Ola!

I first arrived in Madrid after London, took a side trip to Portugal, headed down to Morocco and back up the coast of Spain to spend a few days in Barcelona. Madrid was good, not great. I expected more, I guess. When I came up from Fes, I wanted to spend a few days in Valencia. After the all night bus I arrived about 7am. I found out that there was a festival going on and Ï could not even find a 5 star hotel with a spare room. My Lonely Planet book said this festival was not until March, oops! I wandered around a bit, extremely exhausted. All I really wanted to do was find ...

I arrived in the early evening on the plane from Rome and headed straight to the hostel. There are regular buses to the city from directly out the front of the airport and they are around 4 euros. I decided to walk to the hostel from the bus station as it seemed easier than trying to get into the crowded metro with my bags on. There are always heaps of people about in Spain in the evenings so it is safe enough to wander around on the main streets. The city looks lovely at the moment because they have just put all the Christmas lights up and it is all sparkly. It is definitely a city that looks ...

I only stayed one night at this hostel but would have liked to stay more. The people who run the place are keen travellers themselves so know all the things that people want in a hostel. The internet is free and a good connection with three computers so you rarely have to wait. The kitchen isn't great but a lot of people don't cook while they are in Spain so I guess they haven't worried too much about that. The rooms are tiny because it is a house that has just had a hostel put into it and you have to have lockers out of the room but this is good in some way because it means that people aren't ...

Audrey and Paul had been there since Tuesday. When we got to Barcelona we were knackered as we had been up since 4am (shouldn't have gone to bed really!!). We arrived there in full spirits and full of spirits. We were dropping Niamh off to mom and dad's place as she was staying with them. We got there without too much hassle. Mom and Dad were staying in the gay quarter of Barcelona and you wouldn’t really be able to tell from the outside or from the ...

We try to take the cablecar to Montjuïc. De start is at the beach, behind the harbour. We arrive at 10.15, because we know it will open at 10.30. No... it opened at 10.45. Well after a long wait and a few more visitors it took a while and guess what... we were told the cablecar was broken. No cablecar today.
We arrived to Barcelona (pronounced Barthelona by the locals) by train from Madrid having flown in a few hours earlier with Easy Jet from Marrakech. We were a little shocked at the hotel prices, but were able to get a 50 euro room about a kilometer from La Rambla. Barcelona was a joy to walk in. We took an architecture walking tour showcasing the Modernisme movement (Gaudi and the Spanish version of art nouveau). The tour was to be about 2 hours, but the guide was so enthusiastic and loved the subject so much, that it took almost 4 hours. We did not mind that at all.

The streets and ...

Day 29: We hopped on our overnight train last night in Nice and were extremely pleased that we were wrong as to what a real sleeperette looked like. Apparently the Italian couchettes just suck! We actually slept on a sleeperette coming to Barcelona. They are just regular-looking train seats that have more room in between them than normal seats and almost recline down to a full 180 degrees. This we could do! On the train we met a really incredibly nice guy. His name was Shutaro and he was from Japan. He was traveling all by himself. We ended up talking to him for some time before we ...

It was a cozy little place which was hard to find but once you knew where it was it was great. They had breakfast and a large common room...it was easy to meet other travellers. We stayed in a 12 bed mixed dorm which we shared an "intimate" bed. It was almost like a treehouse which had two beds at the top of the ladder. We enjoyed this place very much and highly recommend it.

Well, today is our last full day in Barcelona. I am very sad...I could spend a month just living here getting to know the culture. Tomorrow we pick up the rental car and head north to Cadaques. Cadaques (kah-dah-KEHS) is a small fishing village near the French border. Salvador Dali was raised in near by Figures and lived in Cadaques as an adult with his wife Gala. We plan to tour Dali's house while we are there. We will spend two days in Cadaques laying on the beach and basically doing nothing.

We are hoping the 'busiest' (most touristy) part of our trip will have been here in ...

from a trip to Barcelona, Spain.

Today we drove to Spain via the edges of the mountains. The views again were something else.

On arriving in Barcelona we did a brief driving tour seeing the old Olypic site and the massive Sangrada Familia church designed by Guadii. After this we went for a walk throught the La Ramba and stopped to sample some Sangria...yum!

The next day we walked up to the Sangrada Familia to look inside. As many have said he was brilliant or mad....I think a bit of both. It is really something to behold and it is not even finished. It was started in the 1880's and is due to be completed in 2020.

The location of this hostel is unbeatable, just a short walk to Las Ramblas, subway, and the beach. Many fine eateries and bars surround the area. The hostel itself is sparse but adequate. It is kept EXTREMELY clean and the owner and staff are very friendly. They can understand most English.

We started off the day by walking to las ramblas, once again, to eat breakfast and upload our information to the blog at the internet cafe. While we were walking down las ramblas there were many entertainers on the side of the street, as usual. The funniest of which was a small dog dressed up and wearing sunglasses that would howl to the music that his master played. Absolutely hilarious.

One of the most important sights to see in Barcelona is of course the great works of Gaudi. The city has spectacular buildings designed and built by Gaudi that can be reached easily by subway. We ...

Hi everyone! We´re so excited to see your posts, we´re enjoying our adventures but missing you all terribly. It has definitely sunk in by now that we´re literally across the world-you might have thought it would sink in when we were wandering the streets of barcelona our first night, but there is something about settling in a bit, steping back a little, and taking it all in...Anyways, yesterday we slept in again; we´re certainly suffering from jet-lag. Once we got ourselves in gear we headed straight to the internet cafe to correspond with all of you. After a little more than an hour of photo ...

At 8:30 AM our alarm went off to warn us of the free breakfast that was awaiting us...it was shut off and we slept until one o´clock.

We took much needed showers and headed out into beautiful Barcelona and also realized the most advantageous location of our Hostel. We lost our itinerary in all the madness yesterday and had to wing it. We started walking along the water near our hostel and found Las Ramblas, the most bustling street in Barcelona. On this street, we met some nice people from Israel and Florida. We also found lunch at Subway because it was cheap. We also found the location ...
