Monument Valley was probably one of the most picturesque places we've been to. We had a really good day, walking around one of the big rocks and going on a probably not worthwhile tour around the valley. It is possible to drive around 60% of the area yourselves. The rest is only for Navajo lead tour groups, and to be honest the best bits are all on the self-drive section anyway. Still, if you've got a spare $50...

We were staying just up the road from the valley in Kayenta in a fancy Hampton Inn Motel (which was also the cheapest in town). They did an excellent breakfast for us, ...

Ranger Jim was a colourful character with a Spongebob fetish, who began the lecture reading out the lyrics from the theme song (“who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” etc) and kept referring to the Spongebob TV marathon he was missing. Despite this we learned loads about the Grand Canyon’s history and geology, and even more about Ranger Jim. He was the worst player on ...

Well we have gotten into our routine here at the Black Canyon City KOA, our schedule is set we think for the time we are here. We get 6 days in a row off in a 2 week schedule, this is great as we can take a few extended trips to some places we would like to see.

We took a drive into Scottsdale, to Old Downtown Scottsdale. It looks like a old west town, the shops were very interesting with the native jewelery and art. We took a ride on a trolley through the area, you can get off and on at your convenience. There are some very exclusive shopping areas here. We had lunch in a outdoor ...

We left Santa Fa early Monday morning Oct.29th. A good drive with stops for gas and rests for Toby and us. We arrived in Flagstaff mid afternoon. There is a lot of construction as you get off Hwy 40 and head to the park. Had dinner and a quiet night, tomorrow we will head to the CANYON.

Got a early start to the Grand Canyon, it was a longer trip than I remembered from our trip in 1994. We stopped at a lookout with a altitude of 6000 feet, with a some very impressive views. There were natives selling their jewelery, should have bought a necklace I saw there, when we go back I hope ...

It's not that we didn't care, per se, but we felt like we knew what was in store -- "wow, it's pretty big" snap-snap back in the car. (For Jon, most of this comes from Chevy Chase's Vacation. More on this in a second.)

Anyway, we even debated skipping to the Grand Canyon. But by the time we were in Bryce and on our way to Santa Fe, it would have been hard to avoid it.
What a day! We left the Grand Canyon south rim and drove the Desert View drive again on the way out of town. It was not quite as hazy as yesterday, but certainly still not as clear as we would have liked. On the drive toward Page, AZ, we passed Echo Cliffs and drove through some of the most beautiful scenery. I will have to say that I will never call Oklahoma red again! Lake Powell can be seen from Page and we saw some HUGE cruisers. After parking our trailer, we headed back south and east toward the north rim. It was 101 degrees in Page when we left. On the way, we stopped at the Marble ...

Wow, I am totally mixed up on days. I thought all day today it was only Friday. We spent most of the day at the Grand Canyon. Thank goodness we went down to the canyon last night to watch the sunset. Because of fires farther north and a small fire on the north rim, it was very hazy today and hard to see much. We took the Desert View highway and stopped several times along the way for different views. On the way back, we stopped at the new visitor’s center where there was a lot of information on the formation of the canyon and the thirteen different layers of rock found there. Because of rain ...

The kids wanted to ride the Sky Ride at the Arizona Snowbowl so we sidetracked a bit. It was a nice trip to 11,500 feet near the top of Mt. Humphrey, the highest point in Arizona. Of course, the rain followed but fortunately didn't start until about five minutes after we got off (thank goodness)! As we left, the temperature was 58 degrees and within about 30 minutes, we had jumped 35 degrees!

The two lane scenic drive to the Grand Canyon was under construction and we had to stop twice to wait on a pilot car to escort us through. We met some people from Indiana and took a few neat ...

Arizona does not observe daylight savings time so they are on Pacific Time right now. Because of this, it gets dark at 8:00 pm and the sun is up at 5:00 am. It is hard to go back to sleep if you by chance accidentally wake up at 5:00. We ate “all you can eat” pancakes this morning and pulled out about 10:00. About 50 miles from Holbrook is the Meteor Crater. This was a really neat stop. This 150 ft, multi-ton, extremely dense, iron/nickel meteor struck the earth about 50,000 years ago with a force 1,000 times greater than the atomic bomb that struck Hiroshima. When the meteor struck the Earth, ...

Sorry for the delay in writing. We had to stay at a different RV park than originally anticipated and they did not have WiFi. We had to go find a bookstore and use their service and it was very slow. Today, we drove to the Grand Falls. Now, had it been the monsoon season (it starts in August by the way) we might have seen falls. However, we saw a dry canyon and goats with bells, which Hannah thought were pretty cool. It was quite a drive with about 10 miles being loose cinder road. I would recommend it if you come to Flagstaff during the monsoon season or if you have plenty of time to spare. ...

Can you believe it - it hasn't rained in Arizona for some time but it rained today! We made it to the Petrified Forest without getting wet and tolerated the heat well. It was nearly 100% but 12% humidity. Can you believe 12%?? The Petrified Forest was really cool. It was created during the Triassic period when this part of the world was part of Pangea and located at the equator. These trees were part of an ancient forest and were toppled during a flood. After tumbling and rolling for miles, the branches were broken off. The logs settled to the bottom of the river and over time were ...

We pulled out of Albuquerque about 9:30 after having a nice breakfast at the RV park. It took about an hour to get the the turnoff for the Bandera Ice Cave. The drive to the cave was really cool with a big change of scenery as we got closer to the caves. Pine trees began to appear and the landscape had a black color to it due to volcanic ash.

The hike to the ice cave took about 15 minutes. Along the route, we saw a Douglas Fir that is thought to be over 700 years old and sink holes created when lava tubes collapsed. The ice cave was created when the rain water and snow melt and seep ...

There were groves of date trees surrounding a restaurant built in the 60's where every kind of date product imaginable is sold, including large delicious date milkshakes served in styrofoam cups with ill-fitting lids. Since we've never had a date milkshake before - it's hard ...

We hired a car/jeep thing & hit the open road through the desert, over the Hoover Dam, to the Grand Canyon from Vegas. It wasn't so bad driving in the states on the wrong side of the road and the views were gorgeous.

The Grand Canyon is breathtaking, seriously stunning. It seemed such a contrast from the glitz, glamour & excess of Vegas. We stayed in a cabin type thing right on the South Rim which was lovely. It had a lovely porch with porch swings, views of the Canyon & stuffed animal heads sticking out of every wall! We watched the sun set over the Canyon from the swing & headed to ...

Day one: Today we arrived in Flagstaff, the closest town to the Grand Canyon. It is so much prettier up here than I had expected......Lots of pine trees line the mountain side and this is Ski resort area in the winter months....

We are staying in the The Grand Canyon Hostel......Its an old converted bar/hotel building from the 1800 s.....I bet these walls would have some stories to tell......

It is really cosy and only has a few rooms so its a nice relaxing place....

This morning we found the local visitors center and found out about the area....There is a lot more history ...

A long drive from the Hoover Dam led us to Williams, a charming town (with Wild West accessories such as a "live" cowboy gunfight every night!) which was on Route 66, the classic American roadtrip location. After driving the route 66 loop (the 80mile stretch is the longest continuous section left, with great views), we had a good evening in Rod's Steakhouse (where V attempted and failed to eat a the largest rack of Ribs she had ever seen!) before spending the morning looking round the town.

The South rim of the Grand Canyon is about 90 miles from Williams, and we decided to leave it ...

Leaving the North Rim we faced a 215 mile drive to the other side. (It's only 14 miles as the raven flies.) We backtracked past charred trees of a forest fire and past the Vermilion Cliffs until we reached Cameron on Highway 89. Then we turned west on Highway 64 toward the South Rim of the canyon. Once inside the park, this road is called the Desert View. One of the main sights along this road is the Watchtower, built by Mary Colter for the Fred Harvey company. Mary Colter built many structures inside the park for Fred Harvey and the railroad. All of the buildings are meant to depict specific ...

The drive from Flagstaff to the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon is about 300 miles and takes easily 5 hours. That's if you don't stop to admire the National Monuments along the way. We suggest you do take the time. As Cathy told us in Phoenix, they are worth it!

Our first stop along Highway 89 was the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. This eruption took place about 1062 BC. Lava flows and cinders still look as fresh and rugged as the day they formed. But seeing how the trees and flowers have come back in places is the real joy. There will be a hillside or a plateau of black ash ...

This is a wash that fills only during summer monsson type storms.

Fred's house is located at the foot of the Santa Cantalina Mtns and they are quite spectacular, rising some to 10,000 feet, higher than anything we have in Australia. Tucson itself is at around 3000 feet and is in the Sonoran Desert. These mtns are rugged and home to mountain lions, small wild pigs, deer and bears. One of the most common birds that we have sighted is the 'Western ...
