Today we visited the 600 year old volcanic island, Rangitoto. After deciding against the dolphin watch when we found out you rarely get to swim with them, we bought a quick lunch at a Mexican place on Prince's Wharf, and took an early afternoon ferry to the island. The day began pretty hot, and continuted as such. (Volcanic rock has a nasty habit of reflecting the heat back up at you, making you feel like you just might melt into a puddle at any moment.) The trail up to the crater summit takes an hour to climb, according to the signs, so Tal and I figured we could probably do it in 45. We ...

C'est chouette Auckland même si les néo zélandais disent que ça n'est pas la Nouvelle-Zélande!

En 3 jours on a acheté un ...

Numbed by New Zealand: again.

We won the Netball! Does anything else matter? We were both excited about travelling to the small country, which could be reached from the UK by flying halfway around the globe or by patiently drilling a hole straight through planet Earth to the other side. We flew, of course, but it was not a far distance for us since we had spent the past five weeks in the nearby South Pacific island nations of French Polynesia, Cook Islands and Fiji. After a ...

Despite our best efforts to sleep in, we were up at 5:30am. Damn! We headed out around 7am and grabbed breakfast and coffee at Esquires near our hotel, then went to the ferry station where we saw the same friendly ticket agent from yesterday. He remembered our big run for the Devonport ferry the day before. After chatting with him, we bought tickets to Waiheke Island and took the 35-minute ride on the 8:15am ferry.

Waiheke is absolutely gorgeous. We rented a car from a company right in the ferry station and drove “the loop,” a trail that took us through the towns of Waiheke and the ...

Arriving on Waiheke Island felt a a bit like arriving in Provincetown after Boston,in the early days of our trip. The contrast between big city and small town island life couldnt have been bigger. The only reminder of Auckland was the distant figure of the sky tower looming over the city,on the other side of the harbour.

Its only about a 35 minute ferry ride from the port in Auckland. We stayed in a really cool little B&B called the Punga Lodge, run by a helpful local couple who kept us entertained. Life on Waiheke revolves around the beaches, fishing and the many vineyards which they have ...

We had both been really really looking forward to getting to New Zealand. Meeting people along the way who had been there really whetted our appetite. New Zealand is a little bigger than the UK, yet only has the same population as Ireland - about 4 and a half million. 20 million very worried sheep though.

We had arranged to stay in what turned out to be a fantastic B&B for our first 3 nights in Auckland. Bart and Therese, a truly fantastic Belgian couple who are living and running a B&B in Auckland were our hosts for days 1 - 3. We couldn''t have had a better introduction to Auckland. ...

Well then, we ended up having to rush to Auckland to get my camera fixed which was a bit irritating because we wanted to stay longer to go zorbing and I wanted to go to the sheep show at the agradome (yes I was really looking forward to it!). Alena and Selina ended up coming with us in our car, it saved them hitchhiking all the way and was ok as we were already headed there. As soon as we got to Auckland it was mayhem, there were so many cars and about four lanes so was really nervewracking given that in the rest of New Zealand there is hardly traffic at all so that came as a bit of a shock. ...

What beautiful country side here on the north Island of New Zealand.

The most noticable here were the little hills that pop out all over, there is not too much flat land. Lots of dairy cows and sheep. It seems like noone needs lawnmowers here. Sheep and cows graze right up to the front door!

The fall colours were very nice and the air was a little nippy.

Alison: So with our first continent under our belt we arrived in New Zealand bracing ourselves for the sudden drop in temperature and looking forward to visiting a country where everyone (in theory) spoke our language.

Auckland was our first stop and we spent the first 5 days acclimatising, shopping (a totally justifiable past time when all your clothes are designed for 30 degrees and humidity not 12-15 degrees!) and sampling Auckland's nightlife. We met up with Fliss, a friend of mine from home, and decided to be touristy and go up the Sky Tower together. This meant that both Gemma ...

So its been a couple days since we updated this. We're learning that getting internet access in New Zealand isn't as easy as just popping into a coffee shop that has Wi-Fi. Also, you can't really make a phone call here either without paying for it, even if it is local. Some motels even tell you that you have to pay to call a 1-800 number. All the businesses, including motels will charge you for any phone call, because they say it costs them money. Next time I meet a Kiwi (New Zealander) in the States I'm going to ask them about that... But now we got a wireless internet access thing for ...

Well i had done Melbourne, so me and my now sorer butt made our way to the airport to catch my flight to Auckland, New Zealand. I was sad to be leaving Australia but excited (obviously) to be seeing the family and seeing a new country...on their expense is always good!

Flew in, and got greeted by the said family (its so nice to have someone waiting for you at arrivals) and then got in Mary's car and headed to her little house. For the next week we chilled out, read magazines, went to the beach, drank lots of hot chocolates and chocolate biscuit smoothies and did some shopping. I was ...

Although a silly aquarium and you've probably seen hundreds before this one is really good. You get to see hand feedings of stingray and sharks and if you want (although i didn't ask) they can suit you up and join the stingray in the tank. Worth a look and a good few hours spent. The penguins are awesome too

Was nice. The rooms were a good size and clean, and it had an amazing entertainment area. The entertainment area has severl (around 8) nice couches, is spread through three good sized rooms, has an arcade, a tv lounge and a little area with games and books. It was better than most hotels, in terms of places to be outside your room.
