I previously mentioned that there were 3 places on this trip that would encapsulate me, so far they were Cesky Krumlov and Bled and by now you will have guessed that the final one was Dubrovnik. Although the most heavily touristy of the 3, Dubrovnik was absolutely charming! It wreaked of history and legendary stories and was picturesque to add icing on an already darn sweet cake!

It had its problems before we could fully appreciate the place mind you and Rhys today still reminds me of the 'Disaster of Dubrovnik'! That happened later on during our stay. Dubrovnik (or Ragusa until 1918) ...

I arrived in Zadar at about lunchtime on the bus from Split. The website for the place that I was staying said that it was only 1.5km from the city so I figured that I could walk to get there. That was a big mistake because Zadar takes the poorly marked street signs to new heights when compared to the rest of Croatia. It also is very lacking in footpaths even on major streets.

I missed the street that I needed because despite the fact that it is a major street, it didn't have any name written on it. I headed up into the suburbs a bit before deciding that I must have missed it and headed ...

Today was another gorgeous day so I headed out of Split to Trogir which is about 30 km north. I had a little trouble finding where I was meant to catch the bus. That whole bus station before the right bus station thing was a little confusing but eventually I ended up at the right place, and the right stop and got on a bus to Trogir. It's really well served by public transport and there are three buses an hour for most of the day (leaving on the hour, 20 past and 20 to). It took about an hour to get out there and cost 19 kn (you can buy a ticket from the driver or the conductor on the bus). It ...

I arrived in Split after dark so didn't get to see much on my first night. My first priority was to find the youth hostel and get rid of my bag. I had read on the web that the hostel could be difficult to find so I didn't want to be wandering around in the dark for ages lugging my stuff. I didn't have much trouble finding the right street (though, street signs that aren't the same colour as the buildings that they are on would be a really good idea, guys!) but had a little trouble finding the right house (street lights would be another bonus). I eventually worked out which one it was by ...

There are a lot of stairs in Dubrovnik. I am the stair master. I have mastered the stairs. The maps of Dubrovnik don't really make it clear quite how many stairs there are in the old town. That pretty much you can only see about two things in town without going up at least one step. This is not the town for people in wheelchairs, people with pushers or the unfit. I felt like I'd done 20 minutes at the gym just from carrying my gear from the bus stop to the pension. And that was before I started sightseeing.

I arrived in the late afternoon on the plane from Zagreb and it took a while to ...

We swim.

After lunch Kim and I hike back and take the boat to St. Mary’s Islet where there is a monastery. Afterward we enjoy drinks at the beach side bar at the Hotel Odisej. We take many great photos of Lovrijenac fort, the cities red roof tops and the dome of the baroque Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin. We can’t spot the damage caused by the Homeland War when the city was under siege for 6 months in 1991.

Next we pay admission to the ...

We stop off at Croatia’s most famous and most photographed beach Zlati Rat (Golden Cape) for a swim. Our boat is the first one there, but other boats and junkers soon join us. Kim, Julie and I take the kayaks into shore. The beach is pebbled and very crowded.

We stop off in another cove and practice diving. Tatiana and Yubo are excellent divers. Tatiana just can’t quite master it and actually breaks blood vessels on her thigh.

That evening we dock in Milna, the ...

This is the only port where the action literally isn’t just outside our gang plank.

We set out to explore the city right after lunch. Trish and her sister, Julie, join us about a half hour later. Trish is a friend from ebay.

The three other NY couples that were supposed to be joining my group of 7 have cancelled ...

Mom, Kim, Julie C. and I meet in Frankfurt for our connection to Split. From the plane I can see that the water is a beautiful turquoise and that the land is quite arid, almost desert-like, though mountainous. We arrive in the early afternoon and take a 350 kuna cab to our hotel, Consul Hotel. At this point we have no idea how much that is in US dollars because of the terrible exchange rate in the airport. We climb two flights of stairs to our suite with a large entry room, bedroom, living room and balcony overlooking part of the city. We take a short nap and then walk down to the Harbor.

Greetings from the island of Mljet. Also known as the green island. Mljet is accessible from Dubrovnik by fast a fast ferry boat.
A delightful ferry boat ride south of Dubrovnik, is the cute coastal town and village of Cavtat.

There are two beautiful bays with steep green mountain ridges separating the two. The cute outdoor cafes and art shops make these two bays very picturesque and enjoyable. There are many narrow stepped alley ways rather than streets leading up into the hills. Ohy the steps.

There are several pleasant and and picturesque beaches set in the pine forests with direct access to the Adriatic. Be sure and hike the mountain ridge thru the forest for the most dynamic views, and rocky cliffs ...

Greetings from Lokrum, Lokrum is a protected UNESCO Nature reserve island accessible from Dubrovnik by a short ferry boat ride. The island is heavily wooded with pine trees, very rugged beaches, cliffs, hiking trails, a small salt lake inland, and a naturist beach. Shady paths over hung by pine trees run around and Thur the island. Take your mats and towels, climb the cliffs and enjoy the scenery, sun and and crystal clear teal blue water. There are metal ladders and steps leading from the cliffs into the water. The tranquility of thick pine forests and rocky cliffs is an oasis of ...

We checked into our apartment in old town by climbing only 114 steps strait up hill to the top of old town. When reaching the top, oxygen was not provided. LOL After a brief nap we climbed back down the steps to the center of old town for a very exciting evening. We managed to have dinner at an outdoor cafe. (you ...

You can climb the walls of the city for an amazing ...

Cavtat is a sleepy village just down the coast from Dubrovnik. It is approximately a 40 minute boat ride south from the Dubrovnik old town harbor.
Day 5: Ferry to Korcula

You have a few options in returning to Dubrovnik, from where you’ll most likely be flying out.

You can reverse the outbound portion, driving from Split back to Dubrovnik.

You can take a 6 1/2 hour ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik

You can see if Atlas Travel (there are agencies everywhere) is running a tour from Hvar to Dubrovnik so you can take advantage of the private hydrofoil as unfortunately there are no regular hydrofoils to/from Hvar and Dubrovnik

I prefer to split up the trip and spend the night on Korcula, a 3-hour ferry from Hvar.
