By the time we arrive at JFK airport in NYC tonight, we will have been traveling for 24 hours straight.

Back to our last day in Buenos Aires....

We arrived at our hostel late Sunday night after a 13 hour-long day of travel via bus and boat from Montevideo. What stings about this is that we could have paid slightly more and gotten to Buenos Aires via a speed boat in about 50 ...

It's a big city full of European-style buildings, food stalls that were hoppin' even at 2am on a Wednesday, flower stands, cobbled streets, antique shops, and lots of people. An estimated 18 million people live in the Buenos Aires province, which is about 45% percent of Argentina's total population of 40,301,927. Most of Argentina, especially the Patagonian region, is very sparsely ...

Buenos Aires, we had been told many a good story of this capital city. We had high expectations and were not disappointed.
DAY 61 - 2 FEBRUARY 2008 (SATURDAY)

We had a leisurely start to the day by visiting the mercado and markets for groceries and doing some bookings for accommodation in Montevideo.

We then walked up Puerto Madero which is kind of a very long Southbank, the river (docks etc) are lined with restaurants and apartments. It was nice, just very quiet, maybe things liven up here at night. The renovations have been well done keeping the character and tradition of the docklands with cobbled paths and brick warehouses and the restaurants all open up onto the paths. Apparently the real ...

There are trains every 8 minutes, so we didn't have to wait long.

Tigre is a small town, although now it is an outer suburb of Buenos Aires but it is on the Rio de La Plata delta, so is a bit cooler and has a village feel to it.

We headed to Estacion Fluvial and the tourist office to get a map of the area and bought some tickets on the local ferry to Tres Bocas and headed out there as there is a nature walk around the ...

DAY 56 - 28 JANUARY 2008 (MONDAY)

We left Rosario on the 8am bus, which was the first we could get and headed down Ruta 9. The scenery wasn't much to see, except the rain started and got heavier and heavier, not a good sign.

The traffic etc increased as we entered the outskirts of Buenos Aires with lots of country clubs and gated communities. The roads are fairly well maintained, but that is probably the millions of tollways you have to go through to get anywhere here.

We arrived into Retiro about 12ish, which is the main transport hub with the buses, trains, local airport ...

Eli was right. Buenos Aires is AMAZING.

It also brings new meaning to the phrase ¨the city that never sleeps¨. The sun rises at 6 AM and sets at 8 PM, lighting the city approx. 15 hrs a day. TWO THIRDS OF THE DAY. It is so weird walking around at 8 PM and feeling like it can´t be later than 3 PM. Further south in Patagonia (we´re counting the days to the trek!) it will be light nearly 19 hrs per day - better for us to see the pumas with I guess. ;) In BA not most, but nearly all Argentinians go to dinner at or after 10 PM, and we followed suit. We even saw toddlers out after ...

We arrived safely and with luggage in Buenos Aries - it was a big relief to do so after the poor flight from LHR to Milan due to some disruptive Polish gangsta´s on the flight who insisted on coming up to the seats next to us to talk to their pals for the entire journey and did not take the hints that we (sat next to the head man) did not want to be bothered - that and one of the guys trying to hit on the stewardess and sitting in her seat - we were pretty glad when they did not get on the Buenos Aries flight!

After arrival we got a taxi to the Marriott - using up my points so this was a ...

Começo com dicas gerais de Buenos Aires que envie pra Dani Proença, minha roomate em Lake Tahoe.
Hola familia y amigos!

After a 2-hour delay and a sleep-deprived 13 hour flight from Madrid, I was anxious to get to my hostel when I finally landed in Buenos Aires. I knew at some point during my 3-month journey that there was a strong probability of losing my luggage. So I wasn't completely shocked when I didn´t see my backpack on any of the baggage turnstiles. I was the last person in baggage claim when I finished filing my missing equipaje report with Aerolinas Argentinas. By then it was 2am and I was extremely jet-lagged, which is why I managed to misplace my passport as well. ...

In the Recoleta, there is a new and old part (La Mansion). The lobby and restaurant are nice, with mid 1990s design, huge floral arrangements and very colorful artwork. The service was great and the manager was fantastic. The rooms and suites in the new section were spacious and all bathrooms have jacuzzi tubs. I didn’t find the design to be anything spectacular, but it’s in a great location and features the Four Seasons service. The pool area is fantastic and faces La Mansion, a gorgeous pink building built around 1912. I couldn’t go inside as it was fully booked, but there are 3 suites that ...

In the upscale Recoleta, this famed property has seen better days. It feels very big and corporate, not to mention faded and fussy. The rooms I visited were dark and the curtains and bedspreads were in need of updating. It’s definitely ornate and grand, and the bar area has character, but it was my least favorite hotel visited and the manager I met with had zero personality or enthusiasm. The indoor pool is truly embarrassing, more a large hot tub and the spa is depressing. It is being fully overhauled this winter however

Absolutely stunning... by far my favorite hotel visited. The location in the Recoleta is the same as the Alvear & Four Seasons but the design is amazing and they’ve retained most the original manse. The rooms in the old and new sections are exactly the same except the ones in the old have antique touches, like glass chandelier in the bathroom or brass doorknobs, all from the original structure. They are tastefully designed; modern yet warm and being so new everything is in tip-top shape. The outdoor area is fabulous...terraced fountains, bistro tables, lush greenery in between the beautiful ...

Philippe Starck-designed hotel in the newly hip Puerta Madero dockside neighborhood, gentrified mainly due to this property blazing the way. While not a far walk from the Microcenter and San Telmo, it’s a bit of a ways out. The lobby and entranceway features brick and colored glass and is meant to feel like a cathedral. The rooms are a decent size with transparent glass bathrooms and updated ‘antique’ furnishings and textiles. Unique touches like embroidered blankets, studded headboards and beveled mirrors soften the high-design. Sunny outdoor pool and bar are the place to be.

10 Ways to Love Latin America

Latin America has a certain magic that leaves you intrigued by its array of cultures, history and people. It adds colour and energy to your soul and makes you realise that there is so much more to life than the nine to five job that most of us are used to. It is however very difficult to fully understand or appreciate such a fascinating corner of the world without contemplating some of the lessons that I picked up along my travels without which I don’t think that I would have loved it as much as I do.

1) Learn to Speak Spanish

What do Cubans ...

The bus was then delayed arriving in Buenos Aries - we were due to arrive at 1045am and that's why we picked this company, we got here about 1245pm. Anyway we hoped in a cab and got dropped off at a hotel that was recommended by the Lonely Planet.
Nice hotel, we had a room on 8th floor with a mezzanine level with bed and bathroom. The downstairs part had a bar and lots of antique furniture. all for bargaing 50 quid. After Iberia lost our rucksack in Madrid the hotel (Javier) reception were extrememly helpful in making calls to assist us and even called us in Patagonia to say the bag had been delivered to our next location.
This is going to be brief as I am falling asleep at this computer. Today, Regina and I went to the famous Recoleta cemetary. It´s the first time that I have visited a cemetary as a tourist but it had to be done. Recoleta is not just any cemetary, it is an upmarket suburb for the dead. It contains streets of beautifully carved tombs, some decorated with statues and others with church-like domes. Walking around the cemetary and admiring the tombs was so relaxing especially in the warm winter sun. We followed the other tourists to Eva Peron´s tomb. It was very simply decorated compared to ...

I could be in Vienna or London but then I realise that I don´t understand a word of ...

It´s about 5 in the morning as I write this, we were out all night and have been learning to Tango... more of that later but Jo's toes are increadible sore!

We checked out of our hostel in San Pedro after a little difficulty. It´s pretty normal for buses to leave at odd times of day so most hostels have a small room for left luggage.
