By Dan

Oh, yeah, there are some temple things near Siem Reap, right? Angkor Wat, etc.? That’s why we went there, right? Yep, and they were very cool. OK, here’s the long awaited description. . . .

First, some background. The area around Siem Reap was the capital of the Khmer Kingdom off and on for about 400 years, from the 9th through the 13th centuries. Various kings wanted to build their own cities, and the associated temples, and devoted enormous resources in the form of artisans and laborers to do so. At its height, there were a million people living in the area. Compare ...

If you are ever over that side of the world make sure you pop into Laos and say hello.

The two guys from holland had to cross the boarder today as well. We got a boat off Don Det and headed for the mainland. We got in A mini Van and headed for the Laos / Cambodian border. It was the funniest border crossing i have ever seen. The customs office was a little shed. They would gladly take your $20 for the visa. They also ...

By Dan

. . . The Siem Reaper, that is, as in Siem Reap, the Cambodian city that is home to one of the world’s most amazing collections of temples. Angkor Wat and its companions were high on the list of things I was most excited to see and do and experience when we left on this trip, and Christina and I grew increasingly excited as we got closer. (To heighten the anticipation, I’m going to save my description of the temples for a separate blog entry. Read on, for a description of Siem Reap and the rest of the things we did there.)

First we had to get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. ...

By Christina

The legacy of the Khmer Rouge resonates in Cambodia to this day and is like a dark shadow lurking in the corners of Cambodian homes and shops. From roughly 1975 to 1979, hundreds of thousands of Cambodians were relocated to agricultural cooperatives in the countryside, where they were forced to farm “for the greater good”.
By: Christina

Arriving in bustling, hustling Cambodia after mellow Laos and pristine Thailand was a big change. There are lots of people everywhere and the streets are darn crowded. There is also quite a bit of pollution and litter, and both the Mekong and the Tonle Sap rivers (Phnom Penh is where they meet) are fairly stinky and nasty looking. The drivers – in cars, on motor scooters, or in tuk tuks –make crossing the street a major challenge and there definitely is a sense of chaos in the air. The place feels reminiscent of India rather than Laos and Thailand, which is not surprising ...

What a great spot. The location was absolutely perfect - directly across from the Royal Palace, easy walking distance to the riverfront, national museum, restaurants and shops, and an easy tuk tuk ride to the killing fields and S21. Our room was enormous and all four of us had room to sleep, set up our bags and hang out. We loved eating breakfast on the porch - it made us feel like we were back in the Phnom Penh of the 50s!

Our one-day stop in Bangkok was actually more like 2 because we had a late flight to Phnom Penh (Cambodian Capital) but we just spent most of the day writing to you lovely people before catching a bus to the airport in the afternoon. Our flight got in at 7.30pm and after sorting out visas and clearing customs we went in search of some cash! The cash machine in the airport would only give out US Dollars so we found one outside, which was the same so we decided to just get out Dollars and try using them! We soon realised that the Dollar was more widely used than the Cambodian Riel, or at ...

When we arrived in Ban Lung got a lift to the Lakeside Lodge Hotel and got a room with a Private bathroom and TV for $5!!! The guest house is in an old generals house so it is very nice. On our first day we walked 6km to a volcanic crater lake. It was not a pleasant walk as it was so dusty, we got covered in red dust. The lake was nice though as it was surrounded by jungle-ish tress, and was good to swim in. There were quite a few kids fishing and playing around the lake. They were catching little shrimps and eating them raw!!! Our second day we did a tour. We were meant to set off 9 ...

!! On en gardera un super souvenir !

Les gosses qui criaient: "hello! What's your name?!" en nous ...

It must have had something to do with just spending a week at the beach that we decided to splash out $10 and stay at a guesthouse with a pool, whilst we stayed in Siem Reap.

It was hard to get our bearings from the last time we visited 5 years ago, as this was probably the place where you could see just how tourism has made its mark on the area. Last time we were in Siem Reap there was a handful of bars and restaurants to choose from, now every building that lines the streets of the old market area has been converted to one, the place comes alive at night.

The biggest attraction ...

We arrived at immigrations to obtain our visa, it should have been $20 but each duty officer kept adding his own $1 'administration fee', which we found interesting!

Apart from Thailand, Cambodia is the first country on this trip that we have both been to before and wanted to return to, as we really enjoyed our time here but didn't feel we had explored enough of it.

Kratie is a small market town on the mekong river about 3hrs drive south of the Laos/Cambodian border.
We have a 4 hour bus trip to get here. The tuk tuk mafia are waiting for us. Today I use the "Barkers patented backward Russian hawker confuser" to deal with them. Try to imagine some one speaking Russian, backwards. What ever the ask you just make this unintelligible noise in reply while gesturing toward the sky. After a very short while they wander off, confused, looking for easier marks. After another struggle we're booked in.

I know you'll all go AAAAAAAAHH poor sods, but we had a quick tot up and think weve stayed in around 35-40 hotels in the last 3.5 months not stying put ...

Our trip to Siem Reap requires a return journey to Phnom Penh which we're happy about as we grew to really like the city. We're travelling "Mekong Express" a slighty upmarket outfit (the 4 hour trip costs all of $6 US) which include a "inflight meal" and an Hostess. Today our hostess has a voice that is particularly annoying. She clearly does not understand English and has learned the script, which having repeated it so many times she now speels out at an enormouse rate of knots.
When we arrived Reena went to check the room out to make sure it was ok. We had been recommended this hotel at the one from Battambang. We liked it so checked in and breathed a sigh of relief to be out of that taxi. We had some tea in the room while we sorted ourselves out. We had laundry to give in and a plan to make for visiting Angkor Wat the next day. We discussed what we were going to do, made a list, showered and went to talk to the receptonist. We then went out for dinner at Sawasdee Food Garden. We got a tuk tuk there as it was a fair bit to walk and was on the othersideof the river. ...

So I counted myself lucky.

The night before we'd said goodbye to Maciej and Ola yet again, by treating ourselves to an extravagant meal. Magda and I had steak, Maciej got a Khemer dish called Lak Lok which was delicious. It was possibly the best piece of seasoned beef I've ever had. But I ...

When we arrived at Phnom Penh airport we had to get our visas sorted. So we went to queue up and gave in our passports with the forms we had filled on the plane with one photo. One person took this, the cashier took the payment, someone put the visa in the passport and another person handd the passports back out. It was all quite efficient. We didn't have to wait too long at all.

We then collected our bags and got a taxi into town as the only other alternative was to go by motorcycle. The taxi driver took us to a hotel we had asked for. We had a look at the rooms, but didn't like what we ...

Phnom Penh has to be the only city where the cops ride around in black landcruisers, and where you can spot a dude on the back of a scooter carrying an IV drip that's plugged into his wrist!

We relented to the endless touts at our hotel, and agreed for one of the guys who worked there to take us on a tuk tuk tour of the city.
