Arrived in Kelowna Saturday at 7 p.m. after picking George and Irene up at the Vancouver airport. Had to stop in Hope, B.C. so George, the great white hunter and explorer, could sample the great Canadian beer: Molson Canadian. Nice dinner with Craig and Tara Emter that evening. Boys off to Shannon Lake Golf Course for breakfast and golf Sunday morning. Great weather. Anna, Irene, Lei, Susan, and Ray joined us for drinks after golf on the clubhouse deck, overlooking the course and Shannon Lake, and then we went up the mountain to Jack and Lynn's place. What a view! One of our favourites. Tara ...

I was in one of their "category 3" rooms, which is about the size of a smallish bedroom, and it was $46 a night (this was during the high season), and the next cheapest hotel room in victoria is like $130. they also had cheaper rooms but they were really, really small. What I really liked were all the little things, like their bike storage downstairs, which was easy to get in and out of. And they had payphones on ...

Today we made our way down Van Island towards Victoria. First we hit Tim Hortons for some b-fast and the trip almost stopped right there. Someone (I won’t mention any names) forgot her purse in the place! Thank god she realized only about 10 mins down the road to Victoria, AND that some honest souls had turned it in! It contained our passports, and all of her ID, which would have made the border crossing planned for tomorrow next to impossible!! Anyway, a lucky break on that one!!!

We setup camp at the KOA just north of town. It was the earliest we’d been into a campsite so far, but of ...

Hey everybody! The excitement continues on the west coast! Today we packed up camp in Salmon Arm and headed for the first stop, Kamloops. I’m sure Steph has already mentioned the camera incident, by which the camera was broken, so we needed to get a new one. Anyway we got a sweet new camera after a bit of shopping there, and then worked further west down the Trans-Canada. There is a new highway there now that you can take which apparently is faster … it’s called the Coquahalla (not sure on the spelling) Highway (Hwy 5) … but we opted to stay on the Trans-Canada cause it’s cooler mountain ...

For $9 a night, it's best to get a group and crowd one site. There are no limitations on # of people per site, but I think you can fit up to 4 or 6 people per site pretty reasonably. This can bring the cost down dramatically. also, there is a shopping plaza just up the road, 30 - 45 minute walk. this campsite is best suited for those wanting to climb the chief or boulder at the base.

To break the long journey home from Fiji we decided to spend a few days in Vancouver. We had heard that its a great city to visit and we were keen to see it for ourselves.

The city is situated by a large natural harbour and to the north it has a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Within one hour you could be skiing or snowboarding down one of the peaks. It has some great restaurants and some peaceful leafy suburban streets.

The greatest asset that the city has is undoubtedly Stanley Park, it is one of the largest public parks in North America. It stands on the end of a peninsula ...

A very strange fashion trend of a past era hit Fernie this wednesday. Hotdog day, in honour of the great 1984 ski movie , was held and many strange outfits appeared on the mountain in homage of the luminous ski costumes of the period. Straight skis, snurfers and 80s techniques all surfaced, culminating with a massive deck party on the hill. Here is the (edited) photographic evidence!!

We have been busy back at school this week (although it's much more fun with the mountain as the classroom) and I'm delighted to say that Rob and I have both qualified as Snowboard Instructors.
Just returned from a few days exploring nearby (well, "nearby" in Canadian terms meaning 6 hours drive!) hills. Having been based in Fernie for nearly 2 months, it was great to find some new scenery.

We had a great day in Kimberley with blue skies and hard packed snow, and had the pleasure of watching the Canadian ParaOlympic Skiers competing in the slalom. They were hurtling down the mountain at amazing speeds that I could never reach on my snowboard - watching from 10 feet away as opposed to on the telly is a real experience.

Headed up to Rossland at the end of the day, via the ...

the big Canadian immigration official didn't seem to take too kindly to this.
Oh and this was after the official had given Adam the Spanish

Happy Griz days to all! This weekend is carnival in Fernie, in honour of the local legend, the Griz who guarantees good snow to Fernie. Find out more about the legend at http://www.skifernie.com /news-and-info/the-griz -legend.aspx , but in a nutshell it's a good excuse for a few days worth of parties! Best part was the sea things collected in jars.

Craigdorrah Castle - not so much a castle as a mansion of a rich family that lived in the late 1800s, early 1900s.
We stayed at home, in Parksville for little over a month. Most of the nights were spent living at our parents homes, and visiting with family members. We did, however, occasionally sneak off to explore the beautiful island and enjoy the scenery while we were there.

Tofino, B.C., is a definite must see place if you are on the island. I have grown up two hours away and it still remains one of my favourite places to viist. The solitude, atmosphere and world class scenery make it what it is, a quiet local hang out in the winter, and an tourist attraction in the summer. We ended up staying ...

We have made it to our first stop on adventure! After relatively painless journey to Calgary (although taking two huge snowboard bags on the tube in the rush hour not recommended) we met up with our landlord Graham for a few beers and the lowdown on the small town of Fernie where we are to spend the next few months. Keys exchanged, we headed up on a four hour boneshaker bus across the Rockies to arrive in Fernie late Sat 4th.

The last week have been spent getting to know the town (charming, turn of the century place with pretty much all you need) and the mountain, a series of 4 bowls off ...

From Vancouver we headed to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, for a few days. Victoria is similar in many ways to Vancouver, although much smaller.

We had a lovely few days, during which we visited the Royal British Columbia Museum, which was awesome and probably one of the best museums we have been to on our travels. It has some fantastic (and very lifelike) dioramas, and is well thought out, well laid out and easy to explore.

We also visited Fisherman's Wharf, where not only are lots of fishing and sailing boats moored, but there are a lot of floating houses (I think this is the ...

Finally arrived in Vancouver after a nightmare journey - cancelled flights, delayed flights.... we arrived about ten hours after we were due, and about 20 hours after we departed Brisbane.

Our first thoughts of Vancouver were how cold it was, although everyone kept telling us that it wasn't cold (I think it was about 7 degrees when we arrived). Of course if I had just come from England I would agree that it wasn't cold, but after three months at 30 degrees, I'm sorry but 7 degrees is cold!

We got to our hostel and were both suffering from jet lag - decided there was no point even ...

Granville Island is worth seeing when it's open. For Seattlites, it's a
cross between Pike Place Markets and Fremont. For Sydneyites, its cross
between Paddy's markets or maybe rather Parklea Markets and Newtown but
with a lot more perzazz. Also, park on the southern side before the

only a short walk under the bridge to Granville Island)
