Today we navigated our way through London’s underground to visit the British Museum. It boasts an impressive collection of historical artifacts dating all
the way back to about 6000 BC. One day
in this museum is not nearly enough time to study all that it contains, but I
tried my best to take it all in. There
was a large collection of ancient Greek statues which, interestingly enough,
were replicas that the Romans had created from the original works. There also
was a large collection of pieces of ancient Greek and Roman architecture to
enjoy.

The museum
also contained a massive ...

Today, in my opinion,
was one of the most educational days of the trip so far. We visited the Glaxo Smith
Kline manufacturing facility in Ware, which is located in the English country
side. This is one of several GSK
manufacturing sites.

Our day started out quite early and after we became experts on the British rail
and tube system we arrived at our destination. Ware was a lot quieter than
London and not really the setting you would expect to find a manufacturing
facility that is making pharmaceuticals for over 130 countries and employing
about 1800 people.
The facility itself ...

Everyone slept in a little longer this morning since we did
not have to leave the hotel until 9 am
for King’s College. The pharmacy school was much closer than our previous
scheduled activities and we only had to take a short train ride to reach our
destination. We found out that London
still has a rush hour at 9 am!
The train we needed to take was so full that five students could not squeeze
in. Then only two of the remaining five students could fit on the next overcrowded
train. Even though our morning transit was hectic, we managed to regroup
without losing anyone and made it to ...

After a few full days spent learning about pharmacy practice
in the UK,
our schedule was rearranged a bit. We expected the weather to be nice here in London, well…at least not
raining. What would be best to do with such a day? Well, free day of course! As
we ventured out from our hotel we were met with brisk winds reminiscent of a
blustery South Dakota
day. Although the wind was cold, the rain stayed away.

Despite the mediocre weather, much of the group decided to

I woke up in the morning energized and full of energy to hike up the 800+/- steps to see the views over London from St Pauls. The church is magnificent and the amazing views were well worth it. After St Pauls I was off to find the train to Windsor.

As you arrive in Windsor you have some amazing views of the castle and town. You also realize just how big it all is as well. Stepping of the train you walk through a few shops and almost run straight into the huge Windsor Castle. The day was dreary and rainy and the Queen was at Windsor Castle so the royal apartments were closed to the ...

(London Heathrow airport, 1 pm, GMT)

We met our good friend, Davin, and our soon-to-be good friend, Trent, at the London Heathrow airport. From the airport, we took a bus to Paddington Station, which was a short walk from our Days Inn hotel. Upon check-in, we discovered that our hotel room was so tiny. Good thing that most of our time in London was spend exploring the city because we probably would've gone crazy being packed in like sardines!

We decided the best way to prevent jet lag (and minimize time stuffed in our hotel/closet) was to ...

This is a frequently lauded upscale eatery not far from South Kensington on Elystan Street. We took our well behaved 10-year-old along and the chef graciously accommodated her by assembling a broccoli rissoto. The menu is a fixed price experience; one side is a soup-to-nuts marathon, while the other is a bit lighter. The lesser fixed price a la carte menu was about $135 per person. Remember, this is London.

The formal staff moved about the rather intimate room like the cast in a well choreographed stage show. A lot of flair. We began with three spoons, each containing a yummy concoction. ...

The bus took about an hour and was pretty crowded at times. We got off in Trafalger Square with the skis clear and blue but the temperature a chilly 8 degrees. We walked through the sqaure and across to St James Park which was gorgeous in the autumn sunshine. Golden leaves covering the ground, tiny grey squirrals occasionally crossing our path and the pond bursting with bird ...

It's centrally located and literally right across from the British Museum. Finding it would be no problem for first time traveler to the city. The neighborhood is quiet and extremely charming.

My only quip was there was no

I met Nikki who was going home to London for a holiday however is now a permanent resident in Australia and resides in Exmouth (WA) working as a scuba dive instructor. She gave us some info about London and invited us to her parents place in southern England if we had time.

The flight was ok (13 hours and with only one hour sleep), and we arrived in London at 5am - cruised through immigration (no questions asked on visa entry!), out by 5.45, on the "tube" and ...

The British phrases are super cute. Here’s some of my newly acquired vocabulary:

Watch your step = Mind the step (also “mind the gap” when stepping off the Tube)

Rent = Let (for real estate), Hire (i.e. "bikes for hire")

Elevator = Lift

I’m sure you knew some of that already, but every time I see/hear them I smile. However, my luck wouldn't seem to continue that I had to wait for more than 6 hours for checking into my room. Nevermind, it just a ...

Oxford was truly beautiful, the whole town centre is made up of Oxford University, and it ...

Since I was staying at the Hilton London Euston hotel, Prezzo was in a good location for me. It's just down the block. Really close - I could walk there in like two minutes.

The location is pretty nice - it's not so crowded at anytime around this area. Every time my parents and I went in to eat there, we never had to wait - we got seats right away.

The service is pretty good. The waitresses would check up on us often to make sure we're okay. Not much to say about that.

I'm a person who loves cheese, so I made sure to order pastas with lots of cheese. I've been there a ...

in Heathrow. We were shuttled downstairs to a huge room with a long
line of newly arrived foreigners. I was so nervous and intimidated
that I couldn't remember what country I had just come from when they
asked me, and what country I was going to after England. ...

On Sunday morning (our last in London before leaving) we were looking for something to do and found that there was the largest Latin America festival in Europe (with 4000 people) happening in Elephant and Castle. So off we went to sample the fare and see the parades.

Then came the float parade with each country having a couple of floats - who knew there were so many Bolivians in London - each with their colourful costumes, loud music and dancing.

A great day out in the sun indeed and just what we needed to get into the swing of things before the trip!

Its a huge city, gritty in parts, but has definitely grown on Jessica and me once we had spent a few days here. Unlike the other big cities we have been to, its very flat - no huge skyscrapers. I'm not sure why, maybe some kind of building regulation?

Of course we have done the classic tourists spots, but we stayed out in the 'burbs with a friend of Jessica for 3 days so got a flavour of what it would be like living here.
