So here I am again swapping an official workstation for one in an 'interesting' Internet cafe. More about the constant comings and goings of this particular location another time perhaps but last time I was hear I felt at times like London zoos latest arrival the amount of stares I got from certain people. Then on top of that there is the blaring radio of the ancient transistor variety. Lucky I was engrossed in my typing and I hope you enjoyed the result.

So after I signed off eight days ago I ended up eating somewhere entirely different to the place I intended.
Burkina Faso is a pretty small country and we didn't get to see a lot
of it. We headed south from Ouaga through some national park (didn't
see any wildlife except the usual ant and mossies) to the Ghana border.
Again this was a quick crossing. Initially the border guys wanted to
see us individually with our passports, but when 23 of us showed up
outside his rather cramped office, he changed his mind! For those
following on maps, the nearest big town is Bolga something.

Ghana
again appeared different from BF pretty quickly. More trees, friendlier
people, the kids would jump up and ...

Great! Its wonderful to stay with a Brit and her Ghanian Husband--it make processing the experience so helpful. Also, she has started her own NGO so she has all these connections wtih schools in Accra, with a village in Ghana, etc. She is going to get me into a school to see it, even though I just met her and made no prior plans! Also, she said she can get me into the village her and her husband are doing work in! Exciting!

I safely made it to Ghana. I met a Catholic father on the plane and he invited me to see him in Kumasi, a town I am planning on seeing later. Also, I met some people on the plane and we hung out today, and we'll likely hang out tomorrow. Sorry I can't call you yet...when I can, I will. Perhaps this Friday? No promises though...

Ghana is entirely different than anything I had in my mind. I couldn't picture the complete isolation from the west...while Ghana has western influences, it is entirely different...the slums are everywhere and interspersed between the gated, rather nice homes. After finally finding out what they served (Empero is generally good with communicating but he had a hard time with this...the women behind the counter was much more helpful) I had some rice mixed with spaghetti noodles flavored with something. They also served something they called meat--I'd call it chared nastiness. I'm generally adventuresome but I didn't even dare eat this. The pieces were about an inch round and 1.5 inch long and black. Ugh. ...

Today, I woke up and went to the market near my house and then headed into town I saw the parts of Accra that are more developed (the offices of the ministires in Ghana...they have 88 ministers! by comparison, America has a cabinet of 12)--which made me feel more sane. I was mentally expecting to stay in rural areas and sleep under bug nets and be surrounded by the africa of pictures--I was not mentally prepared for Accra, a city center which is predominately poor and has slums left and right. it is busy, dirty, and crowded. Seeing the developed areas made me feel like indeed, this was a city ...

The locals are very friendly and from my experience I would say Ghana is pretty much a safe place to visit in Africa. The Hotels are nice and decent and the food is good. One thing to watch out for is the water and raw fruits and vegetables.

There is a lot to do in Accra, however I only had the chance to visit the The Black Star Square which is the venue for many national celebrations. There is a "war memorial" in the Square dedicated to "the unknown soldier" and there is also the "Independence Arch", built to commemorate Ghana's Independence from the British in 1957.Another monument ...

Saturday 3rd February 2007 (Day 22)--------------------- -------------------OK - the beginning of my final week. I can't believe it has gone so fast.

Power cut made the night hellish. I have never really rated those battery operated, hand-held fans until now. It was not a great nights sleep, but without one of those to cool me down whenever I woke up I think I would have had about 10 minutes sleep all night.

Today we went to the Domana Rock Shrine, so we got up early (great after a crap nights sleep) and headed out. The journey there was quite quick until we got to the dirt ...

It was the perfect way to wind down after the week I had.

EEEEKKKK - Just going to bed and there is a spider the size of my hand in the hallway - and boy can it move. I will be helping Aggie ...

Hi everyone - sorry again for the long wait between updates. The internet has not been working very often and we have been too busy to keep coming to Akatsi to check it! But we are both doing well - our placements have ups and downs but this week has been a good one so far . We are staying healthy too - knock on wood! And the weather has been really cool (maybe 25*C) and overcast with periods of rain each day, which is better than continuous heat I guess, but it's definitely not what we expected!

Last weekend we spent two nights in the town of Hohoe (Ho-way), in the northern part of the ...

Tamale journal: the best part of the stay, everyone should take this 2-3hr guided walk around the water holes where you can get really close to elephants, baboons, and other animals right in their own environment. it costs a fee of about 25000 cedi and is well worth it

Tamale journal: Overlooking a busy waterhole in Mole National Park, you can watch elephants, antelope, and baboons from your room. And there are rooms of all types available, from dorms to chalets with A/C. We had a big, self-contained double room with fan for about 180,000 cedi, a reasonable price if you consider how great the location is (although its pricey for Ghana, this motel has more than most hotels in the country, like a pool and of course the animals).

After my time with United Planet was up I went east to Koforidua to live with a family for almost a week. They had 5 kids between ages 19 and 12. Which was great because the older 2 would take me out to explore the town and the market. It is a lot smaller then Accra but still very very busy. The market seems squashed because the aisles are so small and peoples stores spill out into them giving you even less room to walk. Women pass by with an ease despite carrrying large baskets on their heads and babies on their backs. It's really quite the atmosphere. Everyone yells at you, not always in ...

Hello Friends!

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written. With the combination of being busy with classwork (many papers, weaving kente, and readings) and the internet being ridiculously slow, it’s been hard to update. So, I’ll give a quick run through of the past week and a half and I’m sure I won’t do justice to most of my experiences, especially my homestay this past weekend.

First, Easter weekend. Good Friday, as I wrote about before, was an interesting day followed by a wonderful evening. We went to our friend Tony’s campus radio show (which is broadcast all over the Ashanti ...

Arrival at the Accra International Airport was something of an adventure in itself already. We arrived a few hours after sunset in the capital city and, unlike the airport adventures in Philadelphia or London, we were shuffled off of the plane and walked across the airport lot instead of through a terminal. The immediate wall of humidity hit like a ton of bricks right after exiting the cool air conditioning of the airplane. I realized then that I would have to be getting used to the hot conditions. The airport itself was an exercise in patience and ingenuity. Although the staff was ...

We don't have time to write much, but we uploaded photos of last weekend's trip to Cape Coast. We toured a slave fort, which was a powerful experience, walked the beach and streets of the city, went for dinner at a great local cafe that was recommended by a local who had lived in Montreal for a few years, and on Sunday we did the famous canopy walk in Kakum National Forest! Enjoy the photos.

Sorry it's been two weeks since our last update - it has been busy and the town where we are now doing our volunteer placements (Abor) doesn't have an internet cafe, so we have had to wait until we get a chance to come back into Akatsi.

Starting last Monday, July 3, we began our placements that will continue for the next 4 weeks - Kendra working and teaching at the orphanage called In My Father's House and Ryan at Sacred Heart Hospital in Abor. We are staying in a room at the orphanage and Ryan walks or gets a ride to the hospital each morning. To make things easy we are just going to ...

I arrived in Accra after a day and a half of travel!! It was so exhausting. Right now I'm staying at an oceanfront guesthouse (sounds way nicer then it is) and volunteering at a school an hour away. We have been trying all sorts of Ghanaian dishes such as RedRed, Jollof Rice, Watchi (i have no idea how you spell that) and they are all really spicy but good. I am supposed to be with a United Planet group that holds cultural evenings and does lots of activities.. .unfortunately there are only 2 other people here (luckily my age and very fun) and we don't really do much. We are going to the bead ...
