If your a Sound of Music fan then you will love this. There are several different tour operators that do this tour but they are all pretty similar. You are driven round in an airconditioned coach with the hits from the film being played throughout. This really creates an atmosphere and gets you into the mood. You visit the Mirabell Gardens, where Doe a Dear was filmed, you will visit the glass house where I am Sixteen was filmed and several over places from the film. Unfortunately you can not get very close to some of the places but you do get to drive through some amazing scenery in the Alps ...

October 26 –

Vienna
Up at 4am this morning to fly Air Berlin to Vienna. Had some very good crossants in the airport. When we landed decided to take the CAT (City Air Train) to City Ctr. 16 minute ride to get there and 18 Euro for the two of us. Surprised at how few people there were on the streets. The conductor told us how to get from the train to our hotel. Involved an underground and a tram. Maybe we should have taken a cab (was going to be 33 Euro) Got the underground for 3 euro and took it for two stops. When we exited the underground our street was supposed to be right ...

Today I woke up in a panic. I looked at my ipod and saw the time was 9:30 and we had to be out of the hostel by 10. I rushed around trying to get ready until another mate in the hostel told me his clock read 8:50. Opps, never changed my daylight savings on it. But we were up and ready to do the town a little earlier than planned.

We had decided to head to Schobrunn Palace, a place highly recommended by my mother by others she had talked to. There, we got to see another Christmas market. They are all over! We walked around and got ourselves an austrian pretzel. Mine was pizza ...

We made a loop around the shops, looking at the craft that people had made and the food you could buy.

Next, we took the advice ...

Would you rather the sounds of silence or the sounds of music? Well...in Salzburg you really don't have a choice...there are two distinctive sounds of music...one is just that: THE Sound of Music...ahh yes...the classic (partially/very modified) story of the Von Trapp family, made memorable across the world by hollywood (with help from rogers and hammersteins catchy tunes). who doesn't like that movie??! well...simple answer...austrians.. .especially from salzburg. The other sound of music is the sound of good ol' Mozart and all of the hoopla surrounding his birthtown, the story of his entire ...

Migrant and highly intoxicated bums greeted our arrival into Austria's capital-by far the most we´ve seen in a large city. Not exactly how I pictured Vienna, but we soon climbed out of the train station and set foot to the streets of this wonderful city.

While walking the streets, and in very little time, we were approached by a Mozart lookalike, attempting to sell us expensive concert tickets to the evenings show. So of course we purchased two, feeling this is what you do when you visit such a city. Wolfgang assured us that our backpacker attire was appropriate for the evening's ...

Salzburg seemed like a nice little town, unfortunately weather did not cooperate while we were there. In our short 19 hour stay it managed to rain about 18 hours. Oh well, we still walked around a bit of town and saw some of the sights, including the home where Mozart lived until he was 24 years old.

The big attraction in Salzburg is to take a Sound Of Music Tour which takes you to a number of the sights it was filmed at. Since weather was not on our side, the tour was around 40 dollars, and neither of us have seen the movie we decided against it. Our hostel shows the movie every ...

Friday, 10 August

We arrived into Austria aruond 2pm and it was a little colder here in the mountains... about 14 degrees.

We checked into the campsite which was pretty close to the city and convenient, but didnt have any guest kitchen... so we couldnt cook any of the food we'd purchased to cook for dinner and brekfast, so ended up going into town instead. It was a god thing we did 'cause we ended up having a really beautiful dinner in town for pretty cheap, had Wiener Schnitzel.

Saturday, 11 August

We headed out of Austria and into Germany ...

Salzburg, Austria has got to be one of the cleanest cities in Europe. In spite of all the “messy tourists” who regularly visit this place you seldom see even a scrap of paper lying around. The downtown area is the oldest part of the city and yet every building appears freshly painted and the many open squares are as clean as a whistle. We visited the Mozart house not far from the Mozart Platz and the statue of Mozart (he is obviously their favorite son, since his early days were spent in this city). Another visit was made to a place Eric was especially interested in seeing—the Opera complex, ...

Klagenfurt is a lovely little town in Austria that I can guarantee we would have never, ever visited (or heard of) if Todd had not signed up for Ironman Austria.

The Ironmen love their gear, so we were travelling the opposite of light: a bike in a giant plastic case, four big bags, etc. Happily, our bags travelled perfectly during all seven flights through all four countries. And they were great flights: by Frankfurt, I was convinced we could just get back on the plane and go home, and still have had a great vacation.

We arrived in a rainy Klagenfurt in the afternoon. Trying ...

Humpty Dumpty took a great fall this morning when we ditched the heavy sausages for at least twenty eggs. Left Prague for a beautiful drive through sunflower fields and distant mountains. This was the first Real sunny day as the weather warmed as we approached Austria. We left the highway for a spell to rumble through a few small towns. Lots of gawkers, however we did meet up with a fellow Honda driver and his son at a gas stop. He was Czech and spoke no English, but we were able to share our hand signaled compliments of the bikes. One of the towns was called Brno (how is this supposed to be ...

Hello Everyone,

It's hot here in Vienna! It's also a very different vibe from Salzburg. There's still plenty to see but more like any other big city in the world. We are staying near Westbahnhof (train station) which is convenient to lug our 25kg bags only a short distance. Apart from that we are a little bit further from the main attractions so we get to do more walking :)

The place we're staying is a welcome change from hostelling. Technically it's still a hostel but the setup is a little different: the rooms are freshly painted with a modern feel, they are mostly double rooms ...

We also got to meet some very interesting people on the train, including a very drunk Austrian guy who was sharing the compartment with us. He was quite nice, and lots of fun to talk to as well...very interesting conversation!! Again our German is not quite up to scratch but we got around - mostly with lots of hand gestures and exasperated looks!

We were both very impressed with the buildings in the old town of ...

After a 3hr train journey from east to west of Austria we arrived in the beautiful city of Salzburg. The hotel receptionist assured us that it would pass, and by the time we had dried off it had. We walked into the centre of Salzburg which only took us 15mins. It was scorchin hot by then and we enjoyed wandering around the city.

We took in the following sights that afternoon.

Schloß Mirabell - Schwarzstraße - Marionettentheater - Landestheater - Staatsbrücke - ...

So we had plenty of time to have an explore of the city, however the directions to the hostel soon had us lost, they were totally inaccurate, does Vienna know its left from right, so we didnt get there until half four.
