a entry by Tole & Jessica
from a trip to Freiburg, Germany.

Our ride started out well, with a morning of climbing through the beautiful Black Forest in Germany. Our goal was to reach Donaueschingen, the source of the mighty Danube (Donau in German). See the photos for a view of the Danube's rather comically inauspicious start in downtown Donaueschingen. The river continues from there for 2845 kilometers to finally empty into the Black Sea in Romania, near the Ukrainian border. We started thinking, hmmm, the Black Forest to the Black Sea could be a pretty cool way to go.

The Danube Bike trail itself is definitely easy riding as far as cycle ...

Arrived very tired after longest bus trip yet, 10 hours from Amsterdam. So had a quick walk around the shops and restaurants within a block of the hostel and crashed out for the night.

Next day the weather was beautiful for the first time on the trip so we made the most of it by going on a six hour Bike Tour around Berlin. Stopped at Museum Island, the remaining section of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, the recently completed Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag. The guide was a fellow kiwi from Christchurch and was brilliant at his job, having studied German history at ...

Hi all, sorry its been so long. I have been having too much fun in Germany! We were met at Regensburg train station by my good friend & German sister Isabel (who was an aupair in Sydney 6 years ago), also her aunt & uncle, Christa & Joseph. We were taken to a Greek temple high on a hill overlooking the Danube river! The temple was similar to the Parthenon in Athens. The view was stunning! We then headed to a German pub & I tasted my first dark german beer. Germans drink there beer quickly & I stuggled to keep up! We settled in nicely at Christa's beautiful home 45mins outside of the ...

So in February (it seems like ages ago), my roommate Taylor and our friends Pete and Matt and I embarked on a weekend excursion to Munich (Műnchen) in Bavaria. Before this trip, if you would have asked me if I could ever go on a 3 day trip and only pack a bookbag, I would have said, “Most definitely not!” However, I supposed I underestimated myself before because after this trip, I’m pretty confident I can do almost any three day trip in the future living out of a bookbag with no problem J.
We took a 48 hour trip to Germany. It was a last minute trip and we didn't really have much of a plan - which I've discovered can make for a really fun holiday. We got a cheap Ryan Air flight from Stansted to Frankfurt Hahn Airport early Saturday morning and returned late Sunday night. The airport, although it says Frankfurt in the name, is actually 2 and a half hours outside of Frankfurt and situated in the wine region.

Instead of seeing a boring city, we decided to rent a car and see as much as possible. On Saturday we drove up the Mosel River to Koblenz, spent the night in Koblenz ...

I've taken overnight trains through Europe before. Well, only traversing Italy. My first, from Rome to Venice, was terrible. I went in a berth, and was subsequently waked by the conductor every hour or so. We arrived in Venice at 6 a.m. In March. It was freezing. None of the shops or cafes were open yet. I was cranky, and that probably colored my perception of Venice as stinky, frigid, and no fun.

My overnight trains to and from Sicily were much, much better. Not only did I get the sleeping berth, but my berth mates chatted me up and fed me, gave me some vino, bought me breakfast, and ...

First i have to say that Fastnacht in Mullheim, a small town about 20 minute train ride outside of Freiburg, was perhaps one of the craziest experiences of my life. I can't even imagine what actual Carnival is like in Cologne, where it is said to be as big as it is in Rio de Janeiro with 400,000 participants, 440 horses, 90 floats and 129 orchestras. Here's a little bit of the history of Fastnacht in Mullheim:

_________________________ _______________________

The “Alemannische Fasnacht”, carnival in Müllheim, is a colourful and lively event, presenting a great variety of costumes. ...

There is no getting around it: I will be eating meat on this trip. I know, I know...my frizzy hair and joie de vivre smack of a card-carrying member of PETA, but I have been known to gnaw a beefstick in my day.
By the time you read this, I'll be home.

We had a few little adventures the last day, driving slowly north from our houseboat haven toward the Cochin airport. We went to a coconut-fiber weaving factory, caught another elephant festival, and splashed a bit in the clear, warm Arabian Sea. And continued creeping North.

Our 9pm flight to Bangalore was only 45 minutes late (that's "on-time" in Hindi, Urdu, Malayalom, and other major languages we encountered in India). We then had four-and-a-half hours to kill before boarding our 3:20am (that's right) flight to the West. We were once ...

We got into Berlin and checked into the Circus hostel. The hostel was great and centrally located. Berlin turned out to be one of the great surprises of our trip. The people were all so welcoming and knowledgable. You could tell that at one point these people had been repressed and that ...

After our whirlwind escapade to get onto the train headed for Munich, we got a taste of what Oktoberfest was going to be like. About an hour outside of Munich, the train filled up with men, women, and children all dressed up in traditional German attire: lederhosen. The train was so packed that it was standing room only. Turns out we were actually staying just ...

Greetings from Munich!

Our weather this whole trip has been absolutely beautiful! The last two days especially. (of course they are predicting snow on Friday!)

Mad Ludwig was “mad”, but he was a genius prankster! The Hellbrun Waterworks in Salzburg were amazing. He thought of everything to sober up his drunken guests with shoots of water coming from everywhere.

We then drove down from Munich to visit the Dachau Concentration Camp and Memorial site. It was a reflective time. Our Munich hotel is ½ block from the Munich October festival grounds. (good thing Oct. fest is over!) ...

We arrived late, compared to the hardcores, at about midday. The festival itself is held in the heart of Munchen (Munich to non Germans) and lasts for 15 days. Its free to enter, beers are large (1L), expensive and difficult to get sometimes. Chrsitian, his brother Alex and his girlfriend took us in there, those 3 dressed the part in traditional Bayern dress, and the tourists very much standing out. The early comers fill the beer tents and ...

It was absolutely huge....rollarcoasters, beer tents, food ...

Tübingen is a traditional university town about 30 km away from Stuttgart. Its small, but has the Neckar river running right through the center of town, where you can take rides on these Gondola like boats. This town dates from the 6th or 7th century, and has lots of very pretty architecture.

I live in my Studentenwonheim (dorms) on top of the hill that overlooks the citx known as the WHO (Waldhäuser Ost). We decided to ...
