Please forgive us.

Hoi An was absolutely lovely. We'd heard about it months ago from a girl on a bus in Thailand who said this was THE place to get clothes tailor made. This message was repeated by almost every traveller we passed in the opposite direction since then. We expected to perhaps maybe think about buying some clothes. We did not expect to end up with the 10 items we now own. What unemployed people do you know who need 3-piece suits? How about extra sports ...

Our first walk around the city and we knew Hoi An was a town capitalizing on the tailoring. On every block there was at least one tailor, usually four or five. We were originally going to have only one dress (for me) and one suit (for Matt) made. But three days later we had two suits (one each), two dresses (for me), three shirts, three ties, two pairs of pants, a bathing suit and $300 visa bill. Warning to people planning on going to Hoi An: the ...

OK, looks like I'm falling down on the blog job a bit lately, so I'll do two quick ones to catch up... We didn't have a ton of time in Hoi An- just a day and a half really, so Laura and I took the town on in true type-A form... we actually ran around independently since we both had slightly different agendas. The first day I roamed around shopping and taking a few shots, then went for a little sunset canoe ride with a nice old man (see photo)... he was probably in his early 70's or so and took me for a nice relaxing paddle around the river and down to the Japanese bridge (see photo), Hoi An's ...

Hoi An is a small coastal town in Vietnam known for its shopping and made to order tailored clothing. You can walk down almost any one of the lanes in town and find a tailor ready to measure you out for a cashmere suit or jacket!
Greenfield Hotel in Hoi An was meant to be a luxury expense for us, as we splurged and paid $25 (around ₤14) for a room. When we looked at photos online, the hotel seemed very nice and appealing, and there was even a swimming pool. The write-up on Hostelworld’s website said that the room amenities included breakfast and a DVD player along with all other amenities, but when we checked in we were very disappointed in the place.

There was no DVD player in the room; instead, guests had to pay to rent a player.
We had wanted to take a train from Nha Trang to Hoi An, but due to it being a Vietnamese holiday we were stuck on an overnight bus. It is a cute little town on the coast, saved from bombing during ...

The Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival stretches on and on in that accommodation and bus prices skyrocket at this time, and the longer this goes on, the better for businesses! We found a very comfy hotel room in Mui Ne for US$20/night and had 2 nights there. Didn't see too much of the famous sand-dunes though as we decided to knuckle down and sort out details for the rest of our ...

Kevin and I ended up in a really nice bus, leaving at an absurd hour from Hue to Hoi An. It was worth it, though, because the bus stopped at Lang Co Beach and then Marble Mountain, outside of Danang. We had 45 minutes to explore Marble Mountain, so it was a whirlwind of sights (and gigantic flights of stairs) and little time to do it. Would we make it back on the bus or would it leave without us, that was the question.

Marble Mountain is a natural wonder. Very beautiful. It's these large cliffs made of marble smack dab in the middle of the city. People sell marble sculptures all around ...

Hoi An...(which is not to be confused with Hanoi)...was a nice city for some down time. As if our trip is so strenuous! Again, this place was highly influenced by the French. We arrived at 3 pm and spent the first day lounging at the hotel pool. That night we went to a Tet carnival. There were lots of games we didn't understand. I just gave them money and they gave me darts to throw at a big bulletin board. The prizes were quite interesting. Forget stuffed animals, it was all about beer, candy, cookies, and pots/pans. Beer for the men, candy/cookies for the kids, and i assume pots/pans for ...

Jan 28/07

Another early morning arrival, and back to sleep at the hotel. The train last night was not as nice as the first one and the previous visitors in our cabin had been eating durian. For those of you who have not had the "pleasure" of smelling durian, count yourselves lucky. It's an asian fruit, adored by the East, and banned in many Western hotels, due to the horrid smell. Think skunk and wolf willow bark. It's nasty stuff, and the smell would not go away all night. (Thanks Jenna, for you peppermint drops, they were a great help).

After we got up, we went for a walk around ...

I was walking along a street and I saw this great looking suede jacket. I couldn't help asking the price - $25.00. Well, I found it hard to pass that up. And of course the very persuasive salesgirl told me she could make me trousers for $13.00 and shirts for $8.00. So of course I said okay. When I returned this morning I tried on the trousers and they fit perfectly, no alterations of any kind required, same for the shirts. This lead me to ask, "How much for a suit?" $42.00. What? $42.00, $55.00 if you want two pair of pants. I was shocked, especially sinced I had already paid $350 for two ...

After a short, uneventful flight, we landed at Da Nang airport, which used to be a US military base. The promised cab was there to meet us and we set off to Hoi An, about 15 minutes away by car. Da Nang is notorious for being the scene, during the Vietnam War, of groups of South Vietnamese army units fighting each other to secure places on the two flights sent to pick up people fleeing from the advancing Viet Cong forces. One of the planes was forcibly occupied by a company of South Vietnamese troops and had only 3 civilians on board, two women and a baby. The baby was only there after ...

My credit card arrived after an entire week. Just what I was told in the first place but refused to believe. I have a flight this afternoon to Ho Chi Minh City which is just as often called Saigon. My final day here began as they all have with a very pleasant breakfast at the hotel overlooking about 3 acres of wetland with egrets and sometimes cows in the back pasture. Nam Do (I still don't actually know what to call him) picked me up and we went to visit Mrs. Lan. Really Lan is her first name. We had a bite there and arranged to meet later. I then had Do take me to the beach. It was ...

Yesterday if I can remember yesterday was shopping day for my Vietnamese boyfriend. I got the western union infusion of cash and Do picked me up for our lunch date with Mrs. Lan. We spent some time with her. Then I went down the street and got a haircut and a shave from her son. He was so precise and attentive to detail. He asked for 30,000 Dong> I paid him 50,000 which comes out to be about $3.75. Mrs Lan invited us tonight for dinner. We then stopped at the market where I bought him a shirt, pants, hat, sunglasses and sandals all came to around $25. I got myself two t-shirts, ...

I remain in Hoi An running out of money as my card remains somewhere in transit and Kurt is sending me money by Western Union but is so busy he has not been able to get to an office. Luckily I can still afford to eat as food is quite cheap here.

Yesterday I took a bus to My Son ( me son). It is an ancient ruin from the time of Hindu influence in coastal Vietnam. The people are called Champa and they still exist as a small minority here. The site is small and much of it was bombed in the war. Unesco is again funding restoration. The structures are all brick and very worn by time and ...

I really don't know what the day will bring when I wake up here. My only notion for the day was to talk to Kurt on the phone and go to the beach. As long as I don't have to pay the hotel bill. I took up the offer of a motorbike driver to take me to the Marble mountains today. It is about 35 km from Hoi An. Cost me about $3.50 to be taken and returned. And once again he threw in a couple of extra stops just to make it worth my while. The Marble ...

Consequently I awoke with a bit of a hangover. A little yoga and some breakfast here at the hotel (included in the $25 price)set me to rights. The crew were all full of stories involving buying tailor made clothes. This town is agog with shops where for as little as 15 bucks you can get a fitted dress and the same for a shirt.
Hey there,

Well I just wanted to put some pictures up that didn't make it last time. We spent 3 days in Hoi An, which is a crazy city. As Ryan put it so eloquently "It's a womans heaven and a mans nightmare". There are over 200 tailor shops in the small city of Hoi An, and let me tell you, Koren and I did some major damage to the bank accounts. Between the two of us, we came out with 4 jackets, 3 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of shoes, a pair of boots, 2 dresses, 2 pairs of silk PJs and a new duffle bag. We decided the jackets are a necessity since it is only 1 degree in Beijing right now.
