mexico City, so I spent lunch here, and then dinner in the evening at Cafe Tacuba.

After only a short stroll from my hotel - approx. 10 minutes - at Alameda Central, I arrived at the restaurant, which I walked past at first glance. I was expecting something fancy outside, but it looks fairly normal outside - all the fancy work is inside.

My experience here mirrored my Mexico City experiences - no waiters spoke English, and I spoke 0% Spanish.
During my months of preparation I came across the name of this restaurant on more than one occasion, and usually with a good review. The book I used for this trip ("DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to Mexico") also mentioned this restaurant.

I went there on a Sunday night, around 7pm, which is early by Mexican standards, so I just missed out on the musicians, but I still had a good spot, and great food. I tried the enchiladas, which came in a silver metal bowl, with two chicken enchiladas, covered in guacamole and cheese. The menu didn't mention what was in the enchilada, and the waiters ...

Spent most of my time wandering around museums and art galleries and using the metro 'cos its only 2 peso (about 6p) a journey and I haven't ...

What we had to do was go to an office stand and tell them where you want to go and pay for them there. They will then give you a ticket and then someone will take you to the taxi. We got onto the cab all fine, ...
