Finding our way out of Gyor was a challenge. Not only had the number of bikers on the "trail" seriously dwindled, so had all evidence of the trail. Needless to say, then, the families with baby trailers had hung up their hats in Vienna. We dove in with the few bikers we met to try and decipher the trail map to get outta Gyor. No easy task! But we managed and were rewarded with little traffic and interesting towns along our way.

I convinced Tole to take a shortcut off the trail map (we'd been convinced for some time that the route, which seemed wholly random in its off-river course, ...

Off to Hertz to collect our little skoda, and off roadtripping through the Hungarian countryside. Holloko is about an hour away, and is a little medieval viallage which has been restored in its exact state, so is a bit like a time warp...if it wasn't for all the tourists! :) It's famous for its Easter celebrations and I can see why. It was amazing - two days of dancing and singing ...

Budapest is one of the most beauitful cities I've ever been to. I was amazed when I was told that much of the city was actually bombed during WWII, in particular during the "Battle of Budapest" towards the end of the war, during which both the German and the Russian side wanted to defend the city at all costs...so much of the town is actually reconstructed. You'd never guess though. And part of the charm is that much of town is actually crumbling if not decaying. But although it gives it that romantic edge it is of course very sad to see the state of some of the buildings, it makes you want to ...

Smoooookin'...

...in many different ways! Number One: very literally. I have never been anywhere that is so full of smoke and smokers everywhere, even pre-ban. But especially post-ban the difference really hits you. It's amazing how quickly you forget just how minging it feels to wake up reeking like an ashtray! And people sitting in a restaurant smoking cigarettes and even cigars really takes some getting used to! But more importnantly, this city is smokin' HOT! ;) Lots and lots of fun. But it was scary! We were sitting in a resto with a friend of a friend who lives here (another Babs!!! I was very excited to meet her!) in a very cool place called Karma Cafe, which has a blacony and a second floor... We were sitting on the bottom floor chatting away, and all of a sudden a glass comes flying down from above and shatters right on our table! Out of the middle of nowehere!
I was at this hotel, and it was fantastic, it is a 18th century built castle with great rooms, fantastic restaurant, and beautiful spa, with great treatments. It is surrounded by a very pretty park. There are some pictures on the website www.szidonia.hu

we stayed in the castles, but it has some buildings surrounded where you can find cheaper rooms.

Overall, I felt great. For the equivalent of £2.50 I am tucking into a delicious meal of paprika chicken and pomme frites washed down with a firey Hungarian wine. But, by god, it feels good.

Ten hours before I was packing up to leave Vienna. My train did not leave until 2.00pm so I hauled my suitcase down to the Westbahnhof and left it in left-luggage. I have four hours to kill in Vienna and to be honest I am ready to leave. I ...

We got into Budapest after a five hour or so train ride from Vienna. We rode with our Aussie friends from the hostel so the ride went quick. We made plans to meet back up in Budapest that evening.

We arrived at our hostel known as the Budabase. The owner, Gabor, showed us to our room.
Arrived at Budapest train station early morn. What a painful city to navigate! Budapest is divided into two regions, on either side of the Danube, Buda and Pest.
I finally left Krakow and Poland for good this trip. All in all about 2 of my 4 months were spent in Poland, mostly because of having a good friend and girlfriend there...it became home-base. The big problem was that we never knew when it was going to be fixed-it was always next week...and then the next! After waiting patiently, and not so patiently for many weeks, I finally gave up ...

We chose this hotel after reading the fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor.com.

After check in (they served us some champagne as we filled in the paperwork), we settled in to room# 2309, an interior room with a view of the atrium. Needless to say, the rain stopped within 10 minutes and the temperature went up to 93 degrees. After ...

On Saturday, June 2 we were in Krakow taking in the 750th anniversary gala. I went to book our train tickets to Budapest and discovered that no sleeper berths were available Sunday night. The anniversary weekend had brought in alot of vistors for the weekend.

We quickly decided to book tickets for tht night to Budapest. There were no 4 sleeper compartments on this train. Just doubles and triples. The last openings were a double and two slots in a triple. (Our mystery passenger in the triple was a German university student.) We splurged on a hasty last meal of wild boar, pierogi ...

After a 7-1/2 hour ride in an 18-seater minibus, we made it to Budapest! There were 16 passengers in the bus: 11 being Dianna, her parents, her brother, Asta, Natalee, Emily, Wesley (Emily's friend), Lana, Meghan, and me. We went through Slovakia to get there. I was asleep for most of the ride, but I remember mountains in Slovakia.

We had to stop twice to check passports. When we were leaving Poland/entering Slovakia, a woman got on the bus to check passports. She was very careful about it, pretty much questioning everyone. She looked at me, then my passport, then back at me and ...

Yesterday afternoon we took a bus from Krakow to Budapest. My parents and brother (Brent) came into a town about a week ago and are traveling with me. The bus left at 3 in the afternoon and it was a 7-hour ride. The route was windy though Slovakia and we got to admire the Polish countryside and mountainous areas. When we arrived in Budapest the bus station was closed and it was tricky to find a taxi. Our hotel was what seemed like very far outside the city in the dark but in the morning we figured out that actually we were very close to everything. Hotel Anna was a nice change from all the ...
