Finally a break from the strange world of seaview lion park!

We exited the park with the song of the great escape flowing through my head, it was a surreal experience, thats about the best thing i can really say. The lions were cute as were the other animals especially the Meerkats, but for poor old Lyds the snakes and spiders were not.

We should have known when we entered Seaview Lion Park that something was dodgy as Yvette, the Volunteer manager was heading off to church camp for a week, leaving a really nice guy called Bradley who had started the day we arrived all on his own. ...

Not sure if it is Egypt itself or the fact that I am tired of traveling and not feeling 100%. First lesson I learnt, never have any expectations when traveling, you will just be disappointed in the end. Things started off okay. Had a easy time crossing borders. Had breakfast in Jordan, lunch in Israel and supper in Egypt, not bad for one day. When you stand in Aqaba, Jordan you have Saudi Arabia to your left with Israel and Egypt across the Red ...

So this weekend was the 12th century anniversary of the city of
Fez. I had planned on traveling to Fez to see some amazing
culture and celebrations. Then I realized, there would be about
half a million people there. It will be crowded, I'm not even
sure what kind of celebrations there will be...And I've been to Fez
like 10 times already! My decision also might have something to
do with the fact that I was invited to watch the national moroccan
surfing championships in Media, near Kenitra. That's a cultural
experience too! Oh well, I'll go to the next celebration 12
centuries ...

So here it goes!

3/31/08

We got up today and started the drive to Durban. On the way to where we stayed we stopped at the Indian Market. It was a huge building with probably close to a hundred different stands selling all kinds of African souvenirs. We spent a couple of hours browsing the stands and making purchases. After the market we drove out to where we stayed…oh my! It’s called a Backpackers place and was very…sparse. We split up and stayed 4 to one room and 5 to the other…except they ...

We also met the other two Americans who are accompanying us on the safari, John and Nathan, a father and son duo from San Francisco who had just climbed Kilimanjaro. We all hit it off right away, and I think everyone was relieved to have gotten paired with people who, at the very least, were going to be low maintenance and interesting to talk to for ...

As I write this blog, please visualize that I am lying on a bed that sits on the covered patio of our white beach bungalow facing the most incredible blue ocean in the world. The branches of the palm trees around the bungalow rustle lightly in the breeze while clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean gently wash up on the blindingly bright, white sand of the beach as the tide sleepily rolls in. This chalk-white sand can be seen glowing up through the turquoise waters for miles and miles off shore. Local children are ...

The ride was only about two hours, and it was really awesome to watch the world go by. We passed through several areas that were populated, although I don't think you could really call them villages, and it looked like the same drill on a smaller scale.....women carrying stuff on their heads, mud huts, oxen ...

much thought since we booked our tickets, and now we would be in Africa in less than 24 hours. We decided we might take a

Oh well.

Well, first things first, now that I am writing this so late from when we actually left the country, you know we made it out alive (some may have been worried after those bombings in ...

I'm sure I've mentioned before that Africa is a big country but the one time when you really start to realise it is when you get into the desert. Mile upon mile of unrelenting sand and scrub, scorching heat and sunshine.

On the plus side, it tends not to rain much either.

After the joys of Swakopmund we headed for the Namib desert which is on the west coast of Namibia, stayed overnight at a place called Sessume and got up at the crack of dawn (or rather just before) so that we could drive 50 km to the imaginatively named Dune 45 to see the sun rise.

We'd expected glorious ...

The last time we saw the sea was just before Christmas when we left the Indian Ocean behind as we departed Dar es Salam. Since then we've been through Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia and today we reached the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Cross in Namibia. I haven't worked out how far we travelled yet but what a journey! For some reason I was really quite moved at having made it across Africa, coast to coast. Must be the sun.

You can't visit this part of Namibia without visiting the seal colony at Cape Cross, the biggest seal colony of its kind in Africa. As we approached the smell was ...

Tanzania such as the one we did, and hikers who are heading up
Kilimanjaro, the 19,000+ foot peak about 50 miles to the northeast.
Thus, the place is crawling with tourists, and is pretty well set up to
cater to them. Arusha’s other main claim to fame is that it is where

January 18th our flight from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar left at 8:00 am. We took the Air Tanzania shuttle from the hotel. It was free versus $50.00 for a taxi. Our flight was 50 minutes. The view from the air was beautiful, with many reefs dotting the aqua marine waters of the Indian Ocean. Stonetown is a wonderful cultural experience. The religion is mostly Muslim and the people stop to pray many times of the day(and night). At 5:00 every morning prayers can be heard over a loud speaker throughtout the town. The streets of the town are very very narrow. Some are only a few inches wider ...

! Après ...
