The day before had been our only day when we stayed outside the ocean all day. We had made reservations for this ATV ride in the western mountains of Hawaii. As the security brief said, it was a guided tour, not a thrill ride. We tried our best to add some thrill to the rocky and bouncy track where we drive our Yamaha Rhinos.</p><p>It required a 9 am start from home to make it to the starting point at 10:30. We took off from Fiji at 10:50pm on Sunday the 25th and woke up in the air over Hawaii at 6:45am on Sunday, the 25th. Yeah, you can see how we got confused when we booked it! Anyway, we watched the sun rise from the plane, and at 7:15 we descended into Honolulu and cleared customs with only a small snag (Gretchen was selected for further screening – I mean, she is intimidating, so…). Most boat rides to the dive sites are 20 minutes or less and there are many sites accessible by shore. This included scrambled eggs, sausages, pineapple, hashbrown, blueberry muffin and a sales pitch of tours to do in Hawaii (whch was entertaining and informative). They just happened to have the tour agents on hand for you to book your tours. After that we were off on the "free" shuttle to the Maui Divers Jewellery Factory where we got to see a short film on the harvesting of rare coral, then the design and manufacture of jewellery using the rare black, pink and gold coral. I found it almost impossible to sleep given we did not have the Qantas Skybeds I was anticipating in business class. We had a fairly smooth trasition through arrivals (given we couldn't find my luggage as the bright pink identifying strap on my bag went missing). We got through immigration and customs quickly then waited for our hotel transfer. It's a cruise on a big catamaran that serves dinner and has a luau onboard. Once onboard, you are allowed to get drinks. I don't remember all the options, but we stuck with the Mai Tais. After the catamaran launches, the crew starts performing. They put on a little show and get the audience involved. They usually chose men to dress them in hula attire. Dinner is served to your table. The tables are in the middle of the catamaran that can hold up to 15 people or so. The 60 some acres are filled with green tropical gardens, hammocks, and a walking path along the water's edge. The walking path is lit with tiki torches at sunset every night. Because the size of the property, there is also a little boat ride or tram available to take you to different spots.</p><p>Our hotel room was an ocean view room, which was really nice. We enjoyed the little chocolates and fresh flowers placed on our bed each day after the rooms were cleaned. It's called "the aquarium" or "the fish bowl." She gave us a little bit of directions and we headed out to find the place.</p><p>You drive South past Kihei and Wailea. You'll drive past a reserve where people snorkel (and the attendant doesn't like to give you directions to the secret place) and go through a huge lava field. You keep going until the road ends and you'll see cars parked on the side of the road. The road consists of 50 some miles of sharp curves and one lane bridges. We thought having someone else drive would allow both of us to enjoy the scenery instead of focusing on the road.</p><p>The company we went with was very good and we highly recommend them. Our driver was very nice and informative. He talked almost nonstop from the time he picked us up from the hotel to when he dropped us off. They pick you up, take you to a place to get some juice, coffee, and pastries. Once in Hana, you stop to eat a provided chicken plate lunch. It's a cresent shaped island off Maui's southwest side.</p><p>We decided on Maui Magic as our catamaran after having several options. We got on the boat at 8 am and they had coffee, juice, and pastries for us. We pulled out of the harbor and headed south to find some spinner dolphins. It was very cold and windy at the top, but it was a neat experience to see the sun rising above a Volcano crater.</p><p>The bike down was ok. You are in a group of 8-10 people and ride down single file. They put the lighter people in the front, therefore, those in the back tend to brake down most of the way. You are also wearing a helmet and can't really look around at the scenery very well. We were on our honeymoon, so we wanted some place special.</p><p>The restaurant has free valet parking. You have to make reservations in advance to reserve a table on the rail to get a good view of the sunset (5:30pm in November was our reservation). It's an open air restaurant, so you can view the sunset and feel the breeze while eating. These condos are both owner-occupied and time shares. Our unit was an ocean view. They have an informal information session every morning and serve juice, coffee and pastries. We were looking for a hike to a waterfall, but didn't want to go far from where we were staying. It's a little place on the side of the road where you order at the window and sit outside under the awning. They bring your order out to you when it's ready. I had the spaghetti and meatballs and Mike had pizza (I don't remember what kind). It was some of the best spaghetti I'd every had. It was beautiful, and a great day to be under the sun (especially since Michael and I lost most of our tan over the year). The highlight of this expedition wasfollowing a giant turtle around (it was about half my size and we were so close we could touch him if we dare venture).
