Today we navigated our way through London’s underground to visit the British Museum. It boasts an impressive collection of historical artifacts dating all
the way back to about 6000 BC. One day
in this museum is not nearly enough time to study all that it contains, but I
tried my best to take it all in. There
was a large collection of ancient Greek statues which, interestingly enough,
were replicas that the Romans had created from the original works. There also
was a large collection of pieces of ancient Greek and Roman architecture to
enjoy.

The museum
also contained a massive ...

Today, in my opinion,
was one of the most educational days of the trip so far. We visited the Glaxo Smith
Kline manufacturing facility in Ware, which is located in the English country
side. This is one of several GSK
manufacturing sites.

Our day started out quite early and after we became experts on the British rail
and tube system we arrived at our destination. Ware was a lot quieter than
London and not really the setting you would expect to find a manufacturing
facility that is making pharmaceuticals for over 130 countries and employing
about 1800 people.
The facility itself ...

Everyone slept in a little longer this morning since we did
not have to leave the hotel until 9 am
for King’s College. The pharmacy school was much closer than our previous
scheduled activities and we only had to take a short train ride to reach our
destination. We found out that London
still has a rush hour at 9 am!
The train we needed to take was so full that five students could not squeeze
in. Then only two of the remaining five students could fit on the next overcrowded
train. Even though our morning transit was hectic, we managed to regroup
without losing anyone and made it to ...

Today was yet another fast-paced, activity-packed day in London. The day was beautiful, partly cloudy with
temps in the upper 50’s. Leaving our
hotel at 7:15 this
morning, we then traveled another two hours on the Tube and the train to arrive
in Huntingdon, where Huntingdon Animal Life Sciences is located. After arriving in Huntingdon we were met with
several very official-looking employees of Huntingdon who drove us to the
facility. For many of us, this was our
first time riding inside a European car, and it was very interesting! Some of
us (ahem) tried to hop into the drivers’ side, ...

our schedule was rearranged a bit. We expected the weather to be nice here in London, well…at least not

Today’s weather looks really good and Dad is keen to go out and do something. He has decided that Mum and I should go bird watching and is making plans to take us to a spit of land near Hull because it has a nature reserve on it. I eventually persuade him that this isn’t a great idea as clearly it is very remote, not ideal for Mum who really needs to go somewhere more accessible. In the end they decide to take me up to Bampton Cliffs again where they will drop me off. Then my parents will go off and visit nearby Bridlington as Mum doesn’t really want to go.

Today’s visit is very ...

Ever since my brother and I visited Bolton Abbey last week I’ve been raving about it to my parents. Finally they’ve decided they want to see it before we leave. I’m delighted as I really enjoyed it last time and think mum in particular will enjoy the easy lower walk beside the river.

We arrive, after a few false turns, at the vast car park cum picnic area down by the river. It isn’t quite as busy today so we find a nice spot and start setting out the picnic. Then Dad decides to go in search of a loo – taking the car with him. It was probably half an hour before he finally returned – he ...

(London Heathrow airport, 1 pm, GMT)

We met our good friend, Davin, and our soon-to-be good friend, Trent, at the London Heathrow airport. From the airport, we took a bus to Paddington Station, which was a short walk from our Days Inn hotel. Upon check-in, we discovered that our hotel room was so tiny. Good thing that most of our time in London was spend exploring the city because we probably would've gone crazy being packed in like sardines!

We decided the best way to prevent jet lag (and minimize time stuffed in our hotel/closet) was to ...

This is a frequently lauded upscale eatery not far from South Kensington on Elystan Street. We took our well behaved 10-year-old along and the chef graciously accommodated her by assembling a broccoli rissoto. Remember, this is London.

The formal staff moved about the rather intimate room like the cast in a well choreographed stage show. A lot of flair. We began with three spoons, each containing a yummy concoction. ...

As it’s still quite early I decide to head back into York for a few hours. The weather has really brightened up and the sun is putting in its first appearance for a few days. When I arrive, the first thing I do is go down to the river to see how all the rain in the last few days has affected the Ouse. The answer is badly. It’s immediately apparent that it’s a hell of a lot higher than yesterday. As I follow it along into the centre of town, I’m greeted by the sight of flood barriers and the kind of thing you see on news coverage.

One particular stretch of road that sits low alongside the ...

Everyone headed off in different directions today. I headed back into York to make the most of my weekly bus ticket. So far I’ve paid £7 out but had £12 worth of trips! My main objective today is to find a suitable birthday present (on Saturday) for my brother. This means taking a look around the shops and poses a slight problem for me. I’ve begun to suspect that the streets within York’s walls are actually magical and frequently rearrange themselves like the rooms and corridors of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books. Even with a map I find it impossible to get to the same place twice and ...

They are not kidding. Getting to Brimham Rocks takes us through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales again, but I really wasn’t prepared for the incredible sight that met us. All around us were fantastical shapes and forms created from enormous boulders, these had been deposited here hundreds of thousands of years ago by retreating glaciers. They stood in huge piles forming all kinds of strange shapes, a gorilla, a turtle and an eagle, etc.

Our first priority is to find a suitable place for a picnic. This we find next to the car park of course! As it’s probably our first full family trip out, ...

Sometimes on a wet rainy day you just have to find alternative methods of keeping yourself entertained. I know this isn’t terribly exciting for anyone reading this, but I don’t want you to think you’re missing out!

I did eventually do some proper holiday stuff when I finally made it back to the city (they have an out of town multiplex). By late afternoon the rain had subsided and I thought I should make the most of it by walking the city walls.

I start off at Bootham Bar (all the gates are known as Bars) ...

Well it didn’t look all that promising this morning. It was grey and overcast but warm, so ideal really for a walk. My brother had decided to head off to the Yorkshire Dales, a beautiful part of the county made famous by television programmes like All Creatures Great and Small and Last of the Summer Wine.
Sat Jan 12, 2008 - Went on a day trip to York, a 30-minute train ride from Leeds. It was rainy in the morning (this rain is getting to be an awful bore) but it brightened up considerably as the day progressed.

First we went to the Railway Museum with the Yorkshire Wheel. Admission is free to museum but the Yorkshire Wheel ride costs £6. The best part of the museum was the Great Hall with the old trains and their furnishings and the stories told about the carriages on an overhead speaker. http://www.nrm.org.uk /home/home.asp

Lunch at a fish-and-chips place, ate sickly-green mushy ...

So for those of you who have not heard….I GOT A JOB!!!!!! I am working as a Midwife Assistant at the Cambridge University Hospital
(Addenbrooke’s for those of you who know the area). It’s quite fantastic because in this country,
the midwifes do as the obstetricians do in America, not including high-risk
pregnancies. But they follow the care of
the women and deliver the baby…so yea…I will be assisting in delivering
babies! I don’t actually start on the
ward until January, but I have been able to start training this week, which is
just reiterating everything I have done for the past years ...

so silly that it's such a big thing to leave!

Joe, my ...
