So here it goes!

3/31/08

We got up today and started the drive to Durban. On the way to where we stayed we stopped at the Indian Market. It was a huge building with probably close to a hundred different stands selling all kinds of African souvenirs. We spent a couple of hours browsing the stands and making purchases. After the market we drove out to where we stayed…oh my! It’s called a Backpackers place and was very…sparse. We split up and stayed 4 to one room and 5 to the other…except they ...

Cape Town is of the most scenic cities I've ever been to. The backdrop of Table Mountain and the surrounding ocean encourages constant picture taking! On our first full day here we took it easy on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a very safe and clean touristy area. There are tons of restaurants and shops to spend time at on the waterfront, as well as the interesting Two Oceans Aquarium. At the Aquarium we especially liked watching the sharks swim from the shark tunnel, where they go right overhead. We learned that more people are killed per year by toasters than by sharks! Eating ...

Woke to cold and rain...again. Walked down to the Red Moon Coffee Bar. Already buzzing with locals at 7:00. Walked down to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the rain. Very trendy upscale malls that would rival any mall in the US. with Fossil, Crocs, KFC, McDonald's and many gift/adventure type shops. Explored the shops (gifts are much more than at the local markets..big surprise. Waited to see if the weather would clear to catch the ferry to Robben island. Route finding is a little tricky but this adds to the adventure.

From the top of the concrete road and next to De Villiers Reservoir, continue downhill to the Overseers Cottage on your right.
On our first day in Africa, we went for a city tour and went up table mountain. The 360 degree revolving cable car ride was quite interesting. We also went to an ostrict ranch and got to ride on an ostrict. It was funny watching the staff catch the ostrict so that people can ride on it. The staff put a black plastic bag over the ostrict's head and then the ostrict would not run about and it would allow itself to be led anywhere.

Afterwards when we got back to the hotel at around 4 plus, we decided to go for a walk around our hotel, just to get a feel of the city. Guess it was a bad idea. ...

Our final day in the winelands, we hit Backsberg (one of the few totally "green" wineries in the world) as well as a great cheese farm which made the makings of a perfect picnic lunch. For our final night in the winelands, we thought we'd book a night in a farmhouse and boy, did we happen upon a good one. We stayed with Maike and Jonathan at Hawksmoor House. Built in the 1700s, it has been beautifully restored and we enjoyed beautiful views of Table Mountain and a stunning sunset - of course alongside a bottle of Hawksmoor wine which was equally lovely!
On Friday 30 March, the second leg of the Table Mountain Tented Trail was officially in Silvermine by Glenn Phillips, the South African National Parks director of tourism. Part of the collection of Hoerikwaggo Trails, this section starts from Slangkop Point, next to the lighthouse in Kommetjie. Hikers then walk along NoordhoekBeach beside the Atlantic Ocean before climbing a recently constructed path on Chapman’s Peak, controlled access. After lunch, there is another ascent towards NoordhoekPeak before joining the Amphitheatre Path above Silvermine reservoir and the final stretch to the tented ...

I had the opportunity to visit two different orphanages on my trip here in South Africa. I first visited the Beth Uriel home for boys age 15-23. One of the surfers lives in this home, and he invited us to see where he lived. It is a big house made over to accommodate 26 kids. They have a common room with a tv, a communal bathroom with three showers, a cafeteria style kitchen, a study room, and several bedrooms fitted with closets for each kid.
My whole experience in South Africa was based around my opportunity to volunteer at Gary's Surf School in Muizenberg. Gary is a boisterous surfer who has been in the surf scene for many years. He runs his surf school with a salesman pitch who whole-heartedly loves surfing and all it has to offer those who try the sport! My job entailed working with tourists and local kids on their surfing skills in the water. Being that I learned to surf the first day I got here, I was a little intimidated by the idea of being an instructor. The thing I learned though, is that I could do it!

While ...

Denny and I served breakfast for 9 Monday morning and then took off for SLC. It was a pleasant, uneventful drive -- just the way we like it! Jann and Ray hosted us and we shared a pleasant Thai dinner at the Lemon something behind the CRANE building downtown. MMMMMM Tuesday morning Jann drove us to the airport and we took off for NYC. There we stayed with "guests who became friends" Jinny and Mark in their lovely Roosevelt Island condo. Thanks to all of you out there who welcome us so warmly into your homes!

Wednesday evening we flew South African Airlines to Johannesburg and then ...

A great find, with contemporary decor and welcoming service. Our room was really large with massive high ceilings with en-suite shower room. The guesthouse is 3 houses knocked together and has a terrace where breakfast is eaten and also a plunge pool. The complementary port and sherry went down a treat as well as the honesty bar which is stocked with all manner of yummy things!

Great guest house - we had our own cottage with patio and BBQ looking over the vines. The grounds are great with a lake, pool and of course, lots of vines too! Also a great restaurant in the grounds - 96 Winery Road which apparently is consistently rated one of South Africa's top restaurants! Great place to relax (it's actually located between Stellenbosch and Somerset West) and great value too.

As many of you know, my aunt Mary and uncle Jim came for a two week visit in South Africa! It was fabulous! They arrived into Cape Town on the 31st of January, and it was a whirlwind of activity until they left on the 16th of February! To start it off, Mary was originally going to travel here alone. For those of you who don't know Mary, she had difficulty ordering a coffee from Starbucks on a trip with Cari and I last winter! I was needless to say a little worried about her journey here! Thank goodness my uncle agreed to travel along!

They stayed in a beautiful cottage in Camps Bay ...

I felt like I was staying in a family friend's house for the weekend. It was right on Long Beach, a gorgeous white sand beach with big waves and cold Atlantic water.

The i-to-i volunteers came in ...
