I stayed the first half of my trip in Wan Chai. Wan Chai is sort of like the 'red light' district in Amsterdam - of course w/o the red lights and girls behind windows. Bars open crazy late and girly bars if you want to go. Chinese food shops with ...

This was just the polite people- there were at least a dozen taking sneak ...

Hong Kong has always had a special place in our hearts. Denise grew up there as a child, returning to UK when she was 9 years old. After our marriage we lived there from 1980 to 82 and Denise returned for a visit in 1996, the year before the Colony was handed back to the Chinese Government. Hong Kong island and one mile of the Kowloon peninsula was ceded to the British Government in perpertuity as a result of the opium wars. A large section of mainland China was also leased to the British for 99 years (this was known as the New territories). It was eventually agreed that at the end of ...

Here goes...

I arrived in Hong Kong to be greeted by Steph's mom, Theresa, at the airport. From there we bused to Steph's aunts and uncles apartment in Discovery Bay, which is a very serene place about a half hour ferry ride out of Hong Kong.

My first day in Hong Kong, Steph, Theresa (Steph's mom) and I went to Ocean Park, which is a kitschy theme park / zoo / garden (I can't quite figure out which one prevails). ...

Where Vietnam was a land of motorcycles, Hong Kong was a flood of people. Emma had been to Hong Kong 15 years ago and rattled off stories of excessive filth and unhygienic people. However 15 years is a long time and as we left the ultra hi-tech airport and headed into Kowloon we felt reasonably comfortable that Hong Kong was a clean and user friendly city.

The immediate visual impact of all the development was awesome. Hong Kong has a relatively small and mountainous environment but the way they pack in high rise after high rise was hard to fathom. Our first hotel was in one of the less ...

Hong Kong was a much anticipated trip for us; we were very excited about visiting the city that both of us have wanted to visit for a long time. To get to Hong Kong from Guangzhou, we decided on taking a three hour bus journey. We used a bus company affiliated with the grand China Hotel in Guangzhou and the service and buses were of high quality, making the journey very pleasant.

Upon arrival at the China border crossing in Shenzhen, we disembarked the bus to go through customs. The place was insane and mayhem was all around us as we were herded to the immigration desks. Several bus ...

With service running every 15 - 20 minutes, this is the best way to go from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon in the best time with it generally taking about 7 minutes to traverse Victoria Bay.

It is also one of the best deals in all of Hong Kong, with a cost of 2.2 HK$ (about .35 US$) for a seat on the upper deck. We did not take advantage of any of their harbor tours but imagine that would also be a great deal. We especially found this convenient as we were staying at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel next to the Convention Center (the Grand Hyatt is also right there also).

The hotel is located next to the Convention Center (& the Golden Bauhinia) and is about four minutes walk to the Wan Chai piers (especially great for catching the Star Ferry to Kowloon).

The service is great.. we got a lot of help from the concierge!!!

Breakfast buffet is very acceptable.... lots of choice including an omlette station.... and a nice view of the harbour (but only for a while as there is constuction on an add-on on the Convention Center next door that will take the view from the restaurant). Though ...

I shall have it again when I see it next time... We arrived at the Hong Kong airport in early afternoon and hired a taxi to take us to our hotel, Renaissance Harbor View Hotel on Hong Kong Island. The taxi ride cost 374 HK$ (about 50 US$). We saw several giant skyscrapers ( over 40 floors!)

as we were leaving the airport & Gary ...

We were also used to being the only foreigners amongst masses of Chinese citizens who found us to be quite the attraction. However, 1 ½ hours flight time away from Heng Yang and we were suddenly in Hong Kong – ...

There was only really one place left that i wanted to see and that was Stanley and Repulse Bay on the other side of HK Island so jumped on the bus (gettin bloody good at this public transport lark) and headed for Stanley. Took about 30 mins on the bus. The road to Stanly was very ...

No sleepin in for me this morning as i was meeting Amanda in Kowloon at 10am. We went to a local restaurant which was a very similar set up to the previous night (very big very busy - like a canteen - and very bright tacky decor!) for Dim Sum.
