My faith has been restored in Belize. After a short (but not short enough) stay in Belize City, I got on a bus to San Ignacio, which is on the border with Guatemala. The bus ride was uneventful, and I got into San Ignacio about an hour and a half later. It's a pretty small town built into the hills. I met a couple from the UK on the bus and we went to find a hotel together. The one that we were looking for that our guidebook suggested turned out to be out of business, but the guy that we asked directions from showed us another place we could go. Again it was pretty much just somebody's house ...

We didn't plan to come here at all, but somehow we ended up in this little town, a true carribean paradise where we would meet the real garifuna culture!

(more to come!)

Unfortunately, the Lonely Planet isn't very up-dated on Belize, and instead of taking any ferry from Belize City, we had to take a bus all the way down to Dangriga for a ferry to Honduras.
The cayes (pronounced “keys”) are where Belizeans go to vacation. It was pure Caribbean: turquoise water and
coconut palms. I live about as far as
you can get from an ocean and soon learned what I’d been missing. Everything is better on the beach: making
music on the beach, doing yoga on the beach, talking on the beach, eating

After a few hours in Belize City (not much to do there really) we met my parents at the airport. Watched their plane land from the waving deck. So nice to see them.

After the potatoes and pampers were loaded on in bulk, we could get on the ferry (actually more like a speed boat) to Caye Caulker. From first arriving it was clear our few days here would be very chilled out. We caught a golf buggy to our Cabana at the Ocean Pearl Royale Hotel. The golf buggy was really overloaded with all our luggage, a typical scene on the island.

The cabana was very basic but had its own Caribbean ...

Just a few hours sail from San Pedro (Ambergris Key) we found the nicest spot yet. The water is almost see through and we almost forget we're on it because the waves are next to nothing. It's VERY nice. The town is small but cheap and we did our laundry and sent some mail. There is lots of potential for growth, but we like it the way it is now. Soon we will head out and check out the atolls on the coast heading further south and will return here to meet up with Dan and Katie. We will be a full cat for a few days and then Alisa will return to the Sates from Belize City and Dan and Katie ...

San Pedro was bustling with rastas and off the beaten path tourists. There was a LOT of activity all around us...kite surfers, windsurfers and charter boats taking people diving. We walked around town, which is only three long streets and enjoyed best the section of beach near Ramone's Restaurant and Lodging. A man found us on the street and offered us another day at a resort! So we enjoyed another day of pampering at Captain Morgan's.

Kingdom have flown into Belize to work with us in San

We spent most of the night walking or riding around talking about Hopkins, Guatemala (where both of them go/have gone to college), and the US. I met their cousins, Sponge and Patrick (as in Spongebob and his sidekick), I don't remember their real names. Sponge ended up giving me his bike to ride for the rest of the night because he was too drunk to ride anymore.

I went to church last Sunday for the first time since I have been in Belize. It was interesting! I went to mass with my neighbors and landlords. Since it was ...

I stayed with the Tesecum family; mom, dad, and three kids (15,12,6). I got to see what it was like to live with Scott, Brooke, and Dylan, all under the same roof! Their personalities were perfect matches! The youngest and I spent most of our time together. I taught her how to hula-hoop (with the new one I bought her after we broke the old one!) and jump rope. In return, she taught me some dirty playground songs, featuring words a six year old definitely should not know! I also ...

We had a few free days, so a group of us decided to head down to Punta Gorda (affectionately called PG), where the group was to meet up for the Mayan homestays anyway. After a long, seven hour, complete with twenty minute stop to buy corn bus ride, six of us made it to PG. Four others followed later. Anyway, even though our first night was a Saturday and we all wanted to go out and have a good time, NOTHING was open! PG closes down at night, every night. Instead, we sat on the porch in hammocks talking. The next morning four of us went on a hike to nearby Cerro Hill. Kalyn’s guidebook ...

Just returned from a week in Mountain Pine Ridge. And yes I too was surprised to see a pine forest in Belize! We "camped" in a mostly abandoned town, which used to be the home of forest service personel, but due to budget cuts most of the workers have been laid off. We went on at least one hike everyday. Our first night we hiked up to a cave full of stalagtites and stalagmites. We hiked/crawled/slid to as far as we could go, and then sat in complete darkness listening to water drop. We also had a military escort on one of our hikes! Four armed guards hiked with us for like three hours! ...

I spent the

experience. There are really no “good”
neighborhoods in Belize City, there
is basically poverty everywhere you look.
But, I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable in my surroundings. We walked around downtown a lot and ran into
some interesting people, got A LOT of cat calls, and figured out how to
navigate streets with broken sidewalks and cars literally driving by with only
a few inches clearance. When I get back
to the states I am going to feel so insecure because there won’t ...

Let me just start with last night! We had about thirty international students from a university in Belize, who are here to learn English, over at the TEC to dance and mingle with Creole drummers. We were also told we would have a bonfire. So the drummers and the students arrived after we had dinner, but it was dark and they couldn’t get a very big fire going. So we all stood around trying to make conversation with someone we couldn’t see and could barely understand! Finally the fire got going, the beer started flowing, and the drumming began. We all danced for a little while, but it was still ...

Our canoe trip on the Belize River was relaxing. The first day we paddled 15-20 miles, but the river was flowing really fast, so we weren’t actually paddling very hard. We stayed the night at the Global Vocational School, camping on their lawn. Global is a vocational school for 12-17 year-old boys who don’t have the opportunity to go to high school, because the costs are so prohibitive. Global teaches skills like woodworking, mechanics, welding, and digging wells. All the teachers are volunteers, mainly from the states. They must pay for their own room and board; most are sponsored by people ...

FayaWata, previously known as Nefries, is one of the best places (in my opinion) to hang out. The crowd there is diverse with locals and tourists alike. Painted a deep shade of red and decorated with palm tree branches and Rastafarian memorabilia, this bar has a really good ambiance and feels "cozy!". Run by Aaron and his family, the staff here are very friendly and will welcome you will open arms. Most nights there is live music, this can either be local singer Devon Tate or Garifuna drummers playing on hand crafted mahogany and turtle shell drums. I would definitely recommend eating here!
