We’ve been in Prague for 24 hours now, enough time to begin to appreciate both the beauty and the sometime suffocating crowds of this enchanting city. Our apartment is the renovated top floor of a large building just around the corner from Staroměstske Naměsti, the heart of old Prague and the area most filled with the countless tourists who flock here in August. We knew when we rented it that it was a fourth-floor (that is fifth floor, the way we count floors) walk-up with no elevator. We hadn’t really counted on the 12-foot ceilings in thinking about how high that would be: 100 steps ...

We finished our exploration of Česky Krumlov today with a tour of its last surviving brewery, one that was founded sometime in the 13th century and moved to its present location, a Renaissance-era armory, in the 1620s. The tour was moderately interesting—we spent the extra money this time for a tour in English—and it ended with a free half liter of beer, which turned out to be our lunch before catching a bus to Česke Budějovice and from there to Bechyně.

This is a very different town, a sleepy little spa town on another river which I think flows into the Vltava—pronounced Vultava, with ...

Cesky Krumlov is a small town on the Vltava River about 180 kilometres south of Prague and not far from the Austrian border. The town is named for the bend in the river—Krumlov means “curve” or “bend” and Cesky (pronounced Chesky, which would be clearer if I could make the hacek over the C) simply means “Czech.” The river practically surrounds the old town as it curls around it, and it makes for an utterly charming, largely car- and motorcycle-free place to explore.

A large castle overlooks the town from the north bank of the river, and we spent a good part of the day exploring it. ...

The owner there travels to the Czech Republic and stocks the store, Sew Bedazzled, with a variety of glass beads. If you are in the area, you can stop in and create your own jewelry in the back, where they have tables set up.

My trip to Prague signified one of perhaps--gasp--my last. In some ways I can tell this is good, because the church and castle-awe is starting to wear off. I do hope to spend some days in smaller Spanish towns in the coming weekends, replacing monuments with hopefully a sense of the people and some winning conversations :-).

The weekend skimmed on being unconventional (I missed a clock that was voted Europe's worst tourist attraction) and began with a public transportation adventure that led Steve and I to the former Communist Blocks that surround the city. I've added pictures of ...

Probably the least known of all the destinations on our 3 week trip, Olomouc was nestled in the south eastern part of the Czech Republic and boasted a UNESCO World Heritage site in its main square. The site being the Holy Trinity Column that seemed strangely out of place as this dark gothic column clashed with the brighter, more colourful buildings that hugged the fringes of the main square.

Olomouc (pronounced Ola-moose) was a stop over before we arrived into Cesky Krumlov which we had heard so much about and has recently been put on to the list of semi well known places that everyone ...

It has been awhile since I wrote because the lack of internet has been a problem. I can really only access it when I am at school and usually only for a little bit at a time and this always seems to take a long time. But in lieu of recent events, I thought I would update.

First, I feel so horrible that I could not come home for grandpop's service. It was hard knowing that everyone was together and that I was not there. Even though I was in Prague for the weekend, I thought about everyone the whole time.

So since I last wrote, 2 weekends ago I went to Poland for the day.
Wow… has time just flown by. In 8 days, I will be boarding the plane that takes me back to MN.

Last Wednesday, Kari and I headed to the Christmas Markets once again to experience the holiday of St. Mikolas here. Mikolas is somewhat like the American halloween, or the closes they get. Kids dress up as with angels or devils. They have baskets or bags and walk around the streets. Adults dress up and walk around in groups of three or more. One adult is St. Mikolas. He is similar to our Santa, but skinnier and looks more like a pope in some ways. Another adult is an angel, dressed in ...

After returning from Vienna, I was catching up on sleep all week. Friday came very quickly. That day was very busy. Natalie and I had to stop at Mezibranska to turn in our November time cards. From there, we had to speed on over to Barrandov which is two different metros and 8 bus stops away from where we were. Luckily we made it there in time to get our money for working the month of October. That was officially my first real paycheck since I have been here. Man, did I feel rich. Now only if that total was in American dollars, then I would be extremely happy! On that night, Kari and I went to ...

Prague is a beautiful and enchanting city. The architechure for one is incredible and no two buildings are alike. The streets wound about like they were not planned to go anywhere. We wandered up to the Castle and discovered some of the most brilliant and detailed stained glass either of us had ever seen. We crossed the Charles Bridge a few times, dodging thousands of tourists. We took walks along the river, saw the famous astronomical clock change. The clock was one of the biggest dissappointments in Prague. Every hour this 'famous' astronomical clock, which is really pretty, is ...

Ok, a little exaggeration, but she is definitely a fan.

So, I felt like I had something special to plan, to really make her day memorable (something on the scale of our amazing trip to Tokyo two years ago...).
Dobre den! Life has been quite busy here in Prague over the last couple of weeks. Two weekends ago, Natalie and I went through a Czech Language immersion course, or so we were hoping. We visited our friend, Lubos’ home town. An hour bus ride from Prague, we arrived around noon on Saturday. We started off with some lunch of potato cakes. This yummy Czech food is growing on me quickly. Afterwards, we headed to Konopiste Castle. We took a tour of the inside learning about the hunter that owned the castle. He had killed over 300,000 animals. Most of the heads and antlers hung around the home. It ...

This has been by far the weekend with the most ups and downs. To begin with, I will tell you the down, so that I can end on a positive note.

Well to sum up the week, it was full of lessons and relaxing. Tuesday night, our neighbor Jenny turned 23. We went out with her and some friends to have dinner. We ate at a restaurant called Red Onion which has some of the most flavor able food in town. It was okay, but the meal Natalie and I shared had a little too much meat for our liking. Later in the week, from the inspiration of my friend Traci, I made homemade applesauce. I did it with ...

This town is a smaller version of Karlovy Vary and is home to the Kolonada spa wafer factory and the singing fountain. The Kolonada spa wafers consist of two paper-thin wafers with a filling, such as hazelnut, chocolate, or cocoa, sandwiched between the wafers. Nearly everyone on the street is either eating a spa wafer or is carrying a box of wafers to take home with them. Of course, I had to try one ...

Monday, June 25

We arrived in Karlovy Vary at about 8:30 pm and had to wait for a local bus to go to our hotel. Our hotel, Hotel Kucera, is located right in the center of town. We reached the front door of the hotel, only to find the gate locked. No one picked up at the phone number I had for the hotel and only wires stuck out of the spot where the buzzer should have been. Strangely, a lot of the hotels were locked and looked closed. We did find a hotel that was open and went in for help. The lady behind the desk tried the number we had without any luck. She then called a different ...
