First thing to do in Melbourne was of course to track down Ramsey Street. They still film all of the street scenes in Neighbours in a little cul-de-sac in a suburb about 20kms from Melbourne city centre, so we drove up there, took a few photos, tried to work out who's house was who's, and then dodged the security guard to get away.

'It's a lot smaller than it looks on the TV'

Got into Melbourne and had a walk around the trendy shops, which was a shame as we still didn't have any money, or any thing we wanted to buy. But had dinner with Dom and Toni, who we knew from Brighton. ...

Ah Melbourne. It sometimes reminds me so much of Seattle that my head does a little Matrix like blip and I'm standing suddenly on the corners of 1st and Madison, looking up towards Pike Place Market. When we arrived here it was finally 'bloody hot' and we spent the first few days exploring beaches and air conditioned places. We arrived on the weekend of the Australian Grand Prix, which is apparently a big deal, and was also being held two blocks away from Gary and Bojana's. As we sat around the dinner table, drinking wine and sharing stories from our mutual travels the roar of qualifying ...

At that time in the morning, none of the crews were around so there wasn't that much to see.

The early start gave me time to rush round to the entrance of the paddock to see if I could bag myself some more photos and autographs. In the end I was stood there for 4 hours, but it was worth it. I had a really nice bunch of people around me and we had a laugh. The drivers ...

Well, my 8 weeks in Melbourne are finally over!!! Its gone so quickly its untrue!

As both myself and Claire weren't working Thursday we decided to have a wander round the city to see all the christmas decorations that had been but up! So we went to the Cox Plate instead.

Both races are part of the Spring Racing Carnival, which every year hosts an event known as "Fashions on the Field".
Now this is a hostel with character! Formerly a real nunnery it retains its stained glass windows and great old wooden floors and fixtures - but with clean and welcoming rooms and facilities. Situated right opposite the Victoria National Musuem (free internet!!) and right outside a tram stop it was well located. The staff were very helpful and although at AUD$28 per person for a bed in a 6 person dorm it was a shock to the wallet (after being in dirt-cheap Asia for 4 months) it was good value for Melbourne. The common room, kitchen and laundry were also useful. Two small gripes - the ...

Everyone in Sydney kept telling me that everyone in Melbourne was prudish and proper, but I can't make that big of a generalization. In both cities, people seemed to keep to themselves. I will say that it seemed that Sydney had more of an overt tourist presence, and so seemed more open/friendly to tourism in that way. I will say that the public transportation is more easily accessible and the city is laid out in a convenient grid. However, I found it somewhat difficult to get around nonetheless with so many options-- trams, buses, trains, etc. Melbourne is definitely the home to many cultural ...

I started the 1200 km journey back towards Melbourne with intention of making it a two day journey taking in the well-known Great Ocean Road along the way.

Sadly, and as is often the way with these things, it didn't all quite happen as i'd planned when I left Adelaide. I managed to cover the distance up until about 50 kms before the G.O.R with a minimal amount of fuss, keeping a respectable speed and only stopping for petrol. Sadly, my idea of a 'respectable speed' seemed to be slightly different from the police man who proceeded to pull me over and give me a speeding ticket. My ...

In predictible Australian style there was a defining day when you could actually notice the change, going from the second hottest night in victorian record (night time temperature didn't drop below 25 and was already nudging thirty at half five in the morning) and a daytime high temperature of 35, to the next night where the temp dropped to around ten with a daytime high of 24.
So people.............

Today I started my job. I wouldn't normally think this was worthy
of writing an entire new blog about but it has been an eventufull day
to say the least.

I was picked up at about half six in the morning to start the hour
drive to work at Sticks Winery, which, if you're interested, is in the
Yarra Valley about an hour outside Melbourne.

Another hot day, although only going to be about thirty today so no
need for suncream (take it like a man!). Once at work my first
job was to clean out the hops in which they store the wine. Now,
you may think ...

It was a scorcher of a weekend, and our second last one in Melbourne so we decided to hire a car and set off to explore some of Victoria. After picking up our spanking new white Toyota with essential air con we hit the highway and headed for Ballarat. The main tourist draw there is a living musuem and gold museum. It was really good and much better than I expected. There were actors all dresssed up in the clothes of long ago, I felt like I was on the set of Dr. Quinn Medicine woman. There were cavalry displays and lots of quaint old fashioned shops. We went on a tour of a mine and also got to ...

As my time in Melbourne drew to a close I finished work, went on a tour of the Great Ocean Road and had some Christmas barbeques and final nights out. The Saturday before leaving I spent the day on a bus driving through the Great Ocean Road. Its a really windy steep drive with the most fabulous views of the ocean Ive ever seen. We stopped at some amazing beaches including Torquay the home of the famous Ripcurl and Billabong brands. We also visited the lighthouse made famous in that childhood tv show 'Around The Twist', whoever is around my age is bound to remember it. I met a girl on the tour ...

We went up after dark and got an excellent view of the city at night from the 88th floor. Its a bit of a sensory overload after the lift shoots you up, the walls are floor to ceiling glass, the floor uneven and slanted and neon signs display information about Melbourne and Melbourians across the floors and walls. Well worth it for the view and to help you get your bearings onthe city.

We picked 2 wineries to sample as there are many in a short region, De Bortolli offers cheaper wine and is slightly more commercial, Shantell is a boutique winery with exceptional wines. Both offer food, cheese tasting or homemade tasting platters and good quality wines. We had the advantage of a car so this was an inexpensive activity and we got to chat to the wine makers. However, if you are staying in the city and don't have your own transport then this could be a slightly pricy day trip tour.

Being only five feet tall, my friends would point out that I would feel small in most locations... however some places are a bit more special...

1. Giant Sequoias in Yosemite NP, California, USA

Yosemite National Park in California, USA is a stunning setting, with huge rock faces and endless waterfalls surrounding an almost perfectly flat valley floor. Further out from the main section of the park is an area of giant sequoias that tower to almost 80 metres high. The best area to see them is in Mariposa Grove where there’s a tree that you can walk through and is wide ...

The friendly staff at the Big4 were happy for us to leave the van on the slab whilst we headed into the City. The kids were very excited to catch the tram and enjoyed the 30 minute journey.

We headed straight off to Melbourne Central and Max Brenner’s, our most favourite hot chocolate emporium in the whole world! The kids enjoyed decadent baby chino’s and shared a waffle with white choc chips. While Gary had a plate of waffles covered in chocolate sauce. We each had a thick, rich, hot chocolate filled with mini-malteser equivalents through it …. Yum!!!

We waddled to Myers and did a ...

Either on foot, or by tram – I’ve walked so much in these new shoes I brought just before I left that they are already starting to come apart in places! Not really, but I don’t think it can really be helped if they do – I have been walking a lot recently.

Anyway, what did I do today… ah yes; the Old Melbourne Gaol (pronounced ‘jail’, for those who don’t know, which I doubt is any of you). That was… well, let me put it this way. You ever gone into a ...
